Americans will only start caring when they lose some coastal cities. The sad thing is, that global warming is a relatively slow effect, it doesnt give the big bang that a hurricane or earthquake does ... so it slowly creeps in and over time will do much more damage that what most quick natural disasters could do, and the effects will be permanent. The entire time ignorance will be the key to keeping the population in the dark about the threats to their lovely house with a coastal view. But as usual, the loss of life have been given a price, cause afterall, it would be more expensive to do something about it than to sit there and wait for it to happen.

GW is not well liked here. Last poll i read Canada was 24% in favor, 76% against. Those are serious numbers. People here see Republican and Conservative as something of equals (thought, thankfully, Harper isnt quite as far right as GW).

The US has always had an effect on Canada via its political and social actions. The US is like Canada's guinie pig. When something works there, we adopt it, when it fails or lets the US down, we come up with legislation to prevent it from happening here.

With GW, in Canadian eyes, going so far over the top, it reflects against the Conservatives here. So, the worse he is, the worse it seems to be for the Cons here in Canada to catch a break (And most political parties in any democratic country would beg for something to happen to their opponents like what is going on with the Liberals right now ... but it doesnt seem to be able to enable the Cons to get over the top)

Cause Videotron didnt refuse (which isnt the same as giving up info), they did say they were going to comply (again, doesnt mean they actually gave up anything, just that they were willing, unlike the rest of the ISPs) and that last statement is, as i said from the beginning, 'old news'.

Speculation on what Videotron did it for, and who they did it for and why they did it is just that, speculation. The only real thing I know about this situation (with regards to Videotron) is that they agreed to co-operate to what the CRIA requested. Which is the very next step to giving up info, but not actually giving up any. Was any info given out? Unlikely due to the court process that was going on, the CRIA would not have wanted to invite any lawsuits from people who's info was given up counter to the court's decision. But, we may never know either way if any was volunteered.

But, as the point was with my original statement, and i will break it down to avoid any miscommunication (which is something i must have done with my initial statement, otherwise i wouldnt be still trying to convey it). This all happened one year ago. To myself, that makes this 'old news'. Getting irate now about what Videotron did or would have done seems somewhat after-the-fact to me. Though, i admit, if i was one of their customers, i think i would be irate no matter when i learned about this situation.

people should know that ISPs can't and don't just voluntarily give out information without a court order. reports to the contrary are misinformation.

If you speaking from the Canadian perspective, i think your right. If your speaking from the US perspective, then it isnt so correct. Unless i missed something about the US situation, information was given over quite readily, save a few ISP's here and there. One major ISP went to court over it if i remember correctly, but i dont know what the outcome of that effort was.

Sorry for the late-ness of this reply, went through some comp issues, had to do 'brain surgery' on it. BTW, I didnt know what the acronym FUD meant, but i had assumed it was something with a negative connotation.
  10. Re:Not true. on Canadian ISP to Name Music Swappers · · Score: 1

when the CRIA first decided to get information from ISP's, they didnt do it through court initially. They first gave requests to each of the major Canadian ISP's. When every ISP save Videotron refused, then it was brought into court.

I never said that any information was given out, but that Videotron was the only ISP that was complying with what the CRIA has requested. I was making it somewhat dramatic by claiming they "folded under the weight of the CRIA", but the essential fact remains, they were willing to comply with any information request that the CRIA wanted, while every other ISP was not.

If you want to look into some type of conspiracy because of parent ownership, then there might be a link there as to why. I was merely stating that Videotron giving up personal client info voluntarily is old news. And it is still old news as it took place prior to last years initial lawsuit.

And i think this is interesting news as far as what happened yesteday. Sure, it isnt some landmark decision, or some court event drama, but it still a step in the process to see what the Canadian courts think about the CRIA's ISP request. I follow things like this closely as i dont want to have anything occur under my tiny news radar. But i guess news worthyness is in the eye of the reader or writer at times.

Wow, where do i begin with this one ...

Firstly, your post shows me yet another reason why i can never read anything with faith in your country if it has a political ring to it. Whether it be for one of your two political canidates. Anything you spout out of your pie hole, is almost ALWAYS skewed into whatever they want to make it look like. Its really disheartening to think about all the political spins that come out of the US, and how every article i read, or interview i hear, or program i watch, i have to take with massive grains of salt because i can never beleive any statistic or 'fact' you speak about. But then again, the problem with that is most politicians or political based organizations have nothing to worry about from the US media because research is a concept not used to correct or backup statements such as those. Your politicians can say what they want, however they want, and rarely are their words asked to be verified. [John Stewart is right].

Canada a haven for terrorists? Man, give your head a shake. I can honestly say I would rather try to live in harmony with the rest of the planet, than to ostrasize them and live in constant fear of attacks. And guess what? I dont fear ANY attack from ANY country. Not because I live in Canada [which is something I am proud to say to anyone, anywhere], but because i dont live in a society that is managed, maintained, and enforced with fear around every corner.

Now, when you speak about justice, i find that somewhat ironic. You want justice, how about to try to locate and eliminate Bin Ladin instead of pursuing your goal of total destruction of a country that had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks. You call us cowardly? What about in WWII when the only reason you came into the war was because of Pearl Harbor? How the planet had begged you for help, and you choose not to. As with many of your conservative followers have people beleiving, your more interested in getting everyone to beleive in what your preaching rather than actually accomplishing justice. If this is a backwards country, then im all good with that. Call it what you want, Canada constantly in in the top 10 lists for all sorts of reasons. Economic climate, care for its citizens, civil rights [something those of you in the US seem to have forgotten about. In order to preserve freedom, you seem to think elminating civil rights and liberties is the method to go with. Micheal Foucault would be yelling for you to stop before its too late, if he was still alive] This country tries to balance its relationship with its bully to the south and the rest of the world. It isnt easy to do, and a lot of the reasons we arent hated, dispite our similarities, is because we arent regarded as 'bulls in china shops'.

I can guarantee, if your ok with civil rights abuses, then you are heading towards a world, that once it starts in motion, you will NEVER stop it or undo it. If you start saying its ok to curb liberties here and there, then you will, in time, curb whatever liberty you see fit to attain your goal. The ends do not justify the means, rarely ever.

Someone has to protect America from the terrorists, drug dealers, and criminals that are tolerated and encouraged in Canadian society

This statement is so asinine it is hardly even worth bothering. We are talking about civil liberty abuses, and your talking about something you saw in CNN. If you lived here, you will find we are very intolerate of criminals and the like. We just dont justify burning a building full of people just to kill one 'suspected' terrorist.

I have one last thing to say, what are you doing about your coastal boarders? You say that Canada is a haven for people to flock to the US, well, what about your East and West coast? You protecting those? Your not, and you cant. If a terrorist truly wants to come into the US, it is a simple matter of just walking into your country in the dead of night from a ship parked off the shore. You want to protect yo

In the case of US firms or US citizens, Canadians shouldnt have a right to tell the US how to dictact its policy, but when it comes to Canadian citizens, the US should keep its nose out of where its not wanted. Another thing that irks me, is that this sort of information sharing between countries has been going on for a long long time. Most countries do not have a 'patriot act' to allow blantant civil rights abuses [ie: No privacy for John and Jane Doe .. irregarless if they bear reason for investigation or not.] Counrties frequently monitor other countries information transactions, and then sell them back to the country of origin. Its a way for them to circumnavigate around privacy laws and legislation. If you are outraged about this, then do something about it. But remember, this is WAY deeper than what you think, and I can bet that if you have ever had a phone conversation where your speaking about a game that includes the words bomb, kill, or president, your name has come up in a database and your calls monitored ... just long enough to verify if your a legitimate threat, or just some gamer with an over-active imagination.

This pre-dates 9/11 imo, it only got MASSIVELY worse after 9/11. /rant on Why is it, when people do wrong in politics, its never truly scrutinized in a critical fashion as it should be. Our political leaders should not be held to the mere levels of the common [sheep] citizen, but should exemplify a higher standard. Yes, they are human, but they are supposedly human representatitives. They are supposed to support and express an ideal. Instead, at one point you had the PRESIDENT receiving sexual favors with his intern, you have another president who went to WAR, killing 100's of his own troops, and 1000's of the citizens of the invaded country, based on false intelligence [that apparently, on paper w/o fact checking is good enough to go to war], and the entire time spinning everything for political gain. People's lives should NEVER be a tool for political gain!. And these presidents should be exemplifing the ideal representative. I dont know about you, but a quality I want in a leader of my country is moral standards. If he isnt able to be that way, then he has NO REASON to be a rep for me or my country. The leader of a country has to LEAD ... not just "be one of the boys". Thats BS that we, the people, have tolerated for far too long imo. This is but just a tad taste of the amount of crap that is going on out there, that the media covers, but never criticizes, and that is what Stewart was hoping the Crossfire people could answer for him. Why? Why repeat the same political machine and rhetoric that the political parties engage in? Why not actually tell these people that they are wrong? Its all part of a Marxist thought i bet. If you do something to piss the 'boss' off, he wont invite you to any more press conferences. The Party's have the media right where they want the media, as lapdogs and agenda toters.
