  1. Re:The Limit of Lawsuits on AMD Alleges Intel Compilers Create Slower AMD Code · · Score: 1

Except that one of the examples sited was that AMD processors run a gauranteed compatible chunk of code that uses no MMX instructyions. The compiler simply doesn't recognise it and defaults to code that will run on anything, which means it can't use MMX registers, etc.

    As for

"At the very least Intel compiler users who run on AMD should feel slighted if Intel did not bother to optimize code everywhere it could do so safely simply to protect its CPU business."

I guess I would say to those people use another compiler. Or if you really want to use the Intel compiler use the Intel chips. I am glad that Intel did not waste time supporting other peoples chipsand instead made theirs as fast as possible.

Actually this fine article says "it executes a different code path that will degrade the program's performance or cause it to crash." but gives no example. Just like SCO claims IBM infringed on it. However I doubt it causes it to crash on purpose or we would hear lots of people complaining about programs not working on thier AMD's. Compilers are tricky.

  3. Re:The Limit of Lawsuits on AMD Alleges Intel Compilers Create Slower AMD Code · · Score: 1

Actually it says right on the compiler that it only optimises for Intel CPU's.

And lets set the point straight there is a difference between using a generic method of doing something that works on every cpu, and detectnig an "AuthenticAMD" cpuid and filling your code with things that wasted time. If they really wanted to be evil they could have porposly put out code filled with delay loops and other annoying stuff.

Instead Intel just put out generic code.

  4. Re:Send that to AMD's legal team! on AMD Alleges Intel Compilers Create Slower AMD Code · · Score: 1

That is the entire point. They don't want to have to check does this chip have mmx, well what about double word alignment, etc etc. So if you are running on one of the select cpu's its optimized for its going to put out code that can run on ANYTHING, from a brand new AMD to an 8086.

This is exactly what I would hope it would do. I don't want things the not work just because AMD wants it to be spiffy. If you aren't targeting intel processors don't use Intel's compiler.

This is different then MS because Intel does not have a monopoly on compilers. And it is not using that monopoly to force other people to use Intel chips.

If AMD has a problem with this maybe they should make there own compiler.

Actually all democracy does is change what makes a person strong and a person weak. Now instead of military might it is campaign dollars and persuasive personalities.

As a note my candidate lost the last election. Does that mean I want democracy thrown out? No. Though I do believe in a stronger force than any temporary president. I believe in the constitution and the rights it grants me. Would I give my life to protect the people in power, no. I would if I believed it was needed to protect the rights of our people.

Of course it doesn't help that we are being conditioned to see the world as red and blue. That if you are not with me you are the enemy and we share NO common ground. Our system of government only works well if both sides can work together. What angers me right now is the way the people in power are willing to steam roller over those who they don't like. In the long term this is incredibly stupid, but for the short term the rewards are great.
