  1. Re:Wire for DC! on Electronic Gadget Ideas for a New House? · · Score: 3, Insightful

Not a good idea- the reason high voltages are used is power=voltage*current, so for a given device, a higher voltage will mean a lower current; since resistive losses are poroportional to the square of the current, you will need MUCH thicker wires for DC (on the order of 1/2"). For example, common household 120V circuits are reated at 15A; if your computer uses 15A@12V from its power supply, this means only 1.5A@120V is needed, letting you use 8-9 computers (theoretically) on the same circuit, whereas if you ran DC, you would need a separate circuit for each computer or very thick wiring.

At my university at least, there are two types of backbone links: a commercial, metered fiber connection(McLeod I think), and the Internet2/research backbones, which are dedicated links between universities. The reason there is filesharing on Internet2 is because universities generally try to route internet1 traffic destined of other universities over the Internet2 backbones- why use a more expensive commercial connection to go out to Level3 or whatever and then to the destination when you have a dedicated fast pipe? Actual "Internet2" access is still restricted to researchers (so Joe DormLover is not "logging into" internet2, his packets are going through a tunnel, invisible to him).

Overall power used by a load is expressed as S=P+jQ, where P is the "real" power and Q is the reactive power (capacitive/inductive from motors, fluorescent lamp ballasts, etc).

While the "units" of S, P, and Q are power=voltage*current, S is generally expressed in VA, P in W, and Q in VAR(volt-ampere reactive) to differentiate the variables. Because the magnitude of S=sqrt(P^2+Q^2), S will always be greater than or equal to P (in this case, 14.8kVA=sqrt((14.5kW)^2+(+-2.965kVAR)^2)
