    MS OS/2 1.0 was not EOL.

    It was abandoned by MS at 1.2 so that 3COM's 3+Open and IBM's PC Server OS's that built on top of it would have to react and lose market share.

    MS was in an agreement with IBM and 3COM that allowed them to take advantage of the developments of the other two while leaving them in the cold. IBM tried to pick up development of OS/2 (including WARP), but that is a different story.

    NT, Win2K, and XP all use the "net xxx" commands that were the heart of 3COM's OS even before the "alliance" with Microsoft. I think this is why Bob Metcalfe seems to hate Gates with such a passion.

    I know of a few insurance companies that still rely primarily on a DOS based application that they continue to run under Win98 or Win95.

    One still uses DOS 6.22 on 486 based PC's for a few of their users.

    I have run the app in DOSEMU on Linux, but have problems with network support.

    I wish they would agree to migrate to a newer app.

    My vote is with the X-700 as well!

    Between my wife and myself we have many of the SLR cameras recommended by other /.'rs here, including a Pentax K-1000, a Nikon N60, and Minolta XG-A, XG-M, and X-700.

    The recently acquired 300D (Digital Rebel) is the only one I like better than the X-700, and that is probably because it is new. The build quality of the X-700 is far superior. It is also in the $200 price range where the 300D is not. The Pentax K-1000 is a close second.

    I have always liked Minolta's lenses, too.

    This fills a need for many consumer solutions that will have their cpu emebedded, similar to what VIA does with EDEN or C3. Most users have no idea of the clock speed of the cpu in their satellite tuner or DVR. I assure you many engineers that pick CPU's for systems will be glad to have this as a choice...

    The A1000 predates the A500. You must be thinking of the A1200 with AGA graphics.

    Marble Madness still gets some play time! ;) I used to send stuff to and use stuff fro FredFish before I even heard of GPL and FSF.

    While NAT and CIDR made a big difference on the ability to make IPv4 address space last longer, the intrinsic use of IPSec and auto-renumbering features of IPv6 may be enough to get some moving toward it. And they are only two of the benefits.

    The argument to stay on IPv4 sounds a lot like the argument to stay with SNA... We've got it, we know it, we don't know what else we need from it...

    I'm ready for IPv6 when my first customer wants it. Not a day sooner, not a day later.

    P.S. - LU 6.2 to IPv4 with 3172 was pre OSA. Now I can put IPv4 or IPv6 on the host.

    While money is a great resource, if I had just meant money, I'd I've put "money" instead of "resources".

    The wealth of brainpower and labor that is able and willing to contribute to a robotics project near Silicon Valley is greater than it is in my semi-podunk area (but I like it ok here anyway).

    If I were a little closer to RTP, maybe I could've found qualified interested people. As I tried to recruit volunteer local mechanics and engineers, I got blank looks or laughs. Of course, I get blank looks and laughs for less than that. ;)

    Hey, but I know QNX and several other RTOS - plus I can solder, own a spectrum analyzer and a multi-meter... It's 3000+ mile to Silicon Valley though, so maybe it won't work...

    I've spent a lot of time on it so far and am not sure that DARPA's autonomous vehicle challenge is the best place for a roboticist to get a financial return.

    For all that DARPA did for the ARPANET/Internet, Cisco made most of the money. I'm positioning myself suitably. My advice to others put off by DARPA rejections is to not be.

    The challenge got many people's creative juices flowing. DARPA is good at pushing the cutting edge.

    Gates just continues to prove how little he understands what he says.

    All of my customers have firewalls. All of my customers systems log to external syslogd. All of my customers get regular patching.

    Some of my customers carry MS OS craptops on and off of their networks and bring trojans, viruses, and worms that I must deal with.

    Not a problem on ANY of the Macs, Linux, or SunOS/Solaris systems I support.

    But hey, its billable, so I guess I should feel some gratitude towards Gates.

    I don't.

    Ah ha! That makes more sense...

    so does hyper-scsi need the different linux boxes to be on a common ethernet segment (shared or switched) in order to work, or can it traverse a layer 3 device (can it address different network segmenets without bridging)? I guess no for the raw ethernet frames... not sure though. Guess I'm interested enough to go check it out more.

    Uhm, in ordinary or not ordinary terms, how are IDE, USB, and Fiber Channel SCSI based? No SCSI ID, LUN or sub-units, no arbitration for control like SCSI...

    Intel is strong on the prices this time. That was their strength when it was 8088, 8086, 8085 Intel vs. Motorola 6800. btw - back then AMD made chips for Intel...

    It will be interesting to see how the different CPU's make use of their wider data paths. My guess is that the VLIW (read Transmeta) approach will be very efficient. That alone is may not be enough. Never underestimate price point and marketing to determine a winner.

    Why don't ZILOG come out with a 64 bit? The Z640? :)

    HP rules! MPE was/is a good OS. HP knows a good thing, and Linux is a just that.

    It was a couple of years ago that HP added support for linux libraries to HP-UX. Now they are shipping Mandrake CD's.

    I hope they sell loads of those systems.

    Oh, can I get linux for my HP75C? (no, this is not a calculator)...
