Alternatively it could be argued that this is the reason that we have a parliament - to mitigate against the undesirable effects of the uneducated masses from implementing poor decisions that seem right in their limited view. The referendum is not constitutionally binding, and until we enact a form of democracy where it is, we're bound by the will of the (presumably) meritocratic representatives that we have chosen to elect in the one case where our direct vote does count. In America one votes to elect a representative to an electoral college. I do believe that there have been cases where the college decision did not represent the majority of the plebiscite but which were considered democratic because of the constitutionality of the college. As a member of the popular voice one may regret the outcome, but one would have to admit that it was within the scope allowed by the legal and documented process.

  3. Re:Dear Apple.... on Phil Schiller Says the MacBook Pro Doesn't Need an SD Card Slot (theverge.com) · · Score: 1

I'm with you on this (as a D800 owner). I possibly wouldn't have actually used the SDXC slot as I have an even faster USB 3 card reader and faster CF cards, but it's convenient to do so without involving a hub as I can plug a pair of portable USB 3.0 drives into the two (sigh) USB ports on the last generation MacBook Pro and back up my photos from the SD card to both drives using Photo Mechanic. Losing the SDXC slot is in theory okay as there are now four ports available for media, so I still shouldn't need to carry a hub around with me. I would now need to connect two drives and a card reader. The problem is that since we're now getting those ports as USB-C format ports, existing drives will need new cabling or I'll be carrying idiotic numbers of adapter cables in addition to the existing cables. Sure, I don't need to buy new cables with every drive that I buy, but I do need at least a pair of each of USB-C to USB-microB (hard drives), USB-C to USB-miniB (card readers, cameras) cables and I need to keep the older cables around in case I need to connect things up to the previous generation hardware or non-Apple systems. Overall I'm okay with it - four generic device connections is more useful overall than a handful of specific connections (power, display, media card) and two generic. It's just going to require some initial discomfort and additional cost as well as some more thought when picking what cables are needed on trips.

Thanks to the power of The Internet (I'm old-fashioned so I capitalised it) I was able to glean that there is a rotary dial telephone on every table, handy for making voice calls but not so useful for Facebook, Pokemon or Reddit. You can even use these provided telephones to call other tables, although the bar etiquette demands that if you do, you buy a drink for the people at the table that you call. In any case, the twenty-first century schizoid terrorists won't be able to coordinate their attacks without WhatsApp so they'll be in the bar down the road, and probably far enough down the road to not be in the disproportionately geriatric single-home areas of Central Hove. You're welcome.

Only the larger artists will ever be able to offset the fees and the record companies will continue to pocket the proceeds generated by 'minor artists' (which actually includes all the major artists of the past who are no longer selling in sufficient weekly volume). Jay-Z and Madonna will get richer of course, but Roxy Music (for example) won't (unless Jay-Z samples them).

The Saudis have been diplomatically coaxed not to punish Iran in this way (maintaining production levels higher than the market needs) in recent years because the US needs expensive oil to generate investment in local energy businesses. However, the US imperative for local energy jobs has been offset by the need to punish Russia and so they have lessened the overture for restraint to Saudi Arabia for the time being.

With H1-B visas you do not keep the tax revenues in the US, you keep the tax dodgers in the US. Companies such as Microsoft and HP are among the worst offenders, shipping most of their pre-tax profits out of the country to avoid US corporate taxes. They fund their US operations from loans from their offshore entities. They then make use of the services that they have supposedly paid for in their taxes which incurs a cost on the actual tax payers. If they are then planning to bring in foreign workers to more cheaply maintain the onshore jobs, we might as well just outlaw the companies and banish them.
