  1. Speaking of phones ... on Why High-Fidelity Streaming is the Audio Revolution Your Ears Have Been Waiting For (forbes.com) · · Score: 4, Interesting

Has anyone compared wired to wireless quality? Are there any blind A/B tests comparing the built-in DAC of the iPhone using wired headphones vs wireless? And also the built-in DAC with an external DAC?

    i.e.
I'm wondering how much better quality a dedicated DAC and/or DAC+AMP is such as the Schiit Modi 3 (DAC) + Schiit Magni 3 (AMP) ?

Back on Topic: There is a reason us audiophiles ripped everything to FLAC in the first place. So we would never have to re-encode it. The problem is Apple pushed their own proprietary lossless format, ALAC instead of embracing open standards such as FLAC.

Good to see streaming services finally embracing FLAC.

Also, could one of the editors at least PLEASE fix (*) this clickbait: The higher you go with audio file resolution, the better it gets.

It should read: The higher you go with audio file resolution, the better it gets, with decreasing returns.

    i.e.
I doubt most people could tell the difference between variable 320 kbps (kilobits/s) and CD quality even with quality headphones for most music -- unless it is Classical or Jazz.

(*) Yeah, yeah, I know the editors have been a joke around here for ~20 years.

    > What causes religion? Ego.

    That's an incomplete answer.

While it is true that sometimes, sadly usually more often then not, men are motivated by greed, power, and ego to start a religion, however, you are assuming that is the ONLY reason. It is not.

You are forgetting that some people WANT to help others. My local churches donate their time and money to help the less fortunate. Do you? They are doing it because they understand the Golden Rule: Treat others how you want to be treated and indirectly the Law of Karma: You receive what you give. They consider it our moral duty to help others, ego notwithstanding.

Likewise when a person has a mystical insight they try to communicate what Spiritual Principles they learned with others on how to live a better life -- this True Ego is OK in spite of you trying to trivializing it.

This principles, or Spirit of the Law, get codified into a Letter of the Law. Unfortunately, over time, people start to worship these Letters of the Law and lose their sense of compassion and humanity due to False Ego.

Case in point: Yeshua pointed out the stupidity and hypocrisy of Judaic man-made laws when he asked the Pharisees: "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?" Since they refused to answer him he pointed out "If one of you has a child or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?" Somehow this wasn't considered work -- but yet magically healing / helping your fellow man on the Sabbath had a bullshit excuse of "work"?! The point was: What is more importantly? Mindless following man-made rules and ignoring our brothers when they need help? Or having compassion for our fellow man (and lesser brothers the animals) REGARDLESS of what day of the week it is??? There was no law against doing good in spite of what the ignorant Pharisees preached.

And while religions tend to have monochromatic blindness (only MY color is the right one), and egomaniac pissing contests (my god is bigger then your god) the CORE of what they ALL teach is compassion -- along with a process in which our False Egos is transformed into our True Egos.

You are throwing the baby out with the bathwater focusing on corrupt implementations of principles. Why did you focus on Religion and ignore Spirituality? Here is a refresher:

    * Religion: One man telling another what they SHOULD do to understand The Source,
    * Spirituality: One man telling another what they COULD do to understand The Source.

    >> What causes us to strive to break world records? Ego

There is nothing wrong a sense of pride and accomplishment when it is in balance with the rest of your life.

You are under the delusion that ALL ego is bad. It isn't. Likewise you are confused between True Ego and False Ego.

    > The list goes on without any discernible limit. Making your response "Ego" completely meaningless trite.

Is that why did YOU made a trite list?

    >> What made you say it?
    > Ego.

Just because you don't like one of the main factors doesn't make it any less true.

Let's conveniently ignore the quote I included:

"Science progresses one funeral at a time." -- Max Planck

In this particular case I was summarizing:

    * A scientists with an ego is shocked by what he discovers,
    * A scientist who is humble isn't shocked, rather he is intrigued.

Lastly, I'm responding, not because of my ego, but because your title was a query To unknown soldier; but you'll probably blame that on Ego as well. LOL.

    Go in peace.

  7. > but now it makes me wonder what happened to humanity.

That's easy: /Oblg.Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory

    > someone disagrees with you, it's because they are obviously stupid and desire your ridicule and vitriol

Yeah, that's the typical Ad hominem fallacy. Shoot the messenger and ignore the message. Mainstream media is partially to blame for this with trivializing complex issues, sensationalism, and sound bites.

    > There no longer seems to be intelligent debate or even discussions on the likes of FB or Twitter in the same way you had it in the old days of Usenet and other public internet forums.

That's cult thinking. Us vs Them. Aren't interested in finding a common middle ground. The Fallacy of Duality happens in politics, religion, etc. "I'm right, therefore your wrong." instead of a more enlightened perspective: "Maybe I'm *part* right, Maybe you're *part* right" -- but that takes humility to admit one doesn't have all the answers, and that everyone's POV is only a partial perspective.

It also doesn't help that critical thinking isn't taught in school.

Society has devolved into a majority/popularity contest If you don't kowtow the popular opinion you are wrong, "just because."

Every social group has its biases. e.g. /. in the early 2000's used to be heavy Pro-Linux Anti-MS. In 2019 we see way more MS fanboi's making excuses for MS's spyware and lack of respect for its customers.

We see the same bullshit with "hate speech." People are no longer interested in learning. They would rather censor a different opinion. Because if we are forced to have a healthy dialog about opposing opinions we might learn a) our POV in incomplete, or b) worse, we were wrong.

False Ego is a helluva thing to overcome.

Ad hominem fallacies aside (*) that doesn't change the fact that some programming languages are total shit.

What is THE purpose of a programming language? To communicate with a machine. You can communicate in an obtuse way, verbose way, in a precise way, in an ambiguous way, etc. There is a range of QUALITY. There is poor communication and there is good communication.

The reality is that ALL programming languages suck -- some just more then others. One of the properties of a good programming language is that it is consistent. i.e. See PHP is a fractal of bad design

    > Sometimes I think you just hate any language that's actually useful ...

IF I was idealist I wouldn't use any programming language -- but that is not realistic. I'm a pragmatist -- things need to get implemented in the Real World TM. However, that doesn't mean I'm going to just blindly accept and ignore the problems of a language.

    > ... extremely useful JavaScript ..

    Let's talk about Javaschit.

Is it useful? Yes! It has become the new BASIC of the millennium. It is ubiquitous.

I'm NOT against useful languages -- I'm against the BAD DESIGN and IMPLEMENTATION of them.

Do you know how many man years are wasted tracking down bugs simply due to misspelling??? All because the language designer was too fucking lazy to make the KLUDGE "use strict"; the DEFAULT. It's as if NOTHING was learnt from the experience of BASIC. Gee, if only the computer could tell us about misspelled variable names, oh wait, they can! Good engineering is about FAIL EARLY. Javascript was never designed with that mindset -- it was literally hacked together in 10 days. And 20+ years later we are STILL paying the price.

On the other end of the spectrum we have over-engineered shit like Boost where a simple to Read and Write ~25 lines implementation of CRC32 turns into 1,100+ lines of Crap++. WHEN was the last time you _actually_ needed to modify a CRC implementation??? If you need a stronger hash than CRC32 then, chances are, you are probably using a DIFFERENT hash such as FNV, SHA1, etc. due to a) performance, or b) more cryptographically secure (i.e. less collisions.) reasons. The Boost guys have become so obsessed over one little tree that they COMPLETELY missed the entire fucking forest.

Let's talk about C. It was a stupid decision to default every function as returning int. Why wasn't the return type mandatory? Having to run a "lint" program is a SYMPTOM. So why wasn't the CAUSES addressed?

Let's talk about C++. We are STILL waiting for modules -- something that has been standard in Pascal for 35+ years! Why aren't error messages _standardized_ ?? One of the few things MS Visual C++ does right -- is to provide an unique error code. This makes it easier to search for solutions. Go figure!

I am extremely vocal about shitty engineering practices because I'm tired of having to deal with other people's retarded designs and waste MY timing tracking down WTF is wrong with their broken, inconsistent, implementations.

If nothing is ever said about WHY said designs are crap then nothing will ever change.

I am only one voice out of many saying WHY PHP sucks (When even diehard PHP users say PHP needs to die you know there is a problem.)

People who use PHP are either ignorant, stupid, lazy or some combination of them. But that should come as no surprise -- it was designed for non-programmers. Gee and is there ANY wonder it has problems when any decent prog
