Hmm... If you take the letters of each, add up the ASCII values, and subtract, you get 34. 34 is ", which is the only character that could represent the twin towers. Of course we all know what the illuminati had to do with that. Clearly, the illuminati are behind this. And Diebold. Or something.

    So now we know. ;-)

Now take the difference between the cost of the current structure, and the cost of that theoretical structure. Pick an x% interest rate for the number of years since the structure was built. Estimate the current damage, being sure to factor in depreciation values for the current crappy shuttle program. Speakeasy isn't the cheapest option out there, but they will give you at least 2 static IP addresses with most packages, and I think some come with 5 (I also think you can pay for more if needed). That's fine and dandy, but drop the "human lives" part of that. That's not for you to decide; that's for the people who are willing to take the risk to decide. Sky diving, scuba diving, mountain climbing, hiking, camping, driving anywhere - they are all a risk to human lives. Every single one of them, and in some cases, not just their own. It's not your place, or my place, to decide that these people should or should not be risking their life pursuing adventure. You can make that choice for only yourself and those you are legal guardian of, and since your tax dollars are represented in the "billions of dollars", you get a say in that too. But throwing around "human lives" is a weak attempt along the lines of the tired "think of the children" meme.

From most of what I've read/heard, terrorists don't hate us because we are "free" or we have a "free government" (although that is what the Adiministration would like you to believe, as that way they can argue "If you do not support the War On Terror, then you must not support Freedom!") -- most terrorists hate the policies of the US. This short essay gives one perspective, and actually provides references instead of the Administration repeating ad nauseum "They Hate Freedom" -- when there is little evidence that is the primary 'cause' of 9/11.

That, however, is exactly the point of these kinds of challenges. If you manage to get a bunch of people (students, most likely) competing, then simply because you have a *bunch* of people trying to solve the same problem, I think you are much more likely to stumble across the "new approach" you mention -- or, if not it, at least the beginnings of it, that can then be taken by that handfull of researchers with millions at their disposal and improved upon.
