I worked fast food in high school, and apparently there was a rule in our restaurant against having your cell phone out during a shift. No one knew this because it was never enforced and people were on their phones constantly (not talking, just texting and what not during down times). I pulled out my phone to read a text from my mom (actually, her phone had gotten a virus or something, and that text was a picture of a gummy bear with a penis) and my manager asks, "Oh can I see that?" and just takes my phone and puts it in the office. I thought he was joking at first because it seemed so ridiculous. Our "team leader" tried to convince him to give it back but he wouldn't do it, finally I just told him he could either give me my phone or I could quit and he'd have to, he chose the latter option. It felt fantastic, to be honest, and I heard later that the manager felt like an idiot for being responsible for me quitting.
P.S. There are a few comments itt suggesting that doing this could put a "black mark" on your resume forever. Be aware of your company's reference policy. Both there and my current employer, which are vastly different places, prevent managers from providing any official reference other than confirmation of start and end sates of employment.
You are on the wrong site if you wanted to avoid MS-bashing, my friend. I agree, though. I don't think there is anything Microsoft could ever do to get me to buy a Windows Phone, but I desperately hope they find a way to make the platform work eventually, because the Google/Apple duopoly isn't doing it for me.
Linux has the worst UI regardless of which desktop environment you use.
I really wish Linux evangelists would stop fighting this obviously true fact and start working harder to develop a desktop environment that actually competes with Windows and Mac.
It's fair these companies see a new Surface AIO and an Xbox running Windows 10 applications as an attack, but it's equally fair for Microsoft to see this move as a vertical integration strategy that was blocked in the 90s but is commonplace in this decade.
Well yeah, it was blocked in the 90s because they would have vertically integrated the entire market. It's allowed today because there is actual competition.
I disagree - don't make consoles better, make them worse. Stop trying to achieve parity with PCs. It's never going to happen. Instead, accept that the inherent design limitations of consoles requires that they be underpowered vs PCs.
Yes, and those signs are obviously posted. Were that the case here, it would surely have been mentioned. In this situation there is absolutely no legal justification for preventing anyone using these roads as a detour, assuming they are obeying all traffic laws as they drive through.
The difference is that 18-wheelers tend to be explicitly banned from such streets. Regular car traffic is not. You people boggle the mind. There is no legal justification whatsoever for suggesting that residential streets cannot be driven on - period.
"But you wouldn't accept that I can dig up a road and melt down the bitumen for resale."
Get out with such childish and obvious strawman arguments. He only suggested that he has the right to drive on public roads, which he unquestionably does. If you cannot provide a rebuttal to that argument, and that argument alone, your post is utterly meaningless. Seriously, this is a textbook example of a strawman.
"but if you go to City Hall and check the documents, you'll be able to see what the road's intended usage was, and you'll see that "rat run" is not part of the planned spec."
No you won't. "Rat run" is a colloquial concept, it's not a real thing. City hall does not have regulate usage of public roads in that matter. Your entire post is literal nonsense. Meaningless drivel. I cannot stand you.
No, I talk to my cat all day and I hate using voice controls for anything EXCEPT the Apple TV, which is only passably decent because they programmed it specifically for TV-related commands. Siri, Cortana, "OK Google," I just can't use them. It's still faster to use my thumbs.
...the next generations are going to be reading textbooks 50 or 100 years from now, learning about the era in which we genuinely thought jobs were going to disappear forever and not be replaced, and they're going to laugh at our naivety.
I already explained that: they just want what Apple has, where their userbase isn't fractured, and when they push security patches or feature updates they push them to everyone. Windows 10 is the last "version" of Windows. There won't be a Windows 11, it will just be upgraded over time, same as Apple does with OS X, heck, the same as Google does with Chrome. They want everyone off old versions so they can move forward with this plan. Why does it need to be more complicated than that? You ask, "Why not wait for the gradual switch?" What? People are still on XP! If they wanted for everyone to gradually leave old versions it would NEVER HAPPEN. You people need to stop viewing Microsoft as a pantomime villain and understand that they are a logical corporation that makes decisions for logical reasons, even if you and I aren't immediately privy to those reasons. I would further argue that, since Windows 10 desktop apps are more or less the same as mobile apps, having their entire customer base on 10 would allow them to pressure developers to create native Windows 10 apps for their phones, which would allow them to actually compete with Android and iOS. See how easy to is to make sense of this situation when you don't act like they're literally a company of Hitlers?
Yeah, no, that's not happening. Why does everything Microsoft-related have to resort to childish conspiracy theories? They want everyone on 10 so they don't have to support old versions, true. But they just want what Apple has, where their userbase isn't fractured, and when they push security patches or feature updates they push them to everyone. There's not much more to it than that. "Their only play is to fully exploit their monopolist power and embrace extortionist capitalism." Honestly, grow up. You're wasting everyone's time.
No one made that claim. It's obvious that Microsoft fucked up Vista's launch; no one should deny that. What I would deny, however, is that Vista was an inherently bad OS. UAC was annoying, sure. Microsoft's "Vista Capable" branding was misleading at best, sure. Microsoft didn't work closely enough with hardware vendors to develop compatible firmware. But if you got lucky, like I did, and had no hardware compatibility issues, it was nothing but a massive upgrade over XP. I upgraded shortly after launch because, honestly, it was 3am and I had drank way too much caffeine to go to sleep, so why not upgrade my OS? Literally zero problems. For months the negative publicity prevented most people I knew from upgrading - some skipped straight to 7 - and it was agony using other people's XP PCs. It felt SO OLD. Hell, that's how I feel seeing people still on 7 today. It feels absolutely ancient compared to 8 and 10.
The answer for most people MUST be yes. You cannot tell your friends and family to stick with XP or 7 or 8, OSes that Microsoft wants to stop supporting as soon as possible. You cannot tell them to forego a free upgrade when, in all likelihood, they will simply have to pay for it later. You cannot seriously suggest any Linux distro as a real alternative. And you cannot continue spreading FUD regarding data collection and "spyware" when, in reality, Windows 10 does nothing more than that Google, Facebook, really any popular software/service does these days. It's pretty reckless to suggest otherwise.
Slashdot's moderation is hilariously and unsurprisingly broken. Any defense of Microsoft gets flagged as trolling or flamebait, even when it's just a list of true facts.
Still absolutely fascinated to see where they take their smartphone business. I don't think they see themselves as a company that can stay relevant in the consumer space without a competitive mobile platform, particularly when that's arguably the most important piece of any connected ecosystem. The fact that these are mostly former Nokia jobs lends credence to the idea of an in-house "Surface Phone" being their next move.
"Troll?" Is that a joke? If anyone is a troll it's the guy who suggested IP OVER FIREWIRE, ffs, is a relevant feature large numbers of people need or want.
Did you complain about the so-called telemetry in Vista, 7, or 8? Do you complain about it Android? Or are you just focusing on it because Microsoft was the ONLY corporation that reworded their legal liability notices so they were written in plain English? I'm not defending them, I'm not saying it's an acceptable thing, but the fact of that matter is that this level of data reporting has been included in the three prior versions of Windows, AND is done in many other products in on the market (some to far greater extents). The only reason people have this incorrect belief that Windows 10 is particularly bad (hint: it's not) is because Microsoft was up front about it. Well, that, and the fact that the outrage allowed a lot of "news" outlets to get away with blatantly lying about the extent to which Microsoft is capturing your data.
This is why I love Slashdot. People (like you) are obsessed with comically niche features like IP over Firewire, which is utterly irrelevant, and yet you're too blind to reality to realize it. The last time I saw a thread complaining about Windows there was a similar post saying Windows absolutely MUST include built-in ssh. It's like you people are being willfully ignorant of how the end-user market actually works.

It's gotten to the point where the anti-Microsoft FUD is damn near worse than Microsoft's anti-Linux FUD ever was.
I think you misunderstood the concept the article is describing.
I disagree - don't make consoles better, make them worse. Stop trying to achieve parity with PCs. It's never going to happen. Instead, accept that the inherent design limitations of consoles requires that they be underpowered vs PCs.

There are only one or two of those that aren't quite obviously critical to the basic functionality of the app.
I already explained that: they just want what Apple has, where their userbase isn't fractured, and when they push security patches or feature updates they push them to everyone. I like Windows 10 but whyyyyyyyyy do they have to be so trolly about it?
Can't wait to see the kind of reasonable comments an Apple post generates on Slashdot.

Ah, the classic reply of a man who is beaten: accusing someone of being a paid shill. If you have nothing to say, next time just don't say anything.
