I remember begging the folks that I worked for (a cable-modem company involved with TW. Won't say which *grin*) to partner with AOL and just use their content, rather than us creating our own. "Will Never Happen!" I was told. "They are the enemy!" This was at a time when MS was a 30% investor in us. A few years later comes the AOL/TW merger and I was laughing my ass off. Seeing MS get more involved with AOL is a great example of throwing more good money after bad.
In a past life, I helped two newspapers launch their online efforts, in Texas and in Florida, and trying to get publishers to understand the changing environment was damn near impossible. To make matters worse, papers try to get their print folks to run their Web shops, and the mindset is completely different. Or, when they try to bring in someone with Web experience they think they can pay print salaries. I made the transition from being a reporter to "doing the Web thing" and had to fight for any salary increase, despite bringing in a substantial amount of Web-based revenue - money the paper wouldn't have seen at all without the Website. While the argument taught in J-School is that history shows that no new medium ever killed an old one (TV didn't kill radio, etc.) what it fails to take into account is that a new medium can force an old medium to change so substantially that veterans of that medium may no longer be able to survive. Radio isn't dead because of cable, but satellite radio will kick the hell out of it and force it to change to adapt to new formats and new technologies....
Wasn't there an article the other day about Google buying up dark fibre and some speculation that they could be building either their own network or offering some sort of free Internet access?
So the original is worth watching? My wife hasn't read the book, and most likely won't, but I'd love to introduce her to Lem via the movie if she'll like it.
Agreed! His books are always enjoyable. I didn't seen the recent film, Solaris, as I was sure it would just completely disgust me. Based on what my friends told me after they saw it, I was right. If you've never read any of Lem's stuff, pick it up. "The Futurological Congress: From the Memoirs of Ijon Tichy" is a great read.
You know, I've only talked to a few Jewish people, but they've always drilled me with the whole "Jews are smarter than everyone else" speech.
Then the people you were talking to had no class and little character. Doesn't matter if they were Jewish or not. Such people exist in every group.
I really don't understand why this (or, more particularly the NASA sorta-similar app) aren't java-based. It would go a long way toward opening it up to other OS's. OK, so I can understand not having a Mac version (I don't have to like it, but I can understand it) but not having a UNIX version? I don't get it. For now, we're limited to something like 3D Weather Globe and Atlas (http://www.mackiev.com/) which is cool, but nothing like Keyhole. *sigh*
Ahh, you are correct. It's been a lot of years since I had to study communications law. I just flipped through a copy of AP Stylebook's section on media law. While different states define it (and slander) differently, they do all agree on your point.
the worst post I saw was something about stealing pizza.
Well, depending on where the pizza was "stolen" from and the situation surrounding it, it would indicate libel as libel relies on accusing a person of something that would be considered illegal in a court of law.
I had a DS for a couple of months and ended up trading it in the day after I played with a buddy's PSP. While the thought of using touch/voice/whatever to play was interesting, nothing at this point really takes advantage of it. I ended up hoping someone would release something that would at least let me use it as a PDA. I love the PSP. I use it for gaming as well as movies. My only gripe is the screen is bloody impossible to see during the day/under a bright sun.
Really? Then why doesn't the "pro-life" movement want to be known as the "anti-abortion" movement. The people pushing the hardest for these laws use the bible as the primary basis of their argument, and according to the bible homosexuality is "detestable" and shall be punished by death. That sounds awfully like they're opposed to something...
Should any of the credit card companies that want to use this type of technology hope to have the cards used by the federal government, they'll need to make sure that the card is 508 compliant http://www.section508.gov/ and that would take into account someone who could not speak.
"alternative" sexual behavior... acquiring psycho-stalker ex-girlfriends, getting pregnant." Apparently a sex-change was involved at some point as well *grin*

And BSH is specially designed for Developers, Developers, Developers!
It's still one of the best destinations and tools on the Net. Everytime I show it to someone who has never seen it, they're blown away.
How about some games that are worth playing, instead of all of these accessories...
Damn I wish I had said that *grin*
"Complete Cluster Edition of Windows Server 2003" - I think they forgot a word ...
Or the world's largest distributed computing exercise?

... say, "fulfillment of the Dvorak prophecy." The last thing his ego needs is for /.'ers to agree with him ;)

Because he works for a company with global offices that doesn't allow cameras in the workplace ... like some parts of the world govt.

Oh come on, the url has an anchor tag of "dumbass" and you expect _us_ not to make jokes?!?! *grin*
Being able to drag and move the sections around is great. Nice and easy way to customize the sections.

As an FYI, the term is "en masse" not "in mass."
While all of this is interesting, what is more relevant is the complete lack of proper English in the post. I almost needed BF to understand it.
