What the hell are you talking about? Why would I waste my time "making things up"?? As for "Anyone who actually owns a Tivo" I think the correct response is "Anyone who is such a dork that they memorize everything that's on a screen." Furthermore, Comcast's "On Demand" shows for CBS are free. NBC's cost $0.99. It's not in their interest to grant you unlimited viewing as they want to sell the show either time-limited on On Demand or via iTunes.
"They included DRM to prevent themselves from getting sued, but it is extremely minimal DRM that is easily circumvented by the owner of the Tivo with a single DirectShow filter."
I'm curious what you mean by this. Last night, I wasn't quite ready to go to sleep so I started watching Sudio 60 on the Sunset Strip. I pulled it up from the "What's Playing" (or whatever it's called) and saw the notice that the producer of the content says I can watch up to five minutes of the show and after that, if I stop play back, then the content automatically gets erased after 24 hours. How is that a fair compromise between the people who bought the unit (before this stupid change in functionality occured) and the "content producers." It seems like a complete sellout. The best part of Tivo these days is the user interface. It simply blows away anything commercially available (althought I can't wait to see what Apple delivers with iTV.) I was quite pissed that I either had to watch it all or possibly watch nothing. So if there's a way around that (short of dumping it to video tape) I'd like to hear it...
Seeing as:
1)Both are obviously highly important tech companies
2)The products of tech companies are generally of interest to nerds, and
3)/. is about "news for nerds"
If you don't think this is "news" based on the above three, you should:
1) Visit other sites, or
2) Shut the hell up.
You guys bitch when there's a dupe, you bitch when their isn't. You're the reason for some of the categories available to mods.
The iChat improvements (being able to do presentations, etc.) look really neat. But I have to assume there's a typo in the description: "Another new feature in the Instant Messaging framework is the ability to manage presence. This means that your application can query the iChat status of the user, indicating whether they are available or busy and what their status message is, as well as manipulate it." That can't be right, can it?
Ditto. I set mine to 3K and not only do I not hear them in a totally silent room where a pencil dropping would echo, but after running the app for 20 minutes, my temperature has dropped from 137F to 99F....
"All of the equipment that was lost or stolen contained protections to prevent a breach of personal information."
- Each was given a Dell or Sony battery...
I wonder if they'd be able to leverage the partnership Google has with Current TV. I find myself actually watching Current a suprising amount. Some of the stuff is quite interesting and it could definately stand wider distribution/attention.
Actually, revenue in newspapers is also closely tied to real (i.e. paid) circulation. Giving away papers lowers that actual circulation (beyond a certain amount) so papers have to charge lower fees for the ads they sell. It's an ugly circle that ends up leaving ink all over your fingers:)
Actually, what's interesting is unlike during the election period, the overall threat level hasn't been raised - just the threat level related to air travel. So far, they haven't seen the need to use the scare tactic... but wait a couple of months;)
Sorry, but key part is, "without permission of the people photographed or observed." If there was a clearly posted sign (which I believe the article mentioned) and they continued to stand there, come on to the property, whatever, consent is implied.
Interesting: While I don't read Chinese, if you go to the Chinese version of Yahoo's page and search for "freedom" your top returns include lyrics to Jefferson Airplane songs. A search on the same from yahoo.com comes up with very different answers.

Not a single one ... ;)
Who knew Tony Snow read Slashdot ;)
Is there a mod for "Paranoid"?
It will have a battery life of one minute and that length will decay over the next six months.
The response was a lot more classy than some companies would have done (*coughSonycough*)
... OSTG servers are relocated to California overnight :)
I for one welcome our libelous overlords.
> Still, I've seen exactly the same 'symptoms' that people > ascribe to WoW existing before WoW ever turned up. Well sure, before WoW was Everquest :)

But then my wife would know where to find me ... ;)

Not a Slashdot dupe? Holy crap!
So parent, unlike Dvorak, was modified insightful. Maybe Dvorak should post to comments, rather than articles? *grin*

Oh, I thought the answer was going to be, "He's using Yahoo" :)
Good thing no one tried to leak this story ahead of time ;)

What if they use Google as the portal to search for videos to download and watch?

I think you're giving Neil too much credit *grin*
