Dennis Miller: I don't wanna go on a RANT here but America's foreign policy makes about as much sense as Beowolf having sex with Robert Fulton at the first Battle of Antietam. I mean when a neo-conservative defenstrates it's like Raskalnakov filibuster dioxymonohydrostinate.
Ok, there's been what, like 10 stories about Doom 3 over the past two weeks? Isn't it time the Slashdot powers that be come up with some kind of Doom 3 graphic next to the main post, instead of the Quake 3 logo? Doom 3 is obviously a quantum leap ahead of Q3, I think it's a little bit backwards to use an old icon.
Only in MP.. they're patchin it. Single player is great.
By the way, I'm trying to see if i can hook up my xbox to my PC (windows xp) so I can get on xbox live. I have an Intel Anypoint 10mbps phoneline network card(aka Broadcom iLine - really flaky drivers on XP unfortunately) which i use to connect to my downstairs computer and then to a DSL connection, and an ethernet port on my mobo which i'd like to use to connect to the xbox. Any ideas on how to configure the ethernet port to connect to the xbox and share the connection with the phoneline network? I tried setting up a network bridge, but it didn't seem to work, and I tried setting the phoneline card to "share internet connection" but that didn't work either. I'd rather not get a router re-wire my house if i could avoid it.
I recently purchased NFL 2K5 for xbox.. the first football game I've actually purchased (and I've been playing games since the NES, just never really that interested in football till recently) and I am very, very impressed. The presentation is extremely nice (The "watch sportcenter" and halftime/after game reports are extremely well done and also useful, and the in-game animation and gfx are simply astounding), and I have yet to experience any bugs in the actual gameplay.
All in all, this game compares favorably to Madden 2k4, which i rented recently, especially to someone like me who isn't as familiar with football or football games (which seem to rival flight sims in terms of sheer number of buttons, and RTS's in terms of strategy and coordination of actions) as many. I can understand someone being faithful to the Madden franchise however due to its storied history.
The only complaint i really have is that the trading stuff seems to be needlessly confusing.. I can't figure out how to find free agents for example, and it's hard to quickly check out the stats of players on other teams' trading blocks.
Granted, I haven't taken it online yet, not being a Live subscriber (although it did come with a "2 month free trial" of some sort.. i gotta try and figure out if it really is free or what). It'll be interesting to see if they remove Ricky Williams, and how it will affect my Patriots franchise!
I had a similar set up to yours.. 2500, 512, and a GeForce 2MX. My recomendation would be to get a Radeon 9600XT, it seems like the best bang for the buck. Although I could run most of the high-demand 3D apps back then, they are much nicer now. For example I have been playing jDoom (with high-res model and texture packs) and Tron2.0 a lot, both at pretty high res and have not had a lot of hiccups, the image quality is also very nice and it's reliable(compared to some of the older ATI's, my friend had some major problems with a 9200 series this year). Quake 3 engine games scream along too, although of course Doom 3 is a totally different animal. Tenebrae (a reworking of the original Quake source with doom-like lighting/shadow effects, i don't have the link sorry) runs reasonably well, although Doom 3 will probably run much smoother due to Carmack's insane ability to optimize. At $150-200 it's a steal and, if those benchmarks are to be believed, you should be able to run doom at if not the highest quality at least a very reasonable level or performance.
Here's a question.. how come nobody's put out or thought about a Star TREK mmorpg yet? You could set it during the dominion wars or something, and have vast fleets of starships battling it out, or ground wars with phasers and photon grenades. I guess it's kind of out of the question with the star trek video game license in limbo and the entire franchise a little wobbly at the moment (although Brent Spiner's return may get me to watch a few episodes of Enterprise this fall).
I'm not really sure why you would say Winamp is incomprehensible.. the default buttons are standard cd-player type symbols! maybe we are getting to the point where people are using Winamp before they ever have a CD player! (I would however agree that Winamp 5's menus/options/configuration stuff is a little wacky, for example the notifications stuff seems to be split between the option tray that pulls out of the main interface, and on the right-click menu from the system tray. This is also a complaint of mine with most MS products, the options are not centralized in one place as they should be. (I would also make this complaint about linux, when I was using Red Hat in the labs at school I seem to remember separate "settings" and "preferences" folders for no good reason)
Yeah last year I picked up a mid-sized toshiba (not sure of the inches exactly sorry) for about $280, flat screen, no HD but this was before the big HD "boom," and have been very happy with it. Hooking up my SNES with RCAs, I was blown away by the quality of the image! Xbox also looked great, and PS2 was, well, pixelly jaggy PS2 but pretty good (especially during Final Fantasy cutscenes).
Unfortunately I dropped it moving it from school one time though and now the image is a little too red (noticable when it's a black and white or dark mostly colorless image) and there is visible distortion around the right speaker:( I was a little upset it didn't have individual RGB color intensity controls in the menu, but it's my fault it's broken anyway so oh well. I'll have to get it degaussed again sometime.
That projector in the article looks pretty awesome for the price, as long as you have a big white wall to shine it on. Would be great with a HTPC setup.
I'll humor you. Yes, it's much more like rugby than "real football." It's a much more strategic than what we like to call soccer, requiring careful planning and practicing of formations, plus the instinct and spur-of-the-moment grace of soccer. If you're really interested in finding out what the "deal" is, prove it by reading the Wikipedia article, it's pretty good. Hopefully this is helpful to our non-American friends.
I think it's gotten a little out of hand personally. Funny thing is I have heard at least two other actresses (I'm pretty sure the female lead in the recent bond game was one) make the same complaint as dunst. Speaking as a male, i'd prefer to see something a little more, er, realistic. Game modelers are a little eccentric though.
Mod parent up. Supernerds with no concept of sports at all aside from them pre-empting Futurama (I know - that was me a few years ago) tend to not know about the mental aspect of sports at all. Math-oriented people interested in learning about the more intellectual aspects of sports are highly encouraged to read Moneyball, which documents a bunch of guys' efforts to disect baseball into more useful set of statistics. You might also wanna read up on such Football coaches as Belichick, Madden and Ditka, or rent the film Miracle. (I gained a strong appreciation for sports from my ex-roommate, who was pretty much a walking sports encyclopedia, and yet had a 3.59 cum GPA majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Electrical Engineering).

I haven't actually watched the jeopardy guy (I have no idea when it's on in the Boston market) but it seems like once he builds up a pretty sizable warchest he'll be essentially un-dethroneable unless he makes a stupid, all-in wager and loses. I'm not really positive on the rules, but maybe the value of the questions should be scaled somehow as a function of the defending champion's wealth?
Someday somebody's going to have to explain the whole war-driving/war-flying type thing to me... I really don't see the appeal in doing all this seemingly pointless stuff with wireless just to watch a few numbers fluctuate on a laptop. (I'm sure a lot of you think I should be banned from slashdot for saying that though). (Also, who names their kid "channing?" or "cole" for that matter? The quality of child naming has really gone down of late...)
Since this one takes place in the early 90's, I'm hoping we get some Hammer and Vanilla Ice. Espantoso could probably play Rico Suave. (Hopefully Rockstar is watching "I Love the 90's" this week on VH1!)
When are they gonna come out with the "Hitchhiker's Guide" handheld version of the database? ipods are already smaller than the prop used for the Guide in the 80's tv series, and the total text data is only what like 17 gigs or something? And I could put as much "Yankees Sucks" vandalism in it as i wanted.
Search for Spock was pretty good. Although I wouldn't say it was the best I still think it was a fun movie, despite all the deus ex machina it had. Hell, Cosmo Kramer even ranks it above Wrath of Khan!
Your point is well taken though.. The Star Trek franchise is the Montreal Expos of sci-fi right now - it needs a bold new direction, and all we can do is wait for the decisions of the powers that be.
On a side note, I think the fact that none of the original casts is theoretically participating could be a Good Thing. This way they don't have to cater to a massive ensemble cast, confusing newcomers and shafting hard-working actors and actresses by giving them only bit parts.
This seems like a really good deal, and definitely seems like the free-razor model all MMO's should use, just like they did back in the text-based MMO game days. (Anyone remember Terris on AOL? That game was awesome until they started charging like $7 on top of AOL charges for it) Either way, this could prevent me from getting FFXI instead of everquest, so kudos to sony for being so bold, although they may be the only company with a war chest big enough to run a promotion like this.
I'm pretty sure there was one for old-school monochrome gameboy, at pretty much the same time as the NES one. I seem to remember an old strategy guide with black and white pixely pictures of Scrooge McDuck.
Ohhh you just have to wait.. love don't come eeeasy.. etc. Also, have you noticed that Elec Man's music from Megaman 1 has a melody very similar to some old song by Journey or something like that? I can hear the singer singing like the exact same four notes, and then busting into a electric guitar solo. I'm glad that they preserved it in the Anniversary Collection remix, and also it's cool how they used elements of that theme in Ring Man's stage's remix too.
Peter Griffin: What the hell does RANT mean?

After reading that, I think I'm moving to Canada.
That makes sense then. IANAGSW (game show watcher).

Haha.. that's about the point in the series where Tom Baker was just phoning it in.
Is your slashdot name a reference to the Nimon from Doctor Who?

Sounds like me and the evil, awful Yankees, who suck by the way.
(just kidding)
