I'm a Kubuntu fan, but when I'm setting up older hardware, sometimes even xubuntu and fluxbuntu are too heavy. Vector Linux light edition runs just fine on a 500Mhz box with 64MB of ram. DVD's and other multi-media run out of the box, no difficult config needed. Set up was easy too, though I wasn't using any unusual hardware. It's worth trying out.

Wow. Set down the flame thrower and step away buddy. Linux doesn't "need" wide adoption. It doesn't "need" a lack of choice. It doesn't need the easily confused. And a "decided" upon default system ? There is no central authority to "decide" this for Linux. That is it's strength. Even Linus guides the kernel development simply because people who use Linux trust him. You are welcome to fork everything about Linux, and develop your own "decided" upon version, even get people to use their time to code for you. This isn't a weakness of Linux, it is exactly it's strength.

Linux is not for everyone. If you want EXACTLY one of everything and a lack of choices because you don't want to be confused, perhaps you should stay with windows. There is a market for a fisherprice OS, and it is you. The strength of Linux is Freedom and Choice. Stick with windows, you'll be happier, you want mind the lack of Freedom, or being force fed some corporations idea of what you need on your computer.

  23. Re:Mod parent back up on Mark Shuttleworth Reveals Ubuntu Netbook Remix · · Score: 1

The GPL only matters if you distribute binaries. If you are only using the software, and not redistributing, the GPL doesn't apply to you. Then the license isn't relevant, copywrite law protects the code, not the license. Example, Google modifies the kernel extensively, but doesn't give all of the changes back to the community, because they don't distribute the binaries. And no GPL advocates have a problem with this. Thems the rules, and Google plays by them. So if you just want to use GPL code, and not distribute it, you don't have to agree to the GPL to use the software. David
