America isn't the land of the Brave and the home of the Free anymore. You don't get arrested and tasered because you are annoying some fat people with a badge. He was a danger to no one. There was no reason to resort to force. The people who choose to become cops are very keen to protect their "Authority", so this sort of poor judgement isn't unexpected or even unusual, among the portly who wear blue. The shocking part of this story is the number of people who are OK with this happening to a dumb kid threatening no one. You should be ashamed. America isn't America anymore.
That for Theo, reality is not a factor. He's wasting his time. This isn't to flame Theo at all, I think OpenBSD is fantastic, and people more skilled than I claim he is a great programmer, but public relations is not in his skill set.
The guy who wrote the code in question said he intended for the code to be used under either/or license, and he is just fine with there being a gpl only version. Theo is way out of line this time. He is just upset that he won't be getting any changes back but the gpl will be receiving any improvements for as long as anyone writes them.
With FOSS one developer can stand on the shoulders of all the others who have come before. That isn't possible with proprietary software. This is why M$ and others like it are doomed. Sure it'll take 20 years, but you can't stop the glacier. You can see it already, just take a look at beryl vs aero. The best efforts of a multi-billion $ company in a multi-year effort, vs a handful of FOSS developers. It's just a matter of time at this point. If it's sun's OS or a BSD or Linux doesn't matter, they are all great. The users only benefit. Oh, and best remember to sell that M$ stock. It ain't going up anymore. Not for long anyway.
Next they will just email their super duper virus to child porn operators, then tax evaders, then jay walkers. As the DMCA and the Patriot Act have taught us, if it can be abused, it will. It's just human nature, or the nature of people who choose to work for the man, anyway.
The problem is twofold, first, the political process is funded by corporations, not individuals. Second, all of our politicians are professional politicians. This is a problem because they have only one overriding goal,to continue to be professional politicians. To that end, they will continue to take the corporations money and do their bidding, even at the expense of the same public that elects them.
You point about looking for another country is timely, I've been doing exactly that. Costa Rica is my best answer so far.
Best of luck....
The only silver lining on people like this is that they, like the nazis, are too stupid to prevail in the long run. (Did I set a record for Godwins Law ?)
It's not out yet, but it will be soon. Sorry the site uses flash (which annoys the hell out of me, but it's still a damn cool machine, I'll be buying one when it comes out myself.)
M$ screws over the people who give them money (customers), to please people who don't give them any money. (Hollywood). Why ? The only thing I can think of is that they want to use content to lock people into using a M$ OS. Problem is that every content protection scheme has been broken. All of them. So there is no way you can lock people out of Linux with just content protection alone. I don't believe they will use the DMCA against end users for just watching a DVD either, so the question is, What the hell are they thinking ? Because they are up to something. You don't piss off all the people who give you money for people who don't for no reason.
because UNLESS they are also DISTRIBUTING said software, they probably don't have to worry about the license very much. Especially if they stick to a GPL style license. If they are in the business of distributing software, then they damn well better have a clue on how to handle the terms of the licenses of the software they choose to use. At the end of the day, the free software world doesn't need the suits, it's the suits that need FOSS.
You would think any company with a goal of making money by out competing it's competitors in the market would take this moment to jump in the air and yell, "Holy bat shit Bat Man, we have a hell of hit on our hands. We've hit a home run ! People are willing to spend 12 hours moding our gear to get it the way they want it. I bet they'll be willing to spend a ton of money on our stuff. This is fantastic. Lets give them what they want ! We are going to be rich !" I don't think that's what they are going to do though, I think they are going to sue some people. Sorta lets you know where they are coming from doesn't it ? They want to compete by locking you in. Sorta like some other large company I can't remember the name of just now.
You don't get to the bottom of the slippery slope overnight. It happens a step at a time. Societies rarely take steps in the right direction without massive upheaval. But we keep taking steps in the wrong direction, and it's going to be damn hard to get back those rights once we have given them up. Franklin said that those who give up their liberty for safety deserve neither.
I am increasingly unsure who won the cold war. Seems as if I live in the Soviet Republic of America. You'll need a passport to visit a national park in the near future, which is just a step to needing to show your "papers" to travel state to state. This is just the latest step on the road to our fascist future. Welcome to America Comrade. Heil Bush. (Yes I understand the commies and fascists were at opposite ends of the political spectrum, but they both have totalitarianism in common. We are riding down the slippery slope now, and I don't believe we will be able to stop short of a very unpleasant bottom.
Best of luck to you.....
I have been fat. Over 300lbs twice in my life. It's because I ate too much and sat on my ass too much. Fat people eat too much, and don't burn enough off. Saying anything else is a damn lie. It's easier for some people to eat less or burn those pounds off, but that doesn't change the basic equation.
What's stopping them is that it's clear to everyone who has been paying attention that there is no UNIX code in Linux at all. Only M$ and their stooges would bother throwing money away on such a fruitless quest. There just isn't any money in it.
It's a free country, sorta. Go ahead and do that. I won't be. 1. I want to support a hardware vender who is offering a computer with a version of Linux pre-installed. They will notice where people spend their dollars, and I know where I want my vote to go. It ain't Microsoft. I build all my desktops myself, either from spare parts or the best deal I can find on the net, I get quite a bit of bang for my buck, so I can't vote with my wallet there. When I do buy a new laptop, I don't want the evil empire to end up with any of my cash, and I will be choosing to buy from a company that offers linux pre-installed on a laptop, even if I have to wipe it and reinstall my preferred distro. (Kubuntu) Dell's pricing is a little crazy. I don't think they bargined on having an army of linux nuts keeping track of every pricing model looking to see if somehow someway the linux box was getting screwed. Dell isn't trying to screw linux over, they just have a crazy pricing system. The difference in our opinions is that you believe in doing what is best for yourself in the short term, even if it's bad for the rest of us in the long term. I believe I should do what's best for all of us in the long term, even if it costs me $50 more right now. It's a free counrty, sorta. You are free to drink the cool aid if you want to, they will take it out on all of us later though. Drink with care.
Here is a little snippet from the Fine ruling.....
Surveillance techniques that enable the government to determine not only the IP addresses that a person accesses but also the uniform resource locators (URL) of the pages visited might be more constitutionally problematic. A URL, unlike an IP address, identifies the particular document within a website that a person views and thus reveals much more information about the persons Internet activity. For instance, a surveillance technique that captures IP addresses would show only that a person visited the New York Times' website at http://www.nytimes.com/ whereas a technique that captures URLs would also divulge the particular articles the person viewed.
They seem to be saying it's more problematic if this surveillance technique is capable of yielding any useful information. Please explain why the government would even want to use any technique that's not useful ? Well, ok, some hypothetical other government, not the incompetent boobs we are stuck with. But you get my point.
Another point to consider, the 9th circuit is the most frequently overturned court in the countryhttp://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2 006/11/supreme_court_cleans_up_after.html
If reviewed by the supreme court, it very well might not stand.

Anyone know what OS they happen to be running ?
I doubt any of us could tell the difference. Storm in a tea cup.

it is sustainable long term.
Unfortunately I'm responsible for at least half of those....once for each time I've had to re-install.....
What about their precious bodily fluids ? Did they protect their precious bodily fluids ?

The clue would be that they chose to enter into an exclusive deal with a single carrier in the first place. When you find a clue yourself let me know.
