that ethics and morality are based on culture and social norms
That should read that ethics and morality are based on cultural and social norms, mores, and taboos. Which are discrete concepts and not synonyms. And that statement ONLY applies if you believe in relative ethics/morality.
That's wrong boyo. Assuming you have a poker AI that plays optimally, you'll get smoked. You can't bluff, you can't look for tells. Your money will soon belong to the AI.
Fair enough, that wasn't my impression of the original post. You're right, designed with a sutably high level language the OS shouldn't matter at all, it could be run on any system that has an implementation of that language.
However, given that Linux a) won't be made illegal in the U.S. and b) certainly will not in Japan it's the best choice for them right now. I think the upshot of the article, and the reason for mentioning which OS, is that it's a win for an open OS.
I've thought about this as an idea to speed along my japanese. Out of curiosity, how much of a language base did you start with? What dictionary are you using that contains the slang?
My ass. This is the opposite of the Turning Test, and has so little to do with it that it shouldn't have even been mentioned. Just some dumb ass reporter trying to appear erudite.
I'll take the inevitable off topic karma hit. But after three or four years, when does this get old? Christ, 99% of the time, the lame ass AC's that try this don't even get first post.
Well, mainly we don't care because we actually like it when other countries encroach on the civil liberties of their citizens... it give a pretext for invasion should we desire it.
It's actually pretty popular anywhere where there's a large U.S. military presence. Which explains Hawaii. The areas around Ft. Bragg down south are another. Don't know if it's because of economy or what but it's definitely a visible trend.
Amen. Unfortunately, in the business world the language choice is usually chosen by the least common denominator. Java is easier (for people who shouldn't be programming in the first place), and a lot of kids coming out of college know only Java.
Consequently there are projects here that would better be written in a different language, but Java it is.
I prefer MySQL. Documentation tends to be more accessible, and it tends to be faster. However, there are obvious features missing when compared to Oracle.
Those are the only two I've had extensive experience with though.
Java, of course, is the best language because it was developed with an overall higher level of coolness. It has like this oneness with the world thing going on
Hah. Thus spake the coder with no functional language skills... noob.
Personally, I've found that Tomcat, with an Apache bridge, on a Linux box, though we still have Sun's floating around, and Oracle does a bang up job. Oracle isn't my personal favorite, but we're doing well with this setup. Heavy use of stored procedures, makes the middle tier code generally short and sweet and a JSP front end makes for quick GUI building. Of course YMMV.
I'll bet they do. They're probably young kids. People who have the ability to learn the technical stuff, or who, as of yet, haven't developed a mature sense of how the world works. So they have the means, just no idea that it won't work.
... if it works out to be well written. Most of the guys I know that fool with this stuff generally do it on Macs, which obviously raises the price of equipment. Having a full set up is already expensive to begin with.
Not to mention it give those of us who only dabble a way to play without shelling out large amounts of cash.
Yup, yet another thing this halfwit claims to have come up with before someone else did.
That's because you're a dumb ass. If I had mod points I'd knock you down another notch.
I know the feeling. More of editorial comment than a contradictory one ;)
Since when did they ever? Never. Except for a perpetual motion machine.

Yes. The same could be said for Scheme, Lisp, Perl, and quite a number of other languages, many of which are better for large applications than Java.
Thanks shithead, Especially well before the article was /.'ed. Nice karma whoring attempt.
It's better than Mensa. We can write software to pass their tests, they have to hang Geena Davis.
Yeah, when everyone knows that fags give you Aids... whoops going to take a mod beating on that one.

Nah /. is perfect, there are just too many foreigners thinking they're important enough for the rest of us to give a shit.
So they'll at least be successful.
Let's see,... maybe because the tester in the Turing test is a human? Yeah, I think that could be it, since that IS the definition of the test.
