  1. Re:Thanks Captain Obvious on What Will Happen in IT in 2007? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Vista will make billions. XP would continue to make billions if Vista were never created. Considering how little new features Vista introduces, its development has been a complete waste. Nobody will shell out the money to "upgrade" to it. They'll only spend money that would otherwise have been spent on XP. I don't know the business term to describe this, but if a new product only cannibalizes sales of an existing product and doesn't bring in new sales, whatever money was spent developing it was completely wasted.

You are certainly correct about that. Which is why no federal agency will ever release a report that even hints at the dangers of marijuana being previously overstated. If such evidence were ever discovered it would be promptly destroyed in order to keep from undermining the highly lucrative drug war. This kind of information control for political purposes is nothing new and has either officially or unofficially been part of pretty much every large bureaucratic organization, as the organization must sustain itself in as large of a form as possible.

Considering how Vista doesn't really have all that much to offer over XP anyway, I'm surprised by how many software packages are incompatible with it. Did Microsoft take a copy of XP, tweak it just enough to break compatibility along with system stability, throw in some trivial new features, then call it Vista?

I'd be very surprised if anyone can make a business case for "upgrading" to Vista. Other than a small handful of situations, I can't imagine it would be worth the trouble.

I've had worse experiences with landlines. And cable TV for that matter. At least no one company has a monopoly on cell phones, even though none of them are at all concerned about customer service. Maybe if cellphone providers make just a little effort to please their existing customers they wouldn't have to spend so much on advertising.

DLP better than LCD or Plasma? Not any that I've seen. I have seen numerous DLP screens in stores and the picture looks wierd on every one of them. The only advantage that DLP has is lower cost, and that's rapidly disappearing as LCDs and Plasmas get cheaper. When watching a football game on DLP, you can see the pixellation on the black colors and the motion really lags. Colors in general just don't appear correctly.

This is why HDTV discussions ignore DLP. The marketplace will ignore it too within about a year.

I've been asking this question for months now and have gotten no real response. Vista appears to have not one single feature that I can't get on XP with minimal trouble. Other than being harder to use, I don't see what the difference is. And why would any IT department even consider downgrading to Vista from XP?
