I applaud Google for actually fixing the problem in the USA. It serves AT&T and the other telco companies in America right, for taking $200 billion of government money and delivering nothing for it.
As someone who works in ICT as a network administrator it's quite simple. Stop hiring Windows only "IT professionals". I was hired by my employer because I had Cisco studies under my belt (CCNA courses not exams) as well as a broad base in Linux/Unix/Macintosh as well as Windows. I am working in an environment that is 99% Microsoft, but I slip in the odd Linux machine where it helps me work better. Too many people are locked into the mindset of click click, and Microsoft does nothing to make people look into deeper causes of problems. It's shit like rebooting for driver installs, software updates, small patches etc. That is killing the knowledge of IT workers. The Unix mentality is: oh you broke an application, guess you'd better go fix it, because a reboot sure isn't going to. Whereas on Windows, there's a 50/50 chance that what killed your app is crappy memory management on the OS, or a bad configuration. Far too many people graduate with degrees then just happily cruise into their $40-50k/year jobs. Then when they get called upon to do real IT engineering/sysadmin work, they stick their hands up, because they think that troubleshooting some idiot's exchange issue is the same as reinstalling a proper Cisco or Juniper router/switch. Hell I had a level 2 tech the other day, complaining that it was "so hard" to boot a router into rom-mon mode, and upload a PRE-MADE! config file for $400/hr and that he'd have to document it, because it's so hard. What the hell? that stuff is second nature to anyone who's done entry level Cisco, a course that gets taught at High Schools here! The lack fo basic commandline skills is sickening. The amount of money being wasted on over-priced software is sickening. Because noone is spending the time to learn alternatives to the junk they're using now.
The Independant comission against corruption has arrested and investigated politicians from both the Liberal and Labor parties. The fact that the South Australian government has been resisting creating one I think shows it's effectiveness.
Yes, we have elected a terrible government. However, there will be a massive voter backlash at the next election. Also, the government hasn't been able to pass all the legislation it wants because it is being blocked by minor parties in the senate. The fact is the majority of Australians voted for a shit government and that's what they're getting. They will however be stopped at the next election now that everyone realises just how terrible this government is. My sister is on $150k+ and even she hates the current government. The Liberal party is about to get smacked down for their arrogance and bad policy.
In Sydney we just arrested the State Premier for corruption over a bottle of wine. The system works. The Prime minister is not above the law in Australia. Something that the USA has never managed to sort out with their corrupt system. Nixon should have been jailed, but really the rot had started to set in long before then. The Greens in Australia are a credible threat to the Liberal and Labor parties. Unlike America, where there is no alternative political movement that can ever get into office. The minor parties in Australia actually get to set policy and ensure that the average person retains a speaking voice in our government.

Actually I did use one last year in July, it was an oculus Rift V1 devkit, and for me it WAS the resolution. seeing large black bars, and not enough detail sucked, Frankly I didn't care about the motion tracking/depth of field stuff because my eyes were too busy trying to get around the giant freaking pixels. They really need to fix the pixel density which is the easy part. The latency and refresh stuff they will naturally solve over time. But if they can't get the pixel density high enough in the first place. The latency won't matter.
Resolution is pretty much everything with VR headsets. The only problem I see with this headset is that it won't have much content for a long time. Unless they can port CryEngine 3 for example, there won't be a copy of Star Citizen running on it. It's big-name PC titles that are going to drive VR. This headset needs to support getting content from a PC. Not just it's own Android based content.
From all the comp-sci grads I've seen, going to uni taught them java, entry level c++ (a single shitty communications arts subject) and an intro to SQL on Oracle, also how to install a linux distro, but not use it for anything, so noone touched it again. Almost none of those people work in a real Comp-sci related job. Most ended up as sysadmins in schools or companies. Having the paper meant they knew "IT" most of them can't do anything except pick Microsoft Products and sign SLAs. If you want to be an app developer my advice is get a real IT job, and make apps at home on the side. If they take off, great quit your job, you made it. If not, eh? you have a job like the rest of us.
Actually I pirate a lot of things, but I also dropped over $1250 on Star Citizen, and I bought Rocksmith 2014 on Steam and PS3 at Full Retail pricing. Why? Because they are games I really believe in and actually want to play for a good many years after buying them. Most of the stuff that I pirate is like Mac Donalds. It's cheap, it's nasty, it has no lasting value. But $1250 for Star Citizen? Hell that's a great deal because I love Wing Commander, and that game is going to basically be Wing Commander Online, and I know the developers can make an amazing experience for me. If game developers want customers to throw big dollars at them they have to stop making junk products and start making deeper connections with their players. Where is the Burnout 3/Paradise hybrid game I want? Free-form city driving with a crash mode? Game developers are out of touch. The ones who aren't get my money thrown at them.
Actually yes you will see a benefit. Every driver revision brings new OpenGL features which the older hardware supports. So if your card can render OpenGL 4.1 in Windows then it will eventually render OpenGL 4.1 on Linux. Optimisations that speed up the overall implementation of OpenGL apply to all generations of cards as long as they are non-hardware specific optimisations.
All they need to do to make this happen is find a memory point in windows, where Linux can be injected so it overwrites the kernel and boots linux after enough of the root filesystem has been written to disk. I'm surprised noone has tried to do this before.
Wine is not actually a replacement for windows yet. It still cannot emulate DirectX 1-6 which is crucial for a lot of games and applications. Wine devs need to finish fixing the older parts of wine before trying to run a race against DirectX 10/11/12 The way it stands now wine is only good for a few DirectX 7-9 games.
But would he have had to mug anyone, if his hit didn't cost him $100/go? if you legalise, the cost drops, the quality increases, and the risk of OD drops dramatically. However, the difference is with open source, you CAN fork it and keep working on it. Take mg2modeller for example (on sourceforge) It's my project. I originally wanted to make a Caligari Truespace clone (funnily enough Microsoft bought out Caligari and killed Truespace) so I could model on Linux. The project is basically dead, except I still update the code every now and then when I can be bothered to sit down and code (ADHD, and lacking the ability to hyperfocus or be motivated can be a real bitch most of the time.) The project was originally a dead project I pulled from some other guy's website. I cleaned up his code, modernised it, and got it working. Now it's halfway to being a decent poly modeller with an intuitive UI. More intuitive at least than the mess of UI that is other programs. 3D modelling is one of those things that's insanely individualised. You can't just tell someone to use Blender or Maya and have them change their entire workflow. It just won't happen. I know because I've tried. Caligari Truespace is still the only modeller I choose to use. It's what I know and it's what I want to know. Hopefully some other person can take my code changes and build on them. That would make me very happy especially if they could actually finish the project. Closed source can't do any of this. It will always be inferior software because of this.
Considering we control 1/3rd of the world's Uranium supply I'm actually quite pissed off that Australia does not have nuclear weapons. It would grant us a much larger voice in global affairs and we could effectively ignore the laws and rantings of the USA and Great Britain.
What's not mentioned in the news article is that the most important updates to Nouveau are being posted in the 3.13 kernel. There's going to be Power Management support for most current generation graphics cards. This is a huge thing. Performance wise it is going to lead to a massive jump in performance on the Nouveau drivers. The only other outstanding parts of nouveau are the OpenCL support, and the SLI support. After this update it should be possible to use the nouveau drivers for a lot more serious 3d work than they have been used for in the past.
I'm going SteamBox and I'm never coming back. Finally XBMC running on a games console with a massive selection of titles. Bye Bye Sony/Microsoft I will be running Linux and steam on a 22Tb fileserver.

I think Valve has a good chance here to really smash the big 3 players. Nintendo was out of the race before it even began. That leaves Sony and Microsoft. Valve at the moment have the only console that at launch will run every movie file you have lying around. That alone is a massive thing. How many people bought into the PS3 as a media system idea, only to have their hopes crushed by the terrible DLNA support? The Steambox will work with XBMC, and once people start getting it in their homes and it actually lives upto the hype, this system is going to go big. Would not surprise me if in a few years time they take the living room just on usability. Valve should hire 5 people to work on XBMC full time, to get stuff like airplay and tv tuner support finished and polished.

No rail mount is needed for the PS3 slim, I upgraded mine to 500gb from 160.
