I hear you, however this era of 'altruism' may feel like we are patronizing the Haitians. It is true that giving food and temporary shelters is great and will save some lifes, but you cannot just rebuild a country by doing this.

But, in order to rebuild a country, you need more than just throwing food at refugees. This article is interesting as it brings Katrina experience to help Haiti. It seems the best results happen when the locals are involved. There are many reports of this in Thailand after the tsunami.

There is nothing wrong with helping but helping without asking the opinion of the locals and keeping out of the loop will never give good results, it will leave the impression that you treat them like children and infantilize them. Now that the local ISPs have voiced their opinion, we should listen to their proposals and try to formulate a plan.

The Economist, the FT and the WSJ are not free. However these are specialist magazines aimed toward people who need opinions and news in finance. I do not see how the NYT will find a niche of people who are willing to pay a subscription.

What the analysis is probably missing is that, like many people, although I am subscribed to The Economist, the FT AND the WSJ:
    - 1 - I am more or less forced to read these since it is a part of my job
    - 2 - The average reader of these magazines is earning more money than your average NYT reader
    - 3 - I am not paying for these, my company is paying the subscription so I do not care about the price

In finance, you have specialized magazines such as Risk and Credit which subscription is about a thousand quids a year, and the price of the subscription to the FT is almost irrelevant (except it cannot be higher than the printed version).

I do not think that many NYT reader will get a subscription trough their job.

However they may succeed to implement a system of micropayments to get a bunch of articles, although my intuition tells me that most of people will just switch to a different news source. As long as there is not a monopoly (an oligopoly to be exact) and someone is willing to provide news for free, you will not be able to sell them, it reminds me of the music industry and piracy although the system of low payments from iTunes worked.

However I do not think that my situation was ideal, I was bullied alot more than other kids because I was younger. And the level in science was still weak for myself.

A better system may be to teach earlier classes by level instead of forcing everybody to have the same level in all subjects.

That would have two side effects. First, you would be able at a younger age to show more interest in a particular subject and progress more quickly. Then it would solve the problem of the classes to follow the speed of the slowest.
