  1. Re:tell the entire story of our evolution over tim on The Eye: Evolution versus Creationism · · Score: 1

Evolution, on the other hand, is a belief that information (that's what DNA is - information) has the ability to become both more complex, and more orderly over a period of time.

Dead wrong. Evolution is a change in the frequency of alleles from one generation to the next. (That definition comes almost verbatim from my anthropology textbook. Dictionary.com has a similar definition.) It can also be described as natural selection acting on mutation. Nothing requires that changes be in the direction of complexity or order.

At any rate, we are only beginning to map the genetic aspect of evolution. In time, theories that describe evolution on a genetic level will be more refined.

Staikos sort of hinted at this in the article when he mentioned that pop3:/ isn't terribly useful in a web browser and is more designed for internal use. You can use pop3:/ for easy inclusion of POP support in an app you're writing. Sure, you could use a POP library directly, but the point of abstraction layers like this is to make things easier and more consistent.

The key advantage of KDE's IOSlaves over protocol handlers in Windows is that in KDE they are transparent and available to every application. This is not the case in Windows or OSX. Gnome-VFS does have this advantage as well, but is nowhere near as extensive.

To this day I'm not sure why, especially since I don't particularly notice a problem with sub-pixel hinting in KDE. What makes you say that? Deletion of traits is part of evolution just as much as the introduction of new traits is.

You're sort of right in the sense that *any* mutation by itself is not "evolution" per se. Evolution is the change in gene frequency over time through the processes of mutation and natural selection. Also, if attempts to create a cure or vaccine from this are successful, evolution will have been circumvented as those without the allele for no CCR-5 or CXCR-4 will survive, removing the selective pressure. But you're still wrong that evolution only means adding new things.

That would be correct. The immunity has been known of for a few years. I'm sort of disappointed the article didn't make that clearer, or explain how it works at all.

My biology teacher covered it as part of our lesson on HIV, about 3 years ago. Basically, it has to do with the structure of their white blood cells. Specifically, they lack the CCR-5 protein for the virus to latch on to. The best part is that people can function just fine without this protein, so there don't appear to be any ill effects. The trick now is figuring out how to confer the immunity on those not born with it.

A simple search for "ccr-5" will give a whole bunch of articles for anyone who's interested.

With the overhaul of update.mozilla.org combined with a recent build, extension updates actually *work* for me. My biggest issue is that u.m.o frequently takes a while to get the most recent stuff.

Also, I don't like the new toolbar button for update notification instead of the statusbar item, partially because I can't figure out how it works. It seems to have 3 states -- blue (which I think means there are updates), green, and completely nonexistent. By "nonexistent" I mean it takes up no space on the toolbar so that I can't even move it back to the Customize Toolbar dialog or anything. It's always visible when looking at browser.xul in the DOM Inspector however, so I can't figure out what the problem is that way.

The update checker always finds the DOM Inspector and Talkback as available Optional Components to install, even though I already have both as I installed via tarball instead of installer. Ah well.
