ack154 writes "As previously mentioned here, the guys and girls over at Rooster Teeth Productions (the creators of Red vs Blue) have started a new series based on the Sims 2. As of last night, Episode 1 has officially hit the download servers. Currently available in DivX, WMP, and QuickTime formats, the first episode weighs in at just over 5 minutes. Okay, granted, the writing and Friends-style music sucked, but the production quality was pretty good.

I've got some questions, though, for anybody who's played this game and/or dabbled with machinima. I really want to buy this game just for the machinima capabilities...

    1) How much of the content do you think was script first, production second? Hopefully all of it, but some of it gives the impression that they found some neat in-game animations and threw some voiceovers onto them to (try to) make them funny.

    2) How did they get that guy to gesture with the hand guns in each of the rooms? Are gestures like that scriptable?

    3) I understand Sims have their own language, but some of the mouth animations and postures actually looked like they matched English dialogue pretty well. Now, while I realize some of this might be related to #1, but is this movie indicative of Sims2's ability to make an English-dialogue scene?

    4) Any idea how long a movie like this would take to produce?

I think that Dark Age of Camelot would be way better than EverQuest. Just in the number of animated emotes alone :o)

I love a previous poster's idea of auctioning off the characters to defray the monthly subscription costs.. plus, if you used your real name in it, you'd be a celebrity!

Of course, I'm sure it breaks the EULA in some way, so you'd prolly get banned if you were to reveal your "true" identity.

well....not much there. There has to be something else to it. The writing must get better. I don't think I like all of the animation.

RvB was sort of like Mr. Bill, in that the animation (or lack of) WAS the point. The directorial skills, premise and creative cinematography is what made the RvB series. A spontaneous spark that was quirky enough to drive them to make more.

This just looks like they trying to make a computer animated sitcom/series without having to hire animators. Not going to last unless the stories hold up much better than the premiere.

The theme music's good, IMHO; I like its use throughout the episode. And the opening (zoom in on keyhole) is cute, and the premise is interesting.

The voices, however, are terrible. Wade comes off sounding like he's trying to be Shaggy from Scooby-Doo, the black guy sounds like he's trying to be Mr. T, the pointing-guy looks like he's gay but sounds like a used car salesman, and the Sonny Bono guy with the burning stove has a very terrible fake accent.

The voice actors for Sam and Wade/Durnt sound like they're talking too close to their microphones. The voice recordings need to be softened a bit. And the quality of the black guy's voice is very different from the quality of everyone else's voice; he's much fainter.

The pacing is all weird, too... it needs to be tightened up. RvB had terrific pacing - it's odd to see it so off in this.

when it comes out (nov. 16!), it will have lip syncing and all sorts of interesting physics and graphics to use. And seeing how much ppl modded the original game and how much valve is supporting modders, u could make a movie of anything u want.

I think the difference here is the fact that they're trying to be funny, where the older Red vs. Blue episodes just were funny. It's kind of the same thing as Strong Bad's email, where it was originally funny, but is only sometimes funny now.
