While there are some correct facts in this statement, they are all jumbled up (I am not linking this to pot usage, either). I'm sure someone will post a 15 paragraph reponse to the history of hemp supression in this country, but basically:
Hemp is marketed by media as the mexican name "marijuana" to make it seem new and dangerous
DuPont & nylon
Refer Madness
Marijuana Tax Act of 1937
1940s & 1950s
WWII & Grow For Victory
Large scale hemp industrialization
1980s & 1990s
War on Drugs
300,000-700,000 marijuana arrests per year
(Note: # of marijuana arrests some years is larger than # of all violent crimes combined)
Sadly, hemp industrialization was late to the party, occuring after the cotton & paper & chemical products had been established by industrialists and rich men who would lose market share to newer hemp industries.
This whole discussion *could* take place without any mention of drugs or drug-use, as modern industrial strains of hemp are virtually THC-free. But sadly, corporations and politicians keep it a taboo subject and plant and call people hippees, druggies, oh and criminals.
I guess fearing a lull in SCO news, or maybe providing adicts with their weekend fix, the editors are keeping the SCO-fires burning with these blatent duplicate articles.
I think the link to the windows Real One player should be a *hint* to everyone about what this company is about.. Note: the link is NOT http://realone.com/download/realoneplayer_free.exe
but rather a game to trick the average person into going somewhere they did not want to go.
Does anyone think all the recent PR on slashdot in favor of Real (including quotes about having changed their ways and favorable comments from Helix community) is that much different from the clicky trickery just to download the player? It's just more of the same "try our great new player".. You just wait for the other RealOne(TM) shoe to drop.
For Jebus sake!! We are talking about giving children *speed*. No, this is not an exageration. Our society would love to treat everything with pill, drugs, and chemicals. This isn't what MOTHERS decided they should help children with, but what COMPANIES have decided would help children.
Please consider where these ideas come from, like ADHD. Who is to gain with stomach staples, ritalin, adkins, and whatever else the latest health trend is..
What you may not realize is that Kodak makes a great deal of royalties off of most CCDs manufactured. The have the patents on color filter gels that are placed down with photolithography over the CCDs (and CMOS?) that go into most digital cameras.
I suspect they make tons more on this than any profits from cameras they would make.
Yes, most of SBC DSL does use PPPoE.
Time Warner Roadrunner & WOW! Internet & Cable are similar price in Columbus, usually less than DSL. Note you can usually get 3 months free out of six months, so 50% off if you keep cancelling cable and getting it in your roommates name. I'm not sure what most people get but usually around 200KB/s down and 40KB/s up for cable.
wrong.. SCO says 'hey google give us $1000 which is peanuts and sign this non-disclosure and we'll call it even' -- Google 'ok sounds good to me' -- SCO release many press releases saying Google the largest commercial linux user paid SCO licsensing fee. Soon the $699's start to trickle in from all over the Fortune 500

That's why people in this rural university town were so surprised on Feb. 26, when Federal Bureau of Investigation agents arrived before dawn in unmarked vehicles at Mr. Hussayen's home to arrest him. The agents rousted him from bed and took him away in handcuffs. Over the next two days, most members of the campus MSA, which Mr. Hussayen formerly headed, were interrogated about their immigration status, extracurricular activities and views of the U.S...

The wife [..] says she'll voluntarily leave the United States within 120 days.
The decision by Maha Al-Hussayen put an end to the government's attempts to deport her and her children.
Al-Hussayen's attorney says she made the decision after she was threatened with jail and several character witnesses became too intimidated to testify on her behalf. She must leave by March 6th.
This guy had a *glowing* GPA in grad schoolhere
and here
Sami Omar Al-Hussayen, a Saudi national working on his computer science doctoral degree, quietly moved his student office from the Computer Science Department into the school's engineering isotope lab, apparently without his adviser's knowledge, according to the documents.
Al-Hussayen moved into the engineering lab while he was under surveillance by agents assigned to the Inland Northwest Joint Terrorism Task Force, the documents say. Surveillance teams determined Al-Hussayen primarily used the engineering isotope lab after hours.
I disagree.. you have a fixed # of days for exploration. If this thing can't drive off the ramp it *came* to Mars with, it probably won't fare well out in the open terrain. They sent it into a desert on a hostile planet and they are worried about it brushing against the airbags. Please, maybe they need to do *something* with the rover in case a wind storm comes along and blows it off the lander first.
FFS, you deliberately HID the free version of the real player. Even though I *know* the link is on the webpage somewhere.. I still would miss it 90% of the time. You are a swarmy company and i hope you DO read slashdot.
I have to say that is an amazing piece of work. How cool to be back in middle school and to be able to see exactly what the NASA folks see. And to be able to drive the rover and give it commands. Very cool and very educational and the tutorial is wonderful. It really is kid friendly and easy to use and at the same time complex enough for NASA to use to pilot a robot on Mars.
No. Not fishing for anyone to actually respond to the letter. Why doesn't anyone see the Microsoft ad campaign and SCO's actions are all orchestrated to reduce linux/BSD/open software marketshare and credibility. Don't you think every legal department in every Fortune 500 company is going to send out a letter declaring no one is allowed to contribute to linux, etc.
It worked for RIAA / MPAA and it will work here. Portray everyone as thieves, criminals, and hackers and who will stand up for you? Inate in human beliefs is that you can't get something for nothing, and anyone that does deserves to be punished. This is what happened to Napster, and will happen to linux as it gets pecked at by everyone who feels threatened by the business model it represents.
This is what all of/. said about the RIAA letters.. And you can read yesterday's report about how RIAA tactics indeed are working. Why doesn't commonsense also tell you that SCO's letter will also have the same effect on linux.
If you think CEO's don't view free software movement the same as Napster, you probably aren't a CEO.

If it is in some .rm .ram .rmvb format I say it's just not worth viewing.
Not to worry.. it is correct in the main story text. No one reads down this far.
it *was* originally at bottom but then i added the extra line about the tar location for the linux link and it didn't look as readable.. oh well.

They have a 3D interactive map. This will be really cool when they fill in with more data from Mars.
Why is it that I just got one of the coolest software programs (java) that is free, educational and it didn't crash my computer. I hate you Microsoft.

What a great guy who has contributed so much and is also very helpful. I know I wouldn't be in love with Debian if it wasn't for Klaus.
