I'm in the same camp. Used Gentoo and have more or less switched to FreeBSD for all my servers and for one desktop. BSD, at the time anyway, deteched external drives easier and it was strange that pretty much everything "just worked."

However, when it didn't "just work" is actually where I found FreeBSD to have the greatest advantage over any Linux distro. FreeBSD is just FreeBSD and so when you look at the handbook it always applies. In particular, if you do your installation from ports, things are pretty consistent and that's a really nice change.

Admittedly, my main work machine is a PowerBook G4, but that doesn't change the fact that I greatly enjoy using FreeBSD.

I only purchased those since my other copies were the ones my mom got me in the early 80s which had been watched WAY too many times by my little bother and me.

I refused to buy the Special Editions. It looks like it's paying off for me too. (However, I still thought someone needed to properly translate the PR.)

Thank you so much. I was about to write something because, deep down, I loathe 2ed. It's the reason I didn't role play and thought table top gaming sucked for a long time. The mechanics were a kludge, plain and simple.

THAC0 anyone? The GP is complaining about stacking modifiers but thinks a system with THAC0 was a GOOD idea? You needed a table for like... everything. And the non-linear advancement of attributes? Well let's see here... the jump from 16 to 17 != 17 to 18. (Oh yes and let's not forget the weird ass 18/00 - 18/99, none of which are as burly as 19. And then 25 isn't 25% buffer than 20... it's a cloud giant compared to an orc or something.)

Half the problems he complains about have nothing to do with anything but power leveler characters... something that happens in any game. Ever play White Wolf Games? Power level characters are easy to deal with. Either DM yourself or make sure you have a DM that nips the problem at the bud. I usually play with the same crew, but new plays always get "the chat."

And if you really wanna fore role playing... roll for stats flat out and let them go from there. It really just depends on how you want the game to go.

2ed. had a lot of good fiction with it and a rich background but the implementation sucked balls. This is what Shadowrun (not a very good system either, but better) and White Wolf got me into gaming.

Seriously, this isn't about good in the least. Let me do some translating here. From TFA:

"Over the years, a truly countless number of fans have told us that they would love to see and own the original version that they remember experiencing in theaters," said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts and Senior Vice President of Lucasfilm Ltd. "We returned to the Lucasfilm Archives to search exhaustively for source material that could be presented on DVD. This is something that we're very excited to be able to give to fans in response to their continuing enthusiasm for Star Wars."

Like all PR machines, there's a certain amount of fudging that goes on, let me translate:

"Over the years, a throng of vicious purists have told us that the so called 'improvements' suck balls. What they want to see is the original before we did more damage than repair. There was also a large number of nerds stationed outside George's house chanting, 'Han Shot First.'" said Jim Ward, President of LucasArts and Senior Vice President of Lucasfilm Ltd. "Pretty much, all we have to do is take the last VHS release before the special editions and prime it for DVD release. However, don't make the mistake that we're being altruistic to our fans in any way. The fact is, many of these weak willed nerds broke down and bought the first DVD release and now that their failure is complete, we can sock it to them with yet another release. George loves cash, what can we say? We double charge the weak and now even milk the cash out of the purists that were holding out."

    Dammit. Dammit. Dammit.

I haven't purchased a new copy since the THX remastered VHS tapes that came out just before the "special editions." I'm glad I held out too. (Although the amount I've historically spent on action figures probably counterbalances any imagined savings.)

There was a lot I liked about the special editions. The updated space scenes and basically everything in background of Bespin was nice. I even liked the updated wampa monster. But seriously, why go to all that trouble of adding some awful new musical number in Jabba's palace and not even fix up the lightsabers in the first battle between Kenobi and Vader? It seemed so random.

For every step forward there were two steps back. The Yani style Ewok song at the end and the new singers in Jabba's palace about did me in. And of course, the Greedo thing. Not only did it suck thematically, the action implementation sucked. The first shot looked so... I dunno. The scene was all bad. I haven't watched the DVD version, but I can't imagine they made it much better. The Jabba scene in IV, while cute, was totally unecessary and really never looked right or fit.

The few parts I did see of the new DVD release were enough to turn me off. Boba Fett had this cool menacing voice. What did they replace it with? "G'day mate! I'm Boba Fett and today we're gonna be tracking the WILD HAN SOLO! He's a slippery little bugger, but he's no match for THE BOUNTY HUNTER!" I realize it was the voice from the dude that played Jango Fett but the voice over... I mean... you might as well have neutered Boba Fett.

I wish I had the ability to cut my own with what I did like from the special edition with the original. Maybe I can with these DVDs.

I haven't watched the originals since I saw the special editions in the theater. I'm gonna scoop these bad boys up pretty much as soon as they're available. It's a good day.
