I'd rather avoid refurb, thanks. I'm glad it's working out for you, but I got burnt twice and I don't want to put 200$ down just for it to happen again.

Then again, I pretty much had to. I went from 205lbs to 270lbs in 3 years. My blood pressure was up crazy high and my cholesterol was starting to ratchet up, too. And then, to top it all off, my senior year of highschool (when I was around 205), I had lower back surgery to partially remove a ruptured disk at L4/L5 (football :/ ). The massive increase in weight and the already structurally weakened lower back didn't mesh well, and I developed DDD at L3/L4, L4/L5, and L5/S1 (and minor bulging at L5/S1). In any event, losing the weight became a big priority, so a gym nut I became.

As my sibling stated, it's not the color, it's the ghosting. When you're playing a fast paced action game, and all you see is one long blur, it's pretty obvious that the LCDs aren't up to par (at least not the 21" LCDs, at least relatively cheaply). I have a Dell 1800FP at work that is relatively new. We play old games on that on occasion over lunch. Grand Theft Auto 1 starts streaking in no time. It's really noticeable when you're on a motorcycle and zooming straight ahead.

There are LCDs for gaming that don't ghost, but they're EXTREMELY expensive if you want a lot of real estate + low response times. A 21" replacement LCD is already a lot more than a CRT, and when you factor in the lower response rates ...

(I should also say that the last I looked into this was at Christmas, so things may have changed in the last 6 months. If you find a 21" LCD for 450$ and 8-12ms response rate, let me know. Until then, CRTs are king.)

Ditto. I've found that when I have to move my monitor, putting my chair up as high as it will go, sliding the monitor to the edge of the desk, and then just putting it on the chair does wonder for keeping my back in one piece. I had to have lower back surgery once already (unrelated to monitors), but I don't want to do it again. 21" is crazy heavy to lug around.

With that said, however, I'd rather have to deal with a mountainous behemoth that looked good in games than one that was light and looked like shit.

"New" punk (which I consider to be bands formed at or after the year 2000) isn't my cup of tea either. The middle ages of punk (bands formed at or after the year 1990 until 2000)) is definitely where I'm at, but I can still get into the punk bands that started the whole thing - even including the Dead Milkmen (though I do have to be in quite a quirky mood for it ;D)

The new stuff is agonizing to listen to. Every single singer sounds the exact same. If they weren't whining little bitches, I wouldn't mind so much, but . . .

I live and die by my ipod. My options, for radio stations, include either pop, or the newest Creed ripoff. And about 8 golden oldies stations and one or two classic rock stations (which I also don't have a problem with, but don't go out of my way for). Before my iPod, it was an mp3-playing Alpine head unit.

Since I'm completely off topic already, I may as well go the full nine yards. To hear new stuff, I listen to Launch whilst at work. Any band I kind of like, I go buy the CD (usually from either their site or their label's site - it's usually about 4$ cheaper a CD that way, compared to amazon.com!)

    Now I'll stop rambling. :D

Of course cpu to cpu comparison isn't a perfect comparison. Aside from mere clockspeed issues, there's also the fact that one is a customized gaming system, and the other is a full featured operating system. But, with tools like XPLite, you can start stripping out the parts of your operating system you don't need when you game. I've been doing that for a while. My gaming computer is solely for gaming and playing music.

The key word you used is this: "Personally". There's nothing wrong with your personal decision. But what you see as a pro (only having to buy the system once and not again for another 5 years), I see as a con. That means that, for 5 years, I won't be upgrading at all. I won't be pushing the envelope on any new games. For me, I don't like that. Every game I get "just works" for me, but that's because my hobby is a: keeping a really sweet computer setup and b: tweaking my system to perfection. I enjoy that stuff. The fact that I can't do that with a console is a complete turn off to me. But, again, this is all my personal likes and dislikes. The point I was going to try to make in my earlier post, but got rushed into finishing before I could, was that each system type has their place. Depending on your needs/wants, one may look better than the other. But to say "Oh, consoles are better than PCs" or "PCs are better than consoles", as if it were a universal truth...well...that's just fucking stupid.

Funny, I've never understood how people think a pentium 3 733 has near as much horsepower as an athlon 64 3000+. Or that the game even looks nearly as good on the console.

As a huge fan of both consoles and PCs, they both have their place. I would never try to play an FPS on a console. I tried getting along with it for months with Halo 2, but it was like trying to ride a monkey instead of a horse. It's just not meant to be. I also would never want the "latest and greatest" cutting edge game to be on the console - why? Because the graphics aren't going to look nearly as good - how can they, when the video card is about 3 or 4 years old?

Making blanket statements isn't going to work. Consoles do some things well, PCs do some things well. Until I can treat a console like a PC (ie: hook it up to an extremely high resolution monitor and have the option to use a keyboard and mouse), for me, it's going to be my second choice system. With that said, trying to have all my friends huddle around my monitor as we play Double Dash isn't going to work either. There's certain pros and cons to each, and it's up to the individual to decide what they like more - high powered FPS games with input devices that allow for much higher response times, or something that always "just works", can be played with tons of friends, everyone sitting around the living room drinking some beers.

I don't necessarily see why bashing someone is against the truth. To me (and I realize this isn't realistic), if you have nothing truthful to say, you shouldn't open your mouth. The fact that people are so intent on putting "spin" on facts sends me into a rage. In my mind, and in my life, I'm not going to open my mouth against someone unless I have something factual to say (with some semblance of proof). But when I do, I will "bash". That doesn't mean I'm going to bash according to "agenda", either. I fucking hate religious conservatives in power (at least, if they're using their religion to try to make laws that determine moral right and wrong for me). We seem to have a lot of those nowadays, so I tend to bitch, and bash, a lot. I think, having stated that I dislike religious conservatives telling me what to do, it's pretty plain I'm against Republicans and for Democrats. With that said, however, when Republicans do something right, that is logically sound, I'm not going to bash them. I'm not going to fabricate some lie just to knock them down, just because they're Republicans. Also, when Democrats do something fucking stupid, I'm not going to give them a free pass on everything. They can be a bunch of cockbiting fucktards, too, and I won't hestitate in the slightest to call them on it (not that they even hear me, but that's not the point).

The point is: bashing is not necessarily bad, if, by bashing, we mean "intense, negative criticism". It's a tool. Misuse of that tool, however - THAT is what's bad.

Isn't a "news" source supposed to do the bashing? That's kind of their job. But it IS bad form for a company to rip on their competitors. It gets really old, trite, and pathetic, really fast. If you can't let YOUR product do the speaking for you, then maybe you should shut your mouth and get to work on making it better. And if it is better, then you, as a developer, don't need to say a word. Your actions have spoken much louder than your pie hole ever could.
