Indeed it IS real. The same thing happens from such mundane phenomenon as lightning to a lesser extent. My work used to involve design of systems connected across as much as much as 20 miles by cables and repeaters. EMP (if you want to call it that) from lightning was occasionally a very serious design issue. IIRC, expected EMP from an high altitude nuclear device is expected to be on the order of 1000 times the magnitude of our problems with lightning. 'course, the above neither proves nor even adresses the reality of nuclear EMP - its just meant to sound like it does.

Just because Philips makes it, does not mean it will necessarilly be used. For years they have made chips which *should* have put my company out of business, but Philips is often simply too expensive to use on this kind of almost disposable device. My company is doing fine because my would be competitors do not want to pay for Philips parts.

Yes, and it is important to think about *how* we got that smart. We are exactly as smart as we *need* to be in order to survive this planet and our own nature. It is difficult to imagine natural evolutionary pressures which could have produced our species any smarter than it is. Why do people assume that aliens will be so much smarter than us? What evolutionary pressures would make them so?

No, it is likely that aliens (unaugmented) will be approximately on the the same order of intelligence as the dominant species of this planet.

Promise is crap and more expensive it is the more crappy. I spent over $800 on a Promise Supertrack100 6 channel card. It was slow, slow, slow, and constantly corrupting data. Promise never bothered to make a new bois for it and the tech people blamed the motherboard (ASUS). I eventually did an "Office Space" on it - felt good. Now, 3-ware - there's a quality product. Solid.

Basically, Canadian tax payes are paying not only for their own health care, but in addition are running the equivalent of one Canadian university SOLELY to staff american hospitals. Canada does NOT have better health care or more accessable health care than the US.

Myopic is not looking past the first step of the capitalistic process. What happens is that labour overseas stops being quite so cheap as more and more labour is demanded. Eventually there is a natural equalization between the economy you are "abusing" and your own. No, it is not 100% good for your own economy to export jobs, but at the same time, it is not catestrophic either. Also, this HIGHLY conservative behavior has the most liberal effect of bringing poorer nations more in line with western standards of living (while bringing down the west somewhat). That is the true VALUE of capitalism - if left alone, it will always self-equalize.
