The appearance of them is as old as corroded copper wire.. What has changed is that some materials specialists have figured out how to characterize these so called "parasitic" diodes and fabricate them with predictable parameters. As others have pointed out they are quite useful as they can be fabricated in the metal layers above the doped silicon, thus removing this type of component from the die and placing it in the metallization layers where there is a lot more room.
Now basically, as I understand it, diodes do not take up 1/2 a transistor foot print on the substrate. "Free as in beer" diodes.... from a floor-planner's perspective.

I have seen custies in the convenience store I work in with cracked iPhones.... they seem to work just fine. Mostly these are G2 and G3 iPhones... based on the purchasing habits of these custies I can safely assume that they have abused their iphones... and yet they work fine... and these customers seem to have no issues using them cracked screens or no....
As a test engineer I often experienced the fallout from #1 & 2# and suffered serious cognitive dissonance from #3 & #4. I gave up software testing after 17 years.

These are not really complex molecules... and the transitional metals are fairly prominent in key structures within living organisms. Not having studied this for many years I can only guess... but it seems to me that the biochemists are looking for the roots of life in the wrong molecules.
While it would be possible to build a large device with thousands or millions of memristor junctions ganged to scale the effect up to macro scale, it would largely be a waste to do so. This innovation is more useful when millions of memristors are used in a more elaborate way as storage, and/or logic.
It is important to note that ALL of the nano-wire meshes are memristor based. It turns out that at nano-scale it is hard NOT to get a structure that has memristor behavior. IFF you have a pinched hysteresis loop in the I-V plane, THEN you have a memristor.
A key difference here is that these memristor style storage cells dissipate very little energy during SET/RESET operations; far less than FLASH, or even DRAM. And they dissipate damn near nothing during read-sense operations. While the media access controller is still traditional CMOS, it is present only at one end of the stack, and thus can be cooled by attaching the die to a traditional ground plane heatsink, just as any other chip is.
It is perfectly reasonable to expect that memristors can be stacked quite deep in the Z axis and not suffer excessive heat build up within the array.
A more serious concern than heat dissipation in the storage cell array, is the huge amount of parasitic capacitance that these large arrays create. HP has some clever configurations that mitigate this capacitance, but it is a concern with tall stacks.

IMO this seems like open season on the under-age gamer. Peer pressure is rampant in MMO*s not just from the proprietor, but from their own customers.

Only pain of legal entanglement, curtails their ambition(s). Often, the legal system, does not work satisfactorily to prevent corporate excesses from impacting society. If an individual, natural, person had that much power and so little moral restraint, what law COULD restrain them?

Here, where I live on a small island, we have several small trailers that are parked at the side of the road along various high risk areas. These trailers have a RADAR/LIDAR system linked to a large red LED display that shows your speed. There is also a large speed-limit sign posted next to the display. They are deployed here during tourist season. There is no ticketing system linked to it. It also a nifty way to check your speedometer calibration. The display is quite large too. This makes it visible to drivers further behind you. They see your speed as well. I am fairly sure that reduces anonymity for speeders, especially in a small community.
This is where the 55 MPH speed limit came from. Studies showed that slowing down to 55 MPH WOULD decrease fuel consumption, and MIGHT save lives.
Seems that modern political idiots just focused on the 'saves the children' aspects of the 55 MPH law, without thinking it through.
55 does not appear to have any effect on rate of traffic accidents, or fatalities. What does change the rates is differential speed. 55 traffic mixed with 75 traffic would increase relative driver risk by about 30%.
Studies done in the 90's showed that signage and regulation reduced driver safety.
I wonder to what cause I would be most at risk? If I drive the double nickel in a speed-zone, I am more at risk for being shot by a road-rage drive-by, or being rear-ended by a 'slalom-racer' cruising through the pack at 70+? An that right-lane limit doesn't help much. If the median speed in the area is 65 the right lane will not be much slower than 65. So in this context, simple reason and self-preservation says, whip that hamster up to the flow of traffic, or your gonna die...

No one (except Apple) bitched about the crappy developers that undermined MacOS APIs by calling behind them. Everyone bitched about the computer crashing. It didn't hurt software sales.... it hurt Apple's sales.

Their systems are far more exclusive than Apple. You must use their dev tools, and hardware to develop games. And not just anyone is allowed to develop for them. Until you can square that, I don't think Apple is doing anything extraordinary with the iProducts...
This is common sense. Do not do anything to frighten a cop. They will kill you. It is even worse when you frighten a bored cop since they will now have extra incentive to make sure you don't get to testify against them....
