The whole problem is that the same land is Holy to both Muslims and Jews. And to the disgrace of both their religions they have been unable to share it for centuries. It's also Holy to Christians. No matter what the theological truth is, I am sure that if God exists they are very disappointed. Humanity is on the brink of greatness, but we're risking it all because we still haven't learned to share.
The fact behind M.A.D. remains valid, even if the policy is ignored. If anyone uses nukes there, everyone will use them there and WW3 begins everywhere. The Israel vs. Jew dicotomy (choice) of who is to blame is false and unproductive. There have been crimes committed by both sides. But the majority of the citizens of both sides are not in favor of the continued hostilities and just want to live their lives in peace. Unfortunately, those majorities are not in power. Kind of like here.
Yeah, just a bit religious.:-) I would say I can probably type faster with a stylus than you can with a thumbboard. Which would mean more if the virtual keyboard driver in Mobile 2003 SE did not drop (annoying) or mutate (worse) characters at higher input speeds.
A properly designed protocol would not be of a fixed bit count, period. Such as 'first byte is how many bytes of data follow, or 255 to indicate 254 data bytes and then another count byte, repeat until non-255 count byte'. Static sized objects are Wrong and separate the inferior code (or protocol) from the superior. You'd think the design of the next generation protocol would incorporate that wisdom. Maybe the next next protocol (and there WILL be one).
The process the article describes requires having all your blood drained out and then replaced. Somehow I don't think that'll sell very well. I could be wrong.
The "couple of people" the author knows are morons. If Network Neutrality is ended, the price for bandwidth to sites which are contrary to corporate profit interests (like free software repositories) will be deliberately raised to make it economically impossible for them to provide even the bandwith they have NOW. The idea that the end of Network Neutrality is going to be of benefit to anyone but the corporations that run it and their friends is utterly asinine. These "couple of people" are either fools or apologists. Network Neutrality must be maintained or the net as we know it is doomed.
[Rant] Anyone who votes for anything other than the Democratic ticket in 2008, no matter who is on it, is either a fascist or a fool. The Democrats are only the lesser of two evils, but they are the lesser and the only non-Republican choice with any chance of winning. I hope to God the fools on the left who threw their votes away in 2000 and 2004 voting for pie in the sky candidates with no chance of winning realize by now that they need to vote for the candidates who CAN win. Candidates commanding 3% of the vote cannot win, they can only drain enough votes from the Democrats for the Republicans to win again. Since all modern presidential elections are only a couple of percentage points from 50/50, that is CRITICAL that that 3% is not wasted on Nader (BURN IN HELL, you country ruining mofo) or other such distraction again in 2008. Spread the word: Vote Democrat in 2008, NO MATTER WHAT. Unless you want eight more years of this fascist hell Bush has turned our beloved country into in just six years. [/Rant]
"Whatever Sony's plans, the tempest [over the patent] illustrates the changing nature of ownership as millions of people accumulate vast collections of digital entertainment. Few people realize that when they buy software or music or movies, they are actually buying a license to use, watch or listen. That's why it violates copyright laws for people to sell copies of their music collection.
Well, that's what the media monopolies claim you're buying. The courts haven't agreed that this is binding on the buyer, and since even their own ads say "own it on dvd", not "license it on dvd" they might not. If they do find in favor of the media monopolies, you will be unable to sell even your original copies of purchased media because the license will be "non-transferable". The law of First Sale prohibits this kind of crap for standard purchases (which is why they're using this 'license to access' method). But it is/were true, since I'm buying an license to listen/watch it would seem to undercut their legal basis for controlling what carrier I listen/watch it on.
How can a 'state agency' use the Patriot Act to subpoena a Facebook profile?"
Because the Patriot Act was designed to enable this kind of thing. That's why some people tried to keep it from being renewed. Asking "how" is about as pointless as asking how the KGB used to operate in the USSR. Just assume you have no privacy and you'll be fine. Don't like it? Move to a democratic country where freedom is more than just a buzzword(*).
*: As the election of 2000 proved, in which the POPULAR vote that was unambiguous in giving Al Gore the majority was ignored, the US is a republic but it isn't a democracy. And the longer King George and company remain in power, the less it is even that.
The common whine about Wikipedia and "editorial neutrality" reflects the common ignorance of the fact that ALL sources have biases. At least in Wikipedia's case, the issue of bias is openly accepted, discussed, and worked around/with.
How the US "justice" system works is that the richer party wins. Rulings on the issue so far have not involved the big media corporations and thus vary in outcome and are few in number. Once one of them brings it to trial, the ambiguity will be resolved since there's no chance in hell of them being the poorer no matter who the defendant is, and once they decide to act they'll sue as many victims as possible. If you do it now, you probably won't get sued. If you do it in, say, two years now that youtube et. al is making video cliping commonplace, you probably will. Creativity and legal safety are an oxymoron in this country, sadly.
Just what this proto-police state needs, another device to manufacture psuedo-scientific "evidence" with. As informed people are aware, the old "Lie Detector" does not detect lies and is as scientific as Scientology's "e-meter". Likewise, informed people will be aware the new one doesn't either. But since most of the public is ignorant of this and the government couldn't care less, they will continue to be used anyway.

One of the aims, maybe. Of course, it could also be used by the goverment to deactivate all such civilian guns at will or cause them to fire or otherwise malfunction by meanings of jamming or otherwise manipulating the trigger signal.
"I think it would have been so easy for me to just resign when all of this started happening," she said. "But it's not just me anymore. This is so that other librarians, when faced with a subpoena, will do the right thing."
Actually, it goes beyond that. A while back there was an article documenting the plight of users of some trial electric car (sorry, I forget which one) in California who wanted to purchase their leased electric cars outright instead of letting the vendor destroy them as it wanted to. The electric car, like the solar concentrator and the sterling engine, is another Surpressed Solution. Instead, get ready for more oil wars and more Chernobyls. Sigh.
Wasn't this article previously posted weeks ago? Same answer as then: forget the CA, sign it yourself and make the required user ok of the resulting certificate part of the documented process for accessing your content. The CA system as implemented is just a bit of high tech profiteering. As far back as the 90s they were charging outrageous repeating fees -- and not really doing anything for the money, as the cases of CAs issued to fraudulent companies proved.
Note that only one of the scientists mentioned is even remotely qualified to discuss the subject, namely Dr. Morgan. The rest are in fields that have nothing to do with climatology, which is the branch of science involved in determining the validity of the global warming theory. Among climatologists there is little debate about it. That the global warming denial crowd can find unqualified people with degrees in unrelated subjects who concur with their refusal to recognize global warming is as unsurprising as it is meaningless. I suppose they've learned something in that they no longer quote scientists from the oil industry, the conflict of interest in that being glaringly obvious. Global warming is already happening. It will keep happening, denial by various fools not withstanding. A shame the costal cities will have to be lost before their stupidity is no longer allowed to drive policy.
In addition to the scientific reasons, the command to "be fruitful and multiply" dictates that we colonize space if the result is to be anything other than misery.
Speaking as someone who pays the sometimes rather high prices required to own FULLY legal copies of Microsoft products (i.e.: NOT resold volume edition cds with illegally provided activation keys, etc.), I was extremely angry to learn Microsoft lied to me about the nature of a product REQUIRED to access advanced support services I am legally entitled to as a customer. If I had know it was spyware (which it is, since there is no documentation of its real behavior), especially unremovable spyware, I would never have installed it. Too late now. If this country had a real justice system, Windows users could file a class action lawsuit in response and win. But since we can't, I'll just remember this the next time Microsoft asks me to install anything and refuse. Burn in hell, you lying monopolistic privacy violating assholes.
"he who has the gold makes the rules." as the coming end of network neutrality and with it any real access to non-corporate content (non-corp websites being allocated something like 1K per minute, etc.) will demonstrate. was a nice net while it lasted.
The real question is, just how much of this kind of crap is the US workforce going to take before they march to Washington and hold the politicians' noses in their armpits until they outlaw outsourcing in general and this kind of economic blackmail in particular. Oy f'ing vay.
Eh? From what I have read, I thought Windows Mobile for smart phones was an enhanced version, not a reduced one?

They don't care about legal authority. Following the law is for users, not Microsoft. They can do what they want. Get used to it.

When are they going to talk about their "mistake" in 2000 when they helped Bush steal the election in Florida by illegally removing blacks from the voting rolls? Or has everyone forgotten about that by now? It'd sure be nice to see some of these traitors to our country get their Constitutionally mandated punishment, vs. being interviewed in magazines.
"I think it would have been so easy for me to just resign when all of this started happening," she said. "But it's not just me anymore. This is so that other librarians, when faced with a subpoena, will do the right thing."

It's an excuse for MS to prematurely EOL (End Of Life) 98, thus generating that much more money from those forced to upgrade.
