  1. Partial answer to twelve marbles on Your Favorite Math/Logic Riddles? · · Score: 1

12 marbles, 1 balance scale, 3 chances to use the scale.
One marble is different in weight (lighter or heavier).
How do you find which one?

3 places to put the marbles,
Balance Scale [left side, right side] , and on the table.

3 states for the balance Scale: left side goes up, left side goes down, no movement.

The full answer is very elegant.
    Very fun to write down.

For navigation and selection of visually complex and cluttered options, the eyes might the best way to go. I still doubt the quality and speed of that interface for text entry. The software needs to be really well designed so that you're not selecting individual letters most of the time.

I think that using the body's nervous system offers more variables. I understand that the eyes are very fast, but they can only do one thing at a time. Probably a system that combines excellent nervous system translation and eye movement captation will be incredible. I'm all for giving everyone their favorite input system. Some people prefer to play the violin, others the tuba. There is no reason for computer interfaces to be standardized, and we shouldn't be scared of interfaces that have a very long and slow learning curve. Usually, when something is hard to learn, you can do more complex things with it when you know how it works, compared to something easy that becomes troublesome because complex actions require too many simple actions.

Just like benchmarking computers, there should be people benchmarking interfaces.

    Brain link!

    Computer interfaces suck.

Programming languages are visual and depend on the computer screen or whatever the computer outputs. Changing the way it is disposed on the screen is just trying to make it cute.

The major restraint right now on programming is INPUT.

The mouse dates back 50 years,
the keyboard's even older than that, and it's designed to slow down users! (both cause +RSI and other crap, and are very slow and innacurate)

For example, where are dual cursors?
There needs to be more OS implementations and design to have superinterfaces. Make the long, tedious, well planned out programming that will accelerate future programming. And think out of the box: Future programming will not be done with a keyboard and a mouse.

    http://sloan.stanford.edu/MouseSite/1968Demo.htm l

Why can Stephen Hawkings write speeches, scientific texts and do tons of complex things with a single thumb clic?

Where are the standards for new interface developpement?
The OS developpements to support the hardware?

Screens are getting bigger, why do I have to rely on a menu in the top left of the screen if i'm working in the bottom right of a 2nd screen?

Design and manufacture of new technology is slowed down by the limited ways we have to transfer, collect, manage and create the complex data we have to deal with. F*ck Moore's law! With the keyboard and mouse, the bottleneck is between us and it. The idle time prooves it.

Computer's are an instrument. Instruments are allways hard to master. They evolve. They're not supposed to only get cuter.

Imagine a computer using 50% of it's processing power to know what you want /to say/it to do... /rant

It's a great idea. However it probably only works well with "laserlike" frequencies, high frequencies that bounce off materials in a straight way, like the pool ball.

Lower frequencies aren't so directional, they diffuse alot. When they will be replayed from the noise location, they are going to go everywhere. It's going to be muddied even more, and everybody is going to hear it.

That's why the time reversal technique seems to be working for medical uses, because it works great with ultrasound. It allows energy to concentrate on one area.

As for the market domination, well, time reversal (on it's own) doesn't allow for sound to be heard in a directional way (the beam is sometimes a good thing).

It probably needs methods for mapping the obstacles at which you need to reshoot the sounds. It's not a "take it out of the box and it will work" technology. And most importantly, it needs obstacles...
