Why are we comparing a Beta 1 to a shipping product? We all know Microsoft still has stuff to shelve before they ship.
"They never would have been announced during 2004 had Microsoft not first revealed that it was making the feature a standard feature of the next Windows."
Riiight. Because we all know that Spotlight was bolted onto Tiger in response to Longhorn. Don't these things take months (maybe years) to create and fine-tune?
"In short, though there are some bizarre inconsistencies in the Tiger UI, it is far more elegant looking than Aero in Windows Vista Beta 1."
What inconsistencies? He doesn't list them in the previous paragraphs, he simply concludes "Hey, Tiger's a little messed up, but it's still better!"
"Tiger does however have a hard-to-find "Spotlight Comments" section the Get Info box for any document in which you can add keywords or phrases as desired."
It's not that hidden, it's right at the top of the Get Info window; and it's not just for documents, it's for *any* file or folder.
"Windows program that allows the monitoring of laptop computer batteries and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). Graphically see the battery charge / discharge rate, diagnose problem battery cells, compare your batteries performance with expected discharge rates and see the status of each individual battery pack (when multiple batteries are in use). Agreed. The Leatherman Charge Ti I have now does just about everything I want it to, sans having the T6/T8 bits I need for work. If you could buy the "bookends" of the multi-tool, then buy the different parts to slip between the bookends, that would be fantastic.
There's no way to make the ultimate multi-tool (not leatherman, which is a brand. What about swiss army knives?) , everybody's got different requirements.
Take it to Kinko's, or Staples, or any other print center. It'll cost you, but they can bind it for you too. They'll do it right and for a decent price, too.
This is a minor annoyance for me being a Tivo user. I really wish I could easily do this. FF'ing the commercials is easy and the Tivo does do a good job once you get the hang of it but I would LOVE to see them just gone completely.
You can program your "Jump" button (The button with the arrow going into the line, it's opposite the replay button) to skip 30-second increments. When viewing Live TV, Just press:
Select -> Play -> Select -> 3 -> 0 -> Select.
When you press the 3 and the 0, the TiVo will "bong" at you, but when you hit the final select button, the TiVo will "bing" three times at you (like you hit the thumbs up button).
Now that my Jump button is set to 30 seconds, whenever a commercial comes on, I hit it 5 or 6 times, and when I end up in my show, I hit the Replay button 2 or 3 times to jump back into the end of the final commercial. The whole process takes about 6 or 7 seconds.
Another thing to remember is that the Jump Button does 30 seconds, the Replay button is 8 seconds, so pressing the Replay button 4 times is the equivalent of a Reverse Jump button.
I don't think this is industry-wide. The Dave Matthews Band just came out with a live album from their tour-ending shows in 2002. You can buy the best songs from all three shows on a two-disc set, plus it comes with a DVD with 6 or 7 songs from those shows, plus highlights of the Gorge venue.
It's not as if it's a 2-disc jewel case and a DVD case, I mean it's all one case - open it up and the DVD is on one side, and the two CDs are overlapping on the other side. It's ONE unit.
Now, the Dave Matthews Band has been around long enough that they have pretty damn good control over their own content, and they release their albums on Bama Rags (their own label, i think), but it's also distributed through Columbia, so it's not completely independent.
It's HARD to upgrade when you want to add a little more zip to the machine.
What, exactly, would you want to upgrade? RAM? I think it's easier to install RAM on an iMac or eMac than on a PC. I don't have to take the case off my Mac and fumble through ribbon cables to get to my RAM slots, just take the cover off the bottom.
If something goes wrong (and yes, even Macs go wrong from time to time), my folks won't have a bunch of friends around the corner who know exactly how to fix that problem, or a friend with a CD crammed full of useful little fixer applications.
I don't want a friend around the corner who "knows computers" to come fix mine. I'd rather have Apple's phone support do it. And considering that Apple has the best support, says Consumer Reports, i'm even more comfortable with them.
At the end of the day, I just don't see how a Mac can be any less prone to attacks than a PC with Zonealarm, AVG Anti Virus, Firefox and Thunderbird installed.
Because I don't *want* to have to install ZoneAlarm, AVG, FireFox and Thunderbird? Don't forget Ad-Aware and Windows Update every week!
I love the fact that I can regularly install little upgrades and bleeding edge software onto my Linux box.
And you can't do that on a Mac?
I love the fact that I can check out the code and see exactly what makes it tick.
I love the fact that if I pay for any of this, it is usually through choice, and a project's little Paypal tip jar. I love the fact that the money I pay is going directly to the developers that write the applications that improve my life, rather than to a company that holds one hand with the RIAA behind it's back
Just had to get that shot across the bow, right? Well, Apple isn't the only company doing a Music Store, and they're not the only ones who had to deal with the RIAA and license fees. Apple has stated that the artist does get a chunk of money for songs sold.
...and in all likelihood, would spend the majority of the cash on developing some nice new injection moulding techniques for the cases, rather than REALLY innovative software (yes yes I know about iTunes - but innovative SOFTWARE rather than just a shiny new UI would be nice. I've been able to play MP3s since before 1995 on my PC)
Wow, you *really* haven't used a Mac. I can only begin to list the innovative apps that Apple's created: iMovie, iPhoto, iDVD, Final Cut Pro, all the way down to iCal, Address Book, Safari and Mail. Each of these apps has so many features that make it more than just your basic app.
And I smile when I see that Linux desktop share is projected to overtake Apple's within a couple of years.
Aww, that's cute. Too bad people like your mom and pop won't be those people switching to Linux, they'll be too busy installing FireFox and AVG on their PCs.
To be honest, I feel that for Apple to succeed, they need to learn how to cut the elitist attitude.
The elitist attitude comes from knowing exactly what the customer wants then developing a product to fit that need. Example: iPod!
Stop producing overpriced machines in funky colored perspex!
eMacs start at $799. Find me a $800 PC with a 17" CRT, USB 2, FireWire, Combo Drive and video editing software, then I shall bow down to you. SuperDrive eMacs start at $1,000, so find me a $1,000 with a DVD-R/CD-RW. Oh yeah, Apple hasn't done colored computers in a while. so you might want to get a new MacMall catalog that's not from 2000.
Stop loading your desktop PC equivalents with a million and one interfaces that the average Joe will never use.
Why do so many people worship this one guy? Is this because he is such an egomaniacal elitist control freak?
Yes! He has the balls to do what some people dream of. He's a guy who will go ALL IN on a 4-5 off-suit because he KNOWS that he'll make a straight on the flop. (Yes, i'm a Hold-em fan). He can push USB and FireWire and make it mainstream. He can push a UNIX-based OS and have people use it.
Since 1984 he has done some good things (NeXT, the first iMac, OS X), but a lot of really bad ones.
Thanks for making my job easier and naming the good things, but you failed to mention the bad things! Like what, killing the Newton? The Cube was a technological marvel, but was overpriced... Name a few more! C'mon!
In the meantime, the Mac's marketshare fell below 2% and has been overtaken by Linux Desktop's share.
MARKET SHARE is not the same as INSTALLED BASE. Market Share is a percentage of computers sold in a quarter / year. i.e. of every 100 computers sold, 2 are Macs. Installed Base is just that, how many computers are Macs? The numbers float around 11-13 percent.
As for Linux overtaking the Mac, you word it in such a way that Linux users are switching from Mac, whereas Linux and the Mac are about even when it comes to market share. The word "overtaking" is deceptive. Just because I "overtake" you in traffic doesn't mean you're driving slower than you already were. It just means i'm driving faster. Just because Linux has a larger market share, it doesn't mean the Mac is losing ground to Linux.
Lots of people agree that the real reason of the Mac slow but sure descent into Hell is Job's elitist vision and its results, overpriced hardware, rumor cult(ure) at Apple, etc.
Let me take a minute and digest what you said....wait..not done...okay.
What people? If anything Jobs' vision has made the Mac what it is today (compared to 3, 5, even 7 years ago). Think of it this way. You're not paying for overpriced hardware. You're paying up-front for some incredible software that is already pre-loaded onto the Mac (Simple, junk-filtering threaded eMail, pop-up blocking Safari, vCal-reading iCal, System-wide Address Book, iLife++)
Today the guy seems more interested in selling online muzak than selling less-than-$2000 computers. iMac's and eMac 's used to be nice
He's selling music to sell iPods! There's no money in selling music online.
As for your comment about $2000 computers, Apple currently has 5 product lines, and a total of 16 "stock" machines within those lines. Of those 16, *5* are over $2,000 (7 if you count the ones at $1,999).
Only ONE consumer-based product is over $2,000: the 20" iMac. ALL iBooks and eMacs are under $1,500. Hell the eMacs START AT $800.

God, I wondered what happened to CNET. it used to be fairly decent, kinda like TechTV for Radio (but not *that* good). But I started hearing David Lawrence NON-STOP, I wondered what the hell had happened.
What the hell is the point of a station devoted solely to a 3-hour loop of a single show? The *least* they could do is re-broadcast TechTV the same way they're doing Headline News.
Now *THAT* would kick ass.
It's not meant to replace your CDs and CD player. it's meant to replace AM/FM radio. With CDs, you can choose what music to listen to. With radio, you leave that up to the DJ. The advantages of satellite radio of AM/FM is that it's a cleaner signal, there's much more selection, and YES, it's uncensored! It's BETTER than AM/FM, but it's never meant to be a substitute for CDs.
After I graduated from school about two years ago, I took most of my graduation gift money and decked out a stereo in my car. (No, you can't hear it 4 miles away, it's conservative, but definitely "full range")
One of the options I chose to add was XM Radio. I wasn't happy with the way Sirius was panning out (back then they didn't even have coast-to-coast) and XM was $10/mo as opposed to Sirius's $13/mo.
I got some of the first XM equipment from Pioneer, including a head unit, reciever and antenna. None of that FM modulator crap. I set it all up, activated the account, and i've been happy ever since.
All of the channels are great, depending on what you want to listen to. I never knew 10 different genres of rock existed until XM. Hell, Bluegrass has it's own channel. Some are commercial free, the others have WAY less commercials than regular AM/FM Radio.
Personally, I listen to Top 20, "Ethel" which is 90s alternative, CNN Headline News and the Comedy channel. The Comedy channel is COMPLETELY UNCENSORED. When I say anything goes, I *mean* it. pussy this, fuck that, shit on you, it never ends. It definitely makes the ride to work seem shorter.
Here I am two years later with the same equipment and the same subscription and I'm still paying for it. If you're tired of listening to CDs or AM/FM and just want something else to listen to, XM Radio is definitely the way to go. Car kits are so cheap now that you'd be foolish to pass it up.
Yes, some of the channels (especially the re-broadcasts of CNN, Fox, and other actual radio stations) are censored.
But XM Comedy, Channel 150, is not fucking censored. No fucking way. Fuck Fuck Fuck. You can listen to Richard Pryor describe his love affairs in all it's wonderful detail or listen to Jackie the Joke Man make his sick fucking jokes as much as you want and you'll never hear a bleep.

It seems like these stories have a shelf-life of about three to six months, before it's obsolete due to something newer being on the market.
