OS stays up heck alot of better and Office 2007 is pretty stable. I haven't heard of it crashing at complete random hosing up work. When it does crashes for no reason, it's generally the computer is hosed up with Spyware and Viruses pretty bad. Exchange 2007 is stable and unless you use it in some wierd way that Microsoft doesn't recommend, it stays up most of the time.
So things like car theft, burglary of unoccupied homes, etc... All low priority. Heck, I've heard of burlary rings that don't even care of a house is alarmed - police response time is so slow that they have time to steal everything they want and leave before the police arrive. One was even spoofing the alarm people, delaying things even more.
I have a cop friend who works day and he says the same thing about Alarm systems. They are pretty much worthless except for letting people at home know when their perimeter has been breached. Reason cops don't care about alarms is 4 out of 5 times, it's a false alarm. Kid forgets to shut it off. Dog jumped up at something and set off motion detectors, high wind jiggled loose a door that wasn't properly closed. So unlike the ads ADT shows, cops don't run lights and sirens, they just drive over and check it out at their leisure.
Article isn't clear but they didn't say what version of Windows they put on Internet. If you install slipstreamed XP SP2 or greater, the firewall would be on by default and I imagine time to owned would be much higher then 4 minutes. If you put XP no SP on internet, yea, owned in 4 minutes. Server 2003 SP2 R2 locks down all incoming connections till you say go ahead and open them up after install to let you have time to patch.
As for shipping with patches, they do. All the new Dells at work have been coming with XP SP3 on reinstall CD and there is directions on how to create your own slipstream install CDs. Try googling "XP Slipstream" . Ditto for Windows 2003 Server.
Lastly, they do continue to fix it. Windows Update still has patches for XP as needed. The rate of required patches has slowed down but that's a good thing. They haven't had OMG WE MUST PATCH NOW patch in a while.
No and normal tech could do that anyways. My current job has found kiddie porn on computers and they reported it to local cops which took their statements, went down to magistrate, swore out a warrant and seized the computer. It's no different then you reporting a drug dealers who live your house.
I have a few games in steam. In fact, I played COD4 and TF2 last night. I know, but the flood of packets in terms of bandwidth is very small. It's just alot of little packets that overwhelm NATing tables of most home based routers. My DD-WRT doesn't have problem with it though and Valve is better about throttling it then they used to. If you have a problem, turn down your connection from cable to DSL 1M.
However, in most cases, this traffic is burst. I think real problem ISPs have BitTorrent and such are long sustained downloads that never stop. Gamers and such create large amount of traffic but they are bursts. I play Call of Duty 4 for 2 hours and that's it for the night. I send very little after I go to bed.
Comcast VOIP modem (which all in one phone+Internet modem) comes with battery that will keep VOIP side running for several hours after power outage. If you have old phone which I do, I've used phone in a power outage.
In Exchange 2003 SP2 and above, you can configure the Exchange server to reject email address to nonexistant@example.com during SMTP transaction instead of default behavior of accept mail, figure out no one exists by that address and then send NDR. I've had spammers use Exchange servers to spam people. Here is wiki article how to configure Exchange 2003. I believe Exchange 2007 does it by default.
Email for students in most cases is lost money. If GMail is more then willing to take this cost for them, most universities will be more then willing to offload it. Just because top universities does it, doesn't mean it's good idea.
Frankly, all the information Google collects is just asking to be data mined. They may not do it now but when Shareholders come a knocking and asking why they are making maximum profit, expect "Do not Evil" to go right out the window.
As for Dreamhost wanting people to go to Gmail apps, again, who can blame them? More profit for them.
There is also USB adapter that does the same thing. We use them at work to recovered busted Laptops HDs. Heck most the time instead of doing this trick, we just Windows look into equivlent of/etc/shadow then run password through online LM Hash Database when clients forget to leave us their passwords.
It's not car manufacturers, it's more like taxing someone who spends more time on roads then someone else, which is something we do already with Fuel Taxes and Road taxes against Semis.
I agree with throttling, I just wish they would be upfront about it. If they have bandwidth limit, then state it. If they block certain protocols, say so.
I've known a few that did, more did in C#. Remember, VB.Net and C#.Net can be used in same project and I've known several projects where that was case.
Use a decent SMTP Proxy like ASSP or other commercial systems where if it's marked as spam, the sending SMTP Server is given 5xx notice so if it's legit, user gets a bounceback and if it's spambot, it just disappears.
Wait? Exchange 2003/2007 Recovery Storage Group? Maybe it's time your Exchange got an upgrade.
Since Exchange 2003 SP2 I haven't seen Exchange Database corrupt itself and I deal with servers running 100-200 users on single servers. These servers have had RAID drives fail, Power pulled from them and users do some really idiotic stuff. Databases always came back ok.
You could have really nice LInux server for Exchange money, but you would also have something with a bunch of half baked software that didn't have nice Desktop Client, didn't support your blackberry like it should and is asking to break when you update one piece of software.
I'm not really sure how he's turning in his whatever since UNData is written in ASP.Net 2 powered by Windows 2003. He's probably laughing all the way to bank though.
I agree that it's a bad idea because parents may not realize it's in use and it cause problems to their kids when shopping.
However, this device was probably created out frustration with unable to solve teens hanging around with another method. I haven't seen these in US nor heard about them in local papers so I have to assume it's due UK general lack of ability to deal with hoodlums. At least in US we have pretty strong loitering/trespassing laws. Yes, teens hanging around can be problem depending on type of teens. If it's group of teens that look like a bunch of punks that are swearing, smoking and looking all "tough" then it will bother other customers with money. We have same problem in my local area. There are several 7-11s (quick stop) type places that have people hanging around looking for work. Most of these people are presumed illegal aliens of Central American type descent who do not speak english and whistle at women. Guess where my girlfriend WILL refuse to shop?
That's fine, British have made a decision to ban all guns and put irrational faith in their government. However, your chances of getting a gun held to side of your head go up every year.
Not to mention that aren't as effective as movies or TV Shows make them out to be. A good background investigation can generally find out alot more but background investigations are much more expensive and take up more time so now the polygraph is used to discover where a background should start.
As they should. 587/TCP Port has been set up for SMTP Submission which is open on Comcast network. Port 25 is basically now reserved for Server to Server transmission.
Scientific journals are extremely expensive to subscribe to. Universities are paying journals where they provide access to all the students a stupid amount of money.

It does but it's a bitch to setup and deal with. Windows server does have DNS server that's quite easy to setup and use.
I believe if buy XP, it will be SP2 or 3 now. Not really sure. I don't buy whole system for myself but at work, they are Dell Desktop shop.

Many email servers will ban IPs that attempt dictionary attacks. I know mine does. Dictionary attacks are pretty rare these days though.

Shotgun can take care of determined malicious threat without having to flee from own house type thing.

Can I get some of tinfoil your using? It sounds like some pretty strong stuff.
