By default, Office Communicator 2005 will allow you to search for contacts out of whatever address book Outlook 2003 is using. This is usually based off of the Exchange GAL. However, there is a very rigged way to force update user's Communicator contact lists. There is a lot of information about doing this in the development guides here. From my experience, the only reasonable way to manage user's contact lists is to create an initial list of contacts, then every week append a differential list of contacts. There is some way to add in MSN/AIM/Yahoo users, but you have to pay Microsoft a monthly fee, provide them with your domain, and all of that traffic basically goes through some third-party central server.

I'm surprised at how quickly a port was done from Familar Linux to WinCE/WM2003. I have a Dell Axim X5 from a few years back. When extracted, the current version is about 15MB, 9MB going for winembed.exe. From what I've heard, users running WM2003SE have more problems than those you have slightly older devices. It seems like Minimo isn't using any windows mobile or ce.net specific APIs. The top bar is forced to the bottom of the screen, the bottom bar doesn't exist and the input toggle is forced onto the top bar. This caused a conflict with ICBar and will probably cause conflicts with similar ICBar based UI customization programs.

Forms and links don't work yet, but it is almost akward seeing a website rendered just as it would be on a full browser, especially after suffering through Pocket IE.

I have always been of the opinion that BitTorrent and the ed2k network have been designed around very large files such as isos, dvds, and other things larger than bitty mp3 music files. These large files are where the applications really accel. I have often said it easier to get a whole album of songs than just one specific one on such networks. One thing that people often complain about is dialup speed transfers. I have read that this is because of a "low-id" given to most clients who don't have two ports forwarded to the machine. I believe eMule's suggested ports are 4662 and 4672. With a bit of testing I've deteremined that both BT and eMule work better with their respective ports forwarded. I've also always wondered what the Democrats thing of eDonkey.

All of the computers in the magnet program at my school run either Windows 2000 or Windows XP and almost all are Dells(old gx100s are the oldests and the newest are optiplex sx260s in the computer science labs). In the rest of the school which is not as technology focused, made a switch over to a major of Windows 2000 installations from 98 and NT4. There are a few Macs left which are only in operation because of stuborn teachers of course specific applications which have teachers which have yet to find a Windows alternative. There is a SUSE box which I use for "security evaluation"...I think that's what we're calling it. As for the servers, again, all Windows of course (half server 2000 and half server 2003).

Every year some rather unthoughtful teacher suggests moving my school over to block scheduling. Every single year it fails, primarily of the advanced classes offered at my school, especially the AP classes. I don't see a problem with making AP CS A a semester long course at the end of the year so long as the school offers an intro. level computer programming course. My school is still on a 7 period schedule. Freshman year all students in my magnet program are required to take a basic computer class that goes over the basics of things like excel and access and a bit of html and basic programming. Sophomore year the students are required to take a full year of programming, half a semester of c++ and half a semester of java. Junior year students can choose between taking A, AB, or a slower paced programming class for those who simply aren't into programming or lack the ability. I think that setup works well for my program but for most schools just making an intro programming course a requirement for entering AP CS would make the A class work fine. Well besides any of that, CS A is supposed to mimic a single semester class anyways.

I am currently a junior in florida. Last year I was the only sophomore to take the AP CS A test. Of course I found that test really easy. This year's AB test took me most of the time to complete. I finished the multiple choice in 45 minutes and then went back over it and checked a couple things a few dozen times. Overall the exam wasn't so bad. There are lot of people in my class who didn't come close to finishing the exam but that is mainly because of the teacher of the class.
