Aww, poor Intel. It looks like their stranglehold on the industry might be in danger.
I've always been a supporter of AMD, back when I got my first K6 chip. Why? Because I could afford it.. I have absolutely no sympathy for Intel, they're as bad if not worse then microsoft when it comes to scummy business tactics.
You do not need to spend hundreds of dollars on a processor - it's only one component in your system in the first place. I paid a whopping $100 for my 3000xp chip, a comperable intel chip would've cost me twice as much, at least. Competition is supposed to drive prices down, and if anything I've seen a steady increase in the price of intel chips over the years.
I don't know why firingsquad decided to cheese out and recommend an LCD, it's as important as the rest of the stuff they're suggesting they would buy.
IMO, LCD monitors have come a long way but they are not quite where they should be to be able to handle high motion video(games) and color reproduction. I would've suggested a high quality 19-21" CRT for the ultimate gaming rig.
After posting an ask slashdot about gaming LCD monitors, I took a plunge and bought one. I took my 17" DVI Samsung 710T back after realizing the flaws with the technology while trying it out for a days straight. It may look great in the store but give it a solid night of gaming / computing and you'll see all kinds of shit go wrong on the screen.
If you're in the city, even getting to where you need to go is a hassle. I wouldn't wish the commute around this time of year on anyone - it's horrible. Couple that with the weather and you're looking at one hot crowded journey no matter where you go.
After seeing some of the less than enthusiastic comments about NextFest, it doesn't sound like the effort in getting to it would really pay off. There are other places to go to in the city all year round to get your geek fix anyways.
Once you hear the leader ask for calculation for a chance of survival, it completely shits on the whole video/skit - otherwise the rest is completely plausible and funny.
There's a fine line between humor & total crap, and I believe that single line about survival crossed it. Luckily the 2 things that Leeroy says manages to save it from being tossed in to the black hole of really bad WoW player movies which are all over the internet.
I live in a light polluted town (Aurora, IL) so I barely get to see anything besides an ominous orange glow in the sky at night.
But these past few nights I've just been sitting out watching the moon for a few hours at a time, and it really is something to look at if you haven't done so already. I know late night is prime geek computing time, but go outside for 5 minutes and check it out.
You would be hard pressed to find a manufacturer with a 'go ahead and play' policy on the hardware. I don't understand this at all, history has shown that software which has been open to developers has more staying power and versatility.
Why is this such a huge problem for Sony? They would still sell the fucking things for people to tinker with / modify them, why not bother to release a dev kit or SOMETHING for us geeks to play with?
A good parallel to this is the Xbox, do you know how many people I know bought one for the sole purpose of modifying them? Lots. I understand Microsoft still took a bite on the sale of the console, but not on the fact that these people still :
1) Bought games (secondhand or otherwise)
2) Bought accessories
3) Spent money they otherwise wouldn't have if they didnt own an Xbox.
Does Sony not realize that catering to the geek crowd could actually bolster sales and help with software development for the PSP? I guess not, and I hate to say it, but I have a feeling this portable is going to go the way of the Minidisc - another complete & total failure by Sony to actually let consumers use devices the way they see fit.
WoW seems to be the standard now for any MMO on the planet, it came & conqured over 2 million subscriptions around the world, thats pretty impressive for any title let alone a MMORPG.
It's pretty hard to compete with Blizzard, but now would be a great time because the users are wanting more and Blizz just can't keep the pace - they're starting to run up hill and it shows. It's too bad MxO's launch was bad, didn't really sell at all, and was based off of a series of movies that was bastardized by the Wachowski brothers at the end.
Now a Sponge Bob MMO - that would sell like hotcakes. Remember me when you're swimming in a pool of money. Thanks.

Followed by the hammering of your desktop full of randomly generated adult website advertisments and emails. Things have gotten so bad with the bots that people are relying on 3rd party programs to block the sheer amount of crap that an average yahoo user receives every day.
I'd honestly say a good 30-40% of the "users" in the rooms are adult website advertisement bots. I've spent a few minutes on this comment and I already received at least a dozen bogus IM's / ads from them. The news about companies not wanting to deal with yahoo's obvious chat room problems doesn't suprise me in the least, I say good riddance.
Playing a first person shooter with a joystick is analogous to driving a car with your buttcheeks.
I've played PC games for over half my life and I still can't grasp controlling a FPS on a console. I'm sure any awards that were given out were well deserved.
There's also nothing stopping the editors from deleting such crap. The ASCII pics and GNAA posts are easily seen at a glance, and it'd be trivial to produce a private interface that had a "delete this shite" button against each comment (or checkbox and single "Delete the shite" button, or whatever)
Well yeah, but I don't think slashdot would spring for the resources to check every single comment for a troll just because they've allowed all connections. It would be trivial to do so.
It is hypocritical of them to block a lot of the users. I'm assuming somewhere along the line they weighed the amount of decent posts versus trolls, and acted accordingly. It really is a shame, but I can't think of a feasible solution to the problem.
You've mentioned a few reasons for people wanting to view slashdot using Tor, but I suppose in the editors eyes, trolls > legit users. It boils down to how much intervention they choose to do in regards to the comments on here, versus tossing a blanket 'fuck you' to everyone using Tor.
It's the same with any other internet service - give it a few days, and watch the abuse roll on in. Web, Email, Chat, they can ALL be used for great things but the perpensity for abuse lurks just around the corner, and Tor isn't an exception to this.
If they allowed 100% of the Tor connections, the comments would be flooded with more ascii goatse pics, GNAA Postings, tubgirl links, and all kinds of wonderful trollish crap. It already is bad to a certain degree, and that's with a publicly moderated rating system and IP filtering already in place.
I'm all for internet anonymity and free speech, but there are very few reasons why someone would need to visit the slashdot comments section with a proxy.
Uhh, no. The first terminator was looking for sarah conner. The second, which looked like liquid metal, was actually looking for both John & Sarah when it went back in time.
This IS news for nerds, you knew that right? Sorry to nitpick, but I figured you may know why the mods deemed this funny.
Accountability is the only thing that will stop spam.
Yeah it is. So, I'm holding you accountable for that lame, unwanted, advertisement in your slashsig. Get a job, or something you can do to make the few hundred it takes to buy a minimac.
How many people have you emailed or bothered with that lame "free stuff" link?
I remember iCE.. when I was begging for my board to be a distro in the Chicago area at the tender age of 13. RaDMaN from ACiD occasionally reads the slash - and as I understand it, ACiD is still an art group to this very day. I'm glad to see iCE is still around as well.
You should probably add some commentary in to that article, otherwise it's just a bunch of graphs.
I'm not amazed at the results - the 6800 ultra seems to spank everything else. Probably because it's $400, sucks 1.21 gigawatts of power, and is the size of a carton of cigarettes.
Nice site, I'll bookmark it only if you promise to add some humanity to it.
There are some very good points that the Linux community could adopt. An example is end-user training videos such as how to use a mouse.
Maybe that should have been along the lines of - "end-user training videos dissecting fundamental computer use" or something..
Perhaps the submitter was tryin to throw the ol 'wink wink nudge nudge' to the OSS community, explaining that someone may be using linux without prior windows / computer experience?
I don't know, it was a strange comment in the first place..
Semi-on topic, but I'd like to see a study done regarding type-R ricer kids who believe because they can drift in Gran Turismo, they're gods gift to the road..
All too often I see car forum posts which claim (insert non realistic driving game here) time saved them from skidding out @ 80mph in a residential neighborhood.
Makes me wish we did IQ testing for licenses here in my state.
As a Comcast user for about a year now, I've had my fair share of problems with the service. Most notably :
1) DMCA letters
2) Outages at exactly the same time every night
3) Prompt, yet horrible, customer service
I expect VoIP from the same company to be on par, if not worse, than their cable service. If I could afford a decent DSL package that offered me 3mb/sec I'd do it. I have a feeling a lot of people use Comcast because they have no other HSI choice in their area, which is really sad.
The market is just begging for competition right now, and companies just can't dole out the cash to provide & maintain a competent, COMPETITIVE residental high speed network.
The only other option I have (greater chicagoland area) is SBC - which is about 1/3rd of the bandwidth Comcast offers for the same price. Looks like I either have to move, or stick with Comcrap for the rest of my suburban life.

The download from nasa.gov worked great for me, that sweet taxpayer bandwidth helped me mooch it at almost 500KB/sec.

Two thumbs up for L337 TheDraw skills.
I'm no troll, check my profile, but this is pretty much right on the money.
I come to slashdot for news, not some wannabe journalist with some kind of slanted personal agenda.
I would mod you up if I had the points. This guy michael is a complete douchebag.
Thanks.

Google = best & brightest, right?
I mean, their aptitude tests & hiring policies makes me believe they've got a few nobel prize winners working there..
Shouldn't they be able to fix this during lunch break?

And what are they going to do if they see damage, tell the crew to jump out?
Hey, it's a lot better than what they currently have: study the wreckage and find out when they should've told them to abort.
