Actually, I put the wrong equality sign in that post.
I've been here long enough to know that when it comes down to natural disaster aid, or file trading, we pick the latter. I suppose if I had been posting on SRILANKA.ORG or something, the attitude would be the exact opposite.
There's a fine line between funny and completely retarded, and apparently I have crossed it.
It's not so much as 'every piece of windows software has malware/adware' it's just that the end users DO NOT BOTHER TO READ ANYTHING WHILE INSTALLING SOFTWARE!
Has anyone else noticed that programs nowadays come with more strict rules about users reading the EULA? I think software developers are trying to get a bigger message out : read it before you install it.
I mean, the same people that install this stuff wouldn't read a legally binding contract before signing it, if their life depended on it. They need to get out of these lazy mannerisms and put some actual thought in to what they click / sign on.
3 minutes of reading can save you more than you think.
Honestly, I wouldn't wish the MD player on anyone, let alone some poor unsuspecting fool on ebay. I did get some use out of it, but got caught up in the hype when they first came out.
After the casing starting coming apart, the buttons started to recess in to the unit, I just figured it wasn't worth my time to even toss it on ebay, and threw it out. The draconian copy protection was just the icing on the cake.
Now that we've got everyone talking about battery life of the PSP - what about DRM? I threw my MiniDisc player in the garbage, after the headaches I had to endure with the software / copy protection.
I'm not trolling, one of the selling points of the PSP is the fact that you can load up all kinds of user created content on it.
I'd hate to purchase one just to find out that I have to do it Sony's way, or no way. I really don't want to make another one of those expensive mistakes.
Is seven different 8 character passwords (with numbers and mixed cases) really too much to ask?
For the average Joe User at his cubicle, Yes.
The Ubergeek will be able to memorize all of them, front to back. Joe User from the advertising department, cannot. Just because you successully memorized 80,000 different acronyms / alphanumeric passwords doesn't mean everyone else can.
Not everyone has a rock solid memory like most IT people do. I believe that's pretty much 95% of why most of us are employed. - not for our stunning good looks, but because we can remember stuff better than other people. Joe user still may be having difficulty memorizing the steps it takes to check his email. Add a password consisting of "$5i5k3LKmb0j" to the equation, and you have a problem on your hands.
I'm not trying to flame this guy, but he really needs to understand how the brain works, and the sheer amount of things regular users have to remember on a daily basis. It can get a little overwhelming some times.
I'm not sure who is going to give sn.org/lt.com any sympathy over this, they are just glorified warez sites, after all.
Although this DoS does highlight the largest problem with BitTorrent - it still relies on a central(tracker) server to operate.
I believe it's that specific "function" of BT that got me one of those nifty letters in the mail. I can't see any kind of a workable solution to this problem, everything that has to do with file trading has an entry point somewhere along the line.
Well, they're trying to fix that by incorporating PvP raid elements in to the quests. If you read this interview with the WoW quest designer, he explains how they tweaked the system due to user feedback. They cut down the amount of collection quests, and are trying for the "long haul" approach to questing.
I was in the beta test, and I took my undead mage to level 25.. Awesome game, but I believe the $15/month is too excessive. I understand what you're saying tho, but I think with the Blizzard fan base, and the stylistic approach they use, it's gonna make money no matter what.
Rumor has it, it's happening on Vampire: The Masquerade as well. That's another Havok powered game developed by a company that licensed the tech from Valve. The bug also occurs when I play Half life:Source.
that should read : uses the same engine that HL2 does. Valve didn't develop the havok physics, their game just happens to use it. and -1 flamebait? come on! i'm just trying to defend my position here.
Every other thread in this article has "yeah, it's happened to me" or "no, it hasn't happened to me". I wanted an honest opinion from some of the gamers here on slashdot about their experiences with the game.
The stuttering is obviously a problem, and detracts from the whole HL2 experience. I'm not trolling with this story, I'm trying to get the word out to some customers who may be flaming mad because of this, on top of having steam activation problems.
Rumor has it, it's happening on Vampire: The Masquerade as well. That's another Havok powered game developed by a company that licensed the tech from Valve. The bug also occurs when I play Half life:Source.
I wanted to know how many other people it's affecting. I'm not holding a gun to your head to read this story. Doesn't seem like it's sporadic any more tho, perhaps I should've re-worded the submitted article. Oh well, I got my point across - this is an issue, and it needs to be resolved.
I didn't post this specifically to the main area, It had originally been intended for the GAMING section of the site. There are people that care about this stuff, you know. If you don't like it, go to your preferences, and filter out the gaming news.
Perhaps you'd like a little whine with your cheese?
This is great news & all - except for no. There have been *NUMEROUS* complaints regarding performance in the game. If you can get it to not crash to your desktop, the audio lag / stuttering makes it almost unplayable.
Normally, I wouldn't bitch about speed when it comes to linux ports. Typically the games run a little bit faster, (I have no idea how this works, kudos to the WINE monkeys that have engineered it) but we're talking about serious lag in HL2 on uber fast GF6800U / AMD64 systems.
I believe ValVe still needs to PATCH the game, before transgaming starts porting it. Who wants to port a broken piece of sofwtare? I have HL2, pre-loaded for two months, and I'm telling you now that it's still riddled with bugs. Mine runs okay on XP2100 / GF4 ti4200 / 512mb PC2100 DDR.
When I say "okay", I mean it's playable, but that's about it. I'm down for linux gaming, but I don't think you guys want to touch this game until it's fixed.
It seems Nvidia has been pushing their PCI-E cards, which haven't really found any foothold in the market. Who wants to buy a new motherboard for a few extra frames per second?
If you want performance without paying $400+ for something like the 6800/x800, the 6600 is for you. This is the card us cheap-thrill monkeys have been drooling over. The only bad thing I can say about this card, is that it hasn't come out sooner - Half Life 2 is running mighty poorly on my Ti4200.
Nvidia really would've cleaned up had they released this prior to HL2 release.
The best Star Wars games to date? Next to X-Wing/TIE Fighter, would have to be Knights of the Old Republic. If you're a fan.. you should check out the sequel. I'm sure this will be kicking some ass once it is released.
EQ2 only took almost 6 years to be released after the original - way too long, imo. I hear it isn't ready, and they rushed it to compete with WoW. Sony is probably nervous.. and for a good reason.
Blizzard is poised to win big with this game. They've had HUGE success with Warcraft, an extensive fanbase, and the MMO really does immerse you. I was part of the limited beta(s) and it's been quite a trip.
The graphical stylings of WoW (and the sheer attention to detail) really make it a contender. Sorry to come across sounding like a fanboy, I probably won't play due to the fact that i'm broke and i've got other things on my plate. But if I had the time & money, i'd be on my troll shaman right now.
I urge any MMO fan to give Blizzard's new project a shot, it's worth your cash. Oh, and play on Sargeras, cause I said so.
Done what, exactly? Anybody who was reading the developer blog regarding the original Halo was completely disappointed by the time it hit the shelves. Bungie hyped it up to be something it wasn't, and by the time it got released, 95% of the "innovative, ground breaking" features were found in other pc/console games. The only thing that made it unique was that it was on the Xbox.
How long did we have to wait for a PC port for this one? 2 years?
I've played Halo 2, and controlling the game is like watching a monkey fuck a football. Sure, it's amusing, and interesting for the first minute, then it becomes frustrating and pointless. Although the graphics are awesome, and the gameplay is superb.
It's a good game, but really.. it should be on the PC where 99% of first person shooters belong. The controls really do detract from the experience. Bungie will get my money if I see a holiday release for a PC port.
The controllers weared out fast (OK, I played way too much Xevious) and if the tabs that were build into a 7800 cartridge to allow the added contacts to connect broke, you just downgraded to a 2600. I also curse the backwards compatiblity, since that was the reason I got a 7800 instead of a Nintendo at the time (that and it was $40 bucks cheaper). I've heard these consoles where just dumped on the marked to cash in on the resurge, and it showed.
At first I thought you had confused the 7800/5200, but then I saw the compatibility comment.
I believe the 5200 not the 7800, was the system with shoddy controllers. I grew up in the 80's, but I specifically remember not getting one because my parents had heard of the crappy quality of the systems. It's not like the 7800 was any better, but everyone bought those anyways because it played all the older 2600 games.
"Does this point the way of the future for other weeds?"
IANAH(I am not a horticulturist), but people who grow another illegal plant already use selective breeding for specific purposes. Usually it's for appearence, taste, high, growing conditions. I haven't heard of a herbicide resistant maryjane, but this isn't exactly a new thing.
You know, you'll probably never read this.. but I'm the one who submitted the question, and I feel the need to answer this, just because this is really the only negative comment I've read..
LCD monitors are an extremely subjective technology. I believe, they look different to everyone. I hear a lot of speculation about them, I also see a lot of misguided information, and flat out lies on some hardware / manufacturer sites about them. There really isn't a legitimate benchmark when it comes to LCD's.
I have a fairly decent samsung 955SL CRT. It hasn't given me any problems, per say. Although, I just want something better. I'm by no means rich, this isn't some lame attempt by a fanboy gamer to get my story on slashdot.
I've also found price difference between retail & internet stores to be *HUGE*. A display locally could be selling for $500, where on NewEgg it's going for $350. Obviously I'm buying off the internet, so I'm putting my faith in to reviews, opinions & specifications which seemingly always have discrepencies in them. So more than likely, I won't be able to actually try this LCD out before I buy it.
This is, to me, a vital system upgrade. It's just difficult to choose with the 80,000 different, manufacturers, specs, and everything else. What a better way to get an opinion / review on something than to get it on slashdot? I'm not selling anything, I'm asking for an honest geeks advice to help another gamer geek out. Sorry if you took it the wrong way.
Man, you are higher than I am if you mod that post insightful, it most certainly wasn't a troll, but the equality sign throws the whole thing off.
:P.
Spend your points on someone who doesn't accidentally hit the submit button so quickly

This is Slashdot, my man.
Saving lives > File trading.

No, No you weren't. I actually got disappointed when I re-read it.

Nothing to see here, folks. It's just the name of Google's service that the ACS is complaining about, not the functionality or content.
CAS (a division of the ACS - go figure) sells their SciFinder Scholar product, so they're just protecting their money maker.
Perhaps Google should have searched for "scholar" before they decided to name their new progeny? It is the 8th result in the search, after all.

Couldn't be more right on the money.. Hijackthis along with Lavasoft's AdAware, will uncover 99.999% of the crap out there.
I mention AdAware because Hijackthis lacks any sort of a file checksum/scanning utility. If it did, It would be the best catch-all solution.
university helpdesk does not equate to passing out linux and telling the end users to piss off.

I'm confused. When did Bungie hire Peter Molyneux and when did he start making FPS games?
Haha.. great point. He's done the same shit bungie has, when they all talk about all the features. Advanced AI, Physics, Vehicles, etc.
It turns out, by the time it hit the PC (where, imo, you get these new innovative features that trickle down to the console) it was worthless!
Halo 2 = Dual wielding, New Textures, New maps. Nothing to see here folks.
