Is software at the point in it's evolution that any major changes only happen when there is a lawsuit involved? This is not only a microsoft phenomenon but I am starting to see it in all new software.
WHEN DID THE DAMN LAWYERS START DICTATING WHAT THE SOFTWARE SHOULD DO ????
If GNU was not around to prove that software does not have to be created by committee this world would be a lot worse place than it is now. IMHO the open source community is becoming more than just about software and more about what is wrong with society as a whole.
All of the posts seem centered on the fact that people died. Yes they did.
People die. When they die in such a worthy endeavor they become heroes. People have been dying this way for a long time (centuries in fact).
How will you die? The majority of/.ers will die and not be even heard about. These people die as heroes and published in the national press with parades in their hometowns. I can only hope to be celebrated in death so well.
Reality is that these people achieved greatness in the risk that they took to bring society ahead in terms of space exploration and thinking. They should be celebrated. They should be held up for all to see. I see it as unfair to stop or hinder the program that afforded them the possibility to become the pioneers that they are.
The discussion of details should be discussed, of course. The resoning that the research should be stopped based upon the fact that people (pioneers) died is against the philosophy of the fallen heroes.
P.S. - Wow - maybe too much eggnog
Well, this has got to be one of the easiest to implement ideas. Don't know why it hasn't been thought of before. The towers are already there. Use optical lines so there is no problem with interference. String a line along an existing tower, that is surely going to a place that uses power and would gladly use any excess bandwith which in turn could recover the costs of setting up the monitoring equipment.
Well... - any ideas on where to find more data on FEMA. I think I heard some nasty stuff years ago but I believe they fell out of the spolight, maybe intentionally.
Without looking into this too deeply, I believed that this was a great idea that only needed the proper amount of time to develop. Once again, it looks like I'm wrong. **** Look of astonishment on faces of all readers ****
It's hard to have much sympathy, even though this is a dirty trick played by some h@xtor D00d that has nothing better to do with his time. The only way to beat a scurrilous bunch of deadbeats like SCO is to show to the public the kind of people they really are. Attacking them in this way only makes the Open-Source people look like a bunch of teenage kids that want to take on "The Man".
Is this the right site?

Should Slashdot be covering books that are considered "novice books" for windows. I thought the concept here is to discuss a little deeper issues. I can get this same review from "Better Homes and Gardens"
That is a fine and good attitude but if the problem isn't sorted out before it goes live, there may be problems. If you notice the posts about "spamholers" (whoo-hoo new word!) getting cut off by their ISP, you have to think that letting this loose to joe public may get them cut off and cause havoc on the internet as a whole. I am confident that a solution that is easy and will work is out there. The way to find that solution is to discuss and debate. The people that shoot down current solutions are not the problem - the problem is the problem.
I don't think the point is the amount of cash, it was the position that he was in. If he was greedy, he could have gotten away with a lot more. If you are put in the position he was in then you should be punished to the full extent. This is not a case of stealing a candy bar but a knowing effort to write a script and involve other people in the conspiracy. I think he got off easy.
This is the same supreme court that ruled that Canadians can't get American satellite signals even when willing to pay for them. We are forced to only view Canadian content even when we are willing to go to extremes and set up an american PO box and pay american dollars. This is not a resonably thinking court. Don't think for a second that the right thing will be done here. I wouldn't be surprised if they came down with a ruling that decided that Candaians couldn't download any foreign music and if they did you must pay a levy. They will make a ruling that has no way of being enforced and spend millions trying to enforce it.
Rational thinking has nothing to do with it!!!!
I think you are missing the point regarding the cd's being sent. Nobody is sending out cd's - it is just the threat of sending them that scares the end user.
He says that he has trouble printing it out. Sorry but as aprinter I find that hard to believe. He could send the file (on DVD) to any large format output shop near him and get it output. Let's see 40,784 x 26,800 pixels printed at 300dpi is ~ 136 x 90 inches. If he wants it to be better resolution at 600dpi (which just about every modern large format printer runs at) he would be 68 x 45 inches.
This is interesting from the digital perspective but not from the traditional printing perspective. Putting a 2 gig file through a RIP is a pain in the ass but is still done on a regular basis at print shops in any town.
Has anyone ever seen a billboard by any chance????
Exactly what planet are you from anyway? This is not a philosophical question, it is reality. The idea is for all people to have less taxes and more money to spend in the open market. Did someone give you that computer that you are using or did you have to pay for it like the rest of the world?
I guess if you had a specific set of people that called each other - Uncle Bob in Texas calls Aunt Jane in Istanbul everyday. The problem I see is that you can't usually predict who you will call at any specific time. In business you do not want to set up a whole system to call a customer - you just want to pick up the phone and call him, figure out the cost after the fact. The underlying problem I see is that you have to get everyone to move to VOIP at the same time. Not impossible, but certainly out of my ability.
As a Canadian, I am fully willing to set up a VOIP box in my basement at a very minimal cost to the overtaxed Americans. I am sure that it will run for at least a month before our overbearing and tax hungry government will start to tax the hell out of me too.
Does this mean that all webcams will have to be pointed at a lower level and toward the garden.
Gnomemeeting...
Get it...
Ok I'll get back to work.....
In the future a concept labeled the/. effect will become a major problem that will plague sysadmins everywhere. This effect will also be a major pain in the ass for people that will be known as the/. minions. By the year 2004, the/. minions will rise up and start attacking random servers in all parts of the planet with shovels. This will be known as the slashback effect.
to the winodows hole found the other day. Has anybody heard if that was fixed yet(not sure if it has been 48 hours yet). Technically this hole was fixed before it was found. It looks like another win for open source.
Now that's a troll. The memory problems are what cause most of my problems. Albeit usually caused by bad software, ie Corel, Office, Outlook. I can make Outlook crash at will from a web page mail link without opening Outlook first. I will be the first one to say that it is more stable then 98, but don't push the limit by saying that it won't crash at least once a day. Tough for me to take you seriously with my unix box beside it going on 6 months uptime (had to reboot to install a UPS because of paranoia).

Just googled SCO and the top of the list is sco.com.
I guess it would be funny if it was actually true.

How do people have this much free time? Not only the effort into the site but the fact that other people have actually found it !!!
Obvious Simpson quote: DOH!!

I think it's like a short man's syndrome. We are beside the states, so we have to be a little different even if it doesn't make sense all the time.

Key point here is "If there is any logic in the Canadian supreme court" - being from Canada this is a very large "IF".
