First off, this is insanity at a new level. 30 seconds to start your car?!?!! The real point is the argument for drunk driving. Now don't get all up in arms hear but listen first. In the US you are innocent until proven guilty. This is one of the first laws that convict a person before he has committed any wrongdoing. I am all for throwing the book at somebody who has maimed or killed another after getting behind the wheel, but when that person has not harmed another and we presume he will that is being guilty before any crime has been committed. If I hold a knife while drunk, does that mean I should be liable for stabbing an innocent bystander before the crime has been committed? Constitution? Liberty? Freedom? They are all thrown out the window in the fight against that evildoer known as the drunk driver. I should note that I do not drive after drinking, not because of the law but because I am a responsible person who believes I should be responsible for my own actions.
Any company in this day and age that can consider itself solvent has to be doing something right. You may not agree with the tactics but the end result of being debt free is quite an accomplishment. Now if only the rest of us could say the same !!!!
Could this be a type of viral OSS marketing? OSS is not going to have any marketing by definition, but this could be the way that it makes serious inroads into the mindshare. Be first, Be best, let the others play catchup. Sort of a perfect world MS approach.
I see this is good news in that there is going to be an ongoing stream of exploits in Windows. This is good news. Think of all of the boxes that will be broken in the next few months.
I should mention that I make a living fixing Windows boxes. I also fix Mac and Linux - but there isn't really much money in fixing them.
How many typos can you possibly have in one comment? This may be a very intelligent comment but it is lost because most people will not read it for what it is but try to understand it through the typos. Not saying you have to spellcheck, but at least take a look at what you are typing.
Why does Canada have to imitate the U.S. in all things? It would be nice to have our government to take a stand against the oppressive RIAA and stop this litigation before it gets going too far. The Canadian people do not want Big Brother to be accusing and convicting the 12 year old swappers like the U.S.
This is the coming of consumer products that have less to do with the tech and more to do with the marketing. Does this mean that laptops are now becoming fashion accesories more than tools? I also wonder if this is a bad thing or a good thing?

I would like to take this opportunity to request you to please spend the rest of the week responding to the rest of the/. dicks with no sense of humour. You have that special gift of getting to the point and having a good insult thrown in for good measure.
You don't think that is a stretch. Come on. You want a moire - print anything that is in 4-colour (magazine for example). You want to teach students about optics by counterfiting a dollar bill !?!!
I meant that any instance of copying currency is illegal, period. Even if you think you have a legit use, it is still illegal unless you are the government. There was a guy in Toronto that used fake cash for a movie that was busted and had to take a full page ad in a printing trade magazine explaining how there are no times when it is legal even though his bills were obviously fake. You are able to print it if the bills are double in size or half the size (I think those were the specs).
This is an issue for graphic arts people. Making a proof for a customer on a machine that is not in register is not acceptable. I assume the high-end models will not have this in it(?). This could easily by gotten around by playing with the layout anyway. If a proofing printer is going to make me go through hoops to use it with good registration, I will not purchase it. There are many other printers on the market. Somebody putting the effort forth to break this "safeguard" will, those who just want to use this as a production machine will not want to go through the hassle and simply replace it with a non-disabled manufacturer.
Through personal experience I have 2 CDRom burners that I cannot get to run without paying for drivers for XP. This is hardware that was sold - not software. They have stopped supporting hardware unless they are paid (no download). This trend has spread to Umax scanners as well (no updated drivers without paying for CD). This frustration has resulted in a personal boycat of anything HP. It may not be much, but it's all I have.
IMHO all spyware should be treated as a virus. It has all of the same symptoms, if not more than a regular run of the mill virus. It tries to infect people by tricking them, sneaks onto a box unknowingly and sends unauthorized data. When people start thinking of spyware as a virus, it will be treated as such.
Is this Open Source thing catching on? I have no idea where this is heading but this is surely a writer that is looking forward instead of backwards. I'm not sure Cory Doctorow knows what this will bring but is willing to take a chance - just as a visionary is supposed to.
Is this the new revolution? Open Source code, Open Source books, the free flow of ideas and art throughout society.
The revolution has started and it's free.
Our society as a whole is allowing this infringment upon us. There is nobody to blame but ourselves. This attack on our freedom is pushed by the people that scream "what about the children" in attempts to save us from ourselves. If there was a big enough uproar about this happening it could be stopped, but unfortunately anybody that stands up to this is shouted down with threats of wanting to aid terrorists and kill babies and such. The old adage comes to mind, the way for evil to prosper is for good men to do nothing.
I am curious to see if there will ever be a call to arms from the freedom loving americans that fund the government that creates these programs.
Please don't lump the junk mail industry in with the spam industry. Junk mail is paid in whole by the company sending it out. The cost is expensive and by definition they are naturally encouraged to trim their list to only send to actual purcasers. This is the exact opposite of spam where the cost is pushed to the consumers side. You may not like junk mail but you did not pay for it and it is a relatively small inconvenience to dump if you don't want it. The idea is that if nobody buys anything with a mailing, the sender has lost actual money. The more volume sent - the higher the cost - hence the higher the risk. The exact opposite of spam.
I think your theory is perfect except for the fact that we are dealing with a monopoly in a commodity that can be easily replicated with very little effort (software). The quota will simply ensure pirate behavior (underground economy). I'm not sure of the answer except that with the monopoly also controlling the advertising and the mindset it is only a matter of time before the the tariffs and quota's will be lifted with public pressure. Unfortunately the only way to stem the tide would be with a competitor with as much clout and penetration to offer an alternative.
Why do they simply give them a fine? This is behavior that deserves more than just paying a fine. MS has no trouble coming up with cash. If a few top level execs got thrown into jail it may make a bit of difference.
Reminds me of the joke of only having to shoot one politician and the rest tend to fall into line.
This is a new week so that would mean that we must now form brand new opinions of our "enemies." Wasn't DirectTV the company that was suing all of the "pirates" that purchased any form of Smartcard reader? The individual that has the responsibility of what to post and therefore the individual that decides what corporation gets lambasted, is now inquiring about a possible business relation with the same corporation.

I for one welcome our new Simpson overlords. It's about time that this comment was actually used in context.

The problem is the defensive drivers out there. You can't have a good defense without a good offense. That's where I come in.
Legitimate, educational and illegal.
You don't think that is a stretch. Come on. You want a moire - print anything that is in 4-colour (magazine for example). You want to teach students about optics by counterfiting a dollar bill !?!!

There is no "legit" reason to copy money. Any copying of currency at the exact size (twice as large is ok - I think) is a felony.

How about a little "Practice what you Preach"
I have very little patience for hypocrites.
