Your (salty) sweat could react with the body armor and possibly make it less effective.

Your rhetorical question may not have such an obvious answer as one might think. Is configuring a computer really the best use of your time?

I rather spend time running a business/empire/enterprise than configuring a computer. It is a better use of time. Granted, a system admin might come along with a new program or technique that will change the industry and make him rich, but what is the chance of that happening? Me thinks you would stand a better chance playing the stock market: just short SCOX- ;0)

I understand what you mean, though. Writing open source code makes you a better programmer. Better programmers write better code. Better code makes more money and allows you to understand both your customer and the computer better. I'll admit I'm some what of a DIY'er, but its just a hobby and like most hobbys, it usually doesn't make one a millionaire or monarch in the bigger society outside of slashdot. That doesnt mean being famous on slashdot wouldn't be pretty cool. However, it might also mean you will get subpoenaed.

  16. Business Philosophy on Microsoft Looks At Other Search Engines · · Score: 3, Interesting

Most businesses in today's market are trying to retract into their core product. Microsoft is doing the opposite and trying to branch out into as many markets as possible(again). IMHO this may not be the best business approach for them.

Sometimes it is better to focus on one thing and make a killing at it. Instead they are making a little profit here, a little profit there.. I guess it keeps the government off your back for being an OS monopoly, though. But do they really think that is a problem as Apple and RedHat stock and market share keep rising?

  17. Re:I can see a good use for this... on More on Talking Shopping Carts · · Score: 1

I was going to post almost this same thought. I spend a lot of time running back and forth in a store. I am not the primary grocery shopper in the store, and by the time I start to get used to it, they change the layout of the store.

Then I got thinking, though. Why do they change the layout? Well, maybe its because of "the center aisle". By going from one end to the other, you pass that middle "special" aisle with the holloween decorations, or gas grill, or what ever. The first time you pass it, you say that looks kind of neat but I'm in a hurry. By the third or fourth time you have given up on the "In & Out" philosophy of most of these stores. You stop and take a look or just throw it in your cart. I think they want you to be lost. It gives the store more of a chance to advertise. The longer you are in their store, the more apt you are to buy more. Most grocery stores around me no longer have plain rows of aisles, but rather kind of a maze like aisle system that does not have an obvious shopper flow. This could be yet another tactic to keep you in the store longer.
