Talking To Computers?

· Score: 1
There is no new revelation about talking to machines, it has been going on since man looked outside of the sacred relationship for some semblance of reasoning about his existence and meaning in life. The Jeopardy 'thing' with IBM was just another step in the direction you can't deny, resistance is futile.
There is the Pinball Hall of Fame conceived and made possible by many donations and the mind/effort of Tim Arnold in Vegas. There is the Neptune Pinball effort in the Pacific Coast region near the Bay in California as well as others like the club in Seattle and Lyons CO. What I'm talking about is coverage as per the original article, not clubs or operations or museums (albeit they bring press, they don't bring the kind of press that goes along with slashdot).
The need to cover Pinball history from Bagatelle in the mid/late 1800s to the integration of the bat/flipper into the modern game of pinball, along with the prohibition and gambling bans it experienced (targeted by so many politicians and mobs) to today's modern but almost extinct game is as important to the history of gaming in the world. At one point Pinball as an industry had gross revenue beyond Hollywood, world wide. Its that important, so coverage of video gaming today historically should include Pinball if for no other reason that Pinball Parlors (arcades) were the just-add-water locations needed for the huge video gaming destination during their debut in the early 80s.
What "The Steve" has done is a legion of zealots and religion behind him. That is much like what you can say about Jesus and Buddha and others, but only in the modern day (which has a little weight, but not much). He is loved and hated, for the right and wrong reasons. He polarizes, which to me is not a unifying thing. Personally I don't see SJ any better or worse than the Bill, or the Balmer, or the XYZ exec that you too can name by first, last or nick. One that comes to mind is Monkey Boy, but why bother.
Yes, Apple I/][/][+ were act ONE. Act II as I recall was the//c (response to Osbourne and others),/// to the business market, GS for the media home market, and of course Mac/Lisa and more Mac crap than you can toss a stick at for Act III. Act IV was of course what we have now, the music distribution company that played the Music Industry like a fiddle. IBM came and went, and now came again with software mostly and big business focus. But IBM is so much more than just that, with research (which Apple tossed in the restructure and resurrection of Apple by the Steve) in the billions. Apple does one thing well now, they make shiny toys for big and little boys. It works, and they are #1 in the world as a result. Woz was the heart and soul of the engineering, SJ was and maybe still is the heart and soul of the massive marketing and design (esthetics) effort. This topic has been discussed for decades, and its now time to wish the design guy good luck. Long live the Woz.
Although these are not companies but religions, I find your comment on the button and worthy of response. Start a new thread on this topic where you bash Jesus and LRon and lets have at it. The reality distortion field to my best guess is not even close to Fictional SCI-Fi made into religion or cross burning and Romans.
and the reasons are multiple...
- I don't own stock in Apple, its over priced anyway for a consumer electronics company.
- Steve Jobs wouldn't give a crap if I was dying, nor would I get press for my health issues.
- The market knows he is not the messiah, and Apple as a mega corp will continue on with the wisdom of many other vested parties.
- Health issues should be private, kept private and not trivialized by news media.
- Respect the privacy of others, too many people in the media don't.
and the list goes on and one. Just make it a non story by wishing him the best and in the afterlife and if he is reborn he is more than a toad or troll for his massive good deeds to the people he has destroyed and belittled.
in a long long time. Waited for it, watched the legal BS about it, and enjoyed the flick when it came out. To Hollywood, if you want my money then produce more flicks like the Watchmen. It was that enjoyable. Popcorn aside, you can't figure out a better way to get my money than putting together great 40+ something old's stories for me to enjoy.
This would be a great way for Apple to introduce the notion I have believed would happen sooner than later. The entire line of Apple products will go to a multicore ARM hardware configuration, and what better way to do it than with a cheap introduction for lower power consumption and footprint than a gaming console for hard core graphics rendering and networking needs. I'm not a fanboy of Apple, at least for the past 4+ years since the introduction of Intel into the product lines. However, this may get me back into the fold if it were to happen.
The government doesn't when it comes to real numbers like unemployment or how many die in war or how they died. Companies lie about earnings all the time and if unlucky get caught and pay a fine. But none of these people including politicians seems to do time for it. My guess is if people just gave out bogus information for things like where they live, or how old they are, then all that info and meta info becomes a problem and the companies will stop using it against people.
Read up on Hubbert's estimates. States they are indeed running out, peaked 4-7 years ago. OPEC production quotas are based on each country's stated reserve estimates, so it is always in the best interests for each country to lie about it (over stating their reserves).
Yep, its art. And so there is likely an endless supply of folks ready to take part in the living art. This is because the science of it doesn't matter, you can't change (at least yet) your DNA and white/red/blue/black cells and what they do. When we have rDNA splicing that is legal and folks actually live from it longer than a few hours then maybe this kind of art will become more important to science. Until then, and I hope that is not in my lifetime, we can only laugh at the notion someone is paying for this research/art.
I'm pretty sure folks will line up to do this, but why would anyone care if one blood strain is tougher than another? I'm not so sure of the upside... Unless there is research money doled out to the participants. Then indeed it is game on.
If we didn't have the 6000 dollar space toilet seats we'd probably have a better funded program. NASA is a money sink, pig, whatever you want to call it. For sure it is not effective of efficient.
on this and other devices in this range of price. When the prices come down to 300-400 for such a large panel and full computer functionality including netbook stuff like external monitor and keyboard hookup, then I'm going to buy one... Until then, its sidelines for me and I suspect many others.
In honor of those lives lost in 86, the billions of dollars spent to try and keep America at the front of a futile space race, and millions starving instead of being fed to do so, the fleet should have been grounded a LONG time ago. I hope America focuses on what is really important, and that is to serve its people, the folks that make things work and tick well in this country. NASA is a pig, a money pit, we all know it. Yes, some tech comes from it, but so great tech comes from other things as well... So, why is it that NASA has such deep pockets and its a private enterprise already? Going 'private' is not going to happen, it is already private with FAT government spending and waste. The bricks are not safe, thus being retired.
For Moz el et the cycle number is about it being perceived as being better, however I seriously doubt they have invented or acquired any technology that is going to make the browser any better than really anything else out there. The browser wars are over, now its about making the device so browser dependent that they can't be separated at the head or hip. Too bad the devices are only able to handle dumbed down versions of the browser at this point. I'll wait another year or two and see what hardware/software offers then, release cycle acceleration numerology means nothing to me.
Sadly Bill Gates is... Bill Gates. I agree, we should be looking at research that is actually sound, A/B blind studies, and real unbiased/sponsored statistics. Bill Gates Foundation is in competition for the media and minds of anyone out there, and they have billions a year to spend on it. Gates Foundation has a Board, and that board has an agenda (whatever it is). Find out where the money flows, to and from DC and to and from the Foundation, then you will find out the Foundation is getting big bucks from donors like Big Pharm and Gov. Just follow the money, its all written down as part of the docs filed and public record. Its a huge scam, selling crap to people that don't need it.
They have to foist impossible numbers yet again via bogus public relation stunts like this legislation? Does anyone remember the past 38+ years since the oil/gas shortages of OPEC when they had less than 30% importation to the US of our daily use, and now we are 56% foreign oil dependent? Americans must suffer ADHD at a low and high level, personal and governmental. The current administration is saying what? That they are going to fund research for alternative fuel systems/consumption models and products? With what? Americans want convenience, and nothing about alternative fuel is convenient to the consumer.
Schmidt, and most of the upper portion of Google management is evil. However, Google is not alone in its desire to own the world of information. Apple, M$, the US Gov, other governments... The real issue is where Schmidt and others like him will land when their time on this planet is over.
Its been a long time cumming...

and in the meantime for the past quarter century I have wanted the porn industry to establish the same kind of warnings. I'm still waiting.
So he must know its true. What is so disturbing to me is the notion that some of those 90% users will pay for future releases, keeping MS in business for many decades to come. Its hard to argue with 1.2 billion potential or current users.
he brought in a very unethical and overtly authoritarian leadership to what could have been a very 'don't do evil' company with great potential and shaped it to be the latest extension of the NSA for the US governmint/CIA. Its sad, but its true.
I'm not sure why or how the world still spends time listening to or having to listen to Dick Cheney, but he seems to have heart attack over and over. Whatever they have him on, put Steve on immediately.

This thread has nothing to do with creationism, or the like. Does have to do with fundamental business sense, and the lack that NASA exhibits.
