I guess you are not Italian. The kind of mafia you talk about is not the one corrupting our government, is the one they are more or less fighting. The "new" mafia is the one which manages to "win" every "auction" for public services and to build public structures, and in some case the outcome is a disaster. Of course to "win" there you need political support, but there is a lot more money to be made.
BTW: I am not using OpenDNS but still I had to no problem accessing TPB today.
Well here in Italy architect and designers are very well paid jobs, especially compared to the other jobs you mentioned. My bad assuming it would be the same everywhere. In this case, you have a point, although is still better to get AutoCAD for $4000 than that stupid app for $1000.
This means those particular demos were not good. The concept of demos is actually a good one and is the way to go for game and other software developers. Is just very hard to get the right trade-off between "free part" and "paid part"
I think you are missing the point. Although Autocad and Photoshop are arguably expensive, they enable you to practice a certain profession (and designer, architect, etc. are not low-paying jobs).
This application on the other hand is just plain useless...and from the screenshots it looks even ugly!
Actually you are wrong, if you break my Lancia Delta from '92 you surely do not have to pay for it as if it were new, leave alone buy me a Ferrari.
He didn't break anything, they could charge him at most for the bandwidth costs and give him jail time (although I guess he shouldn't be judged in the US) for his actions. Claiming he owes $900k for expenses they did after the intrusion (so that nobody else can do it) is absurd.
Why not? I know 3 people with my same first and last name (and my name isn't very common) so I'm pretty sure that by giving my real name I'm not actually giving anything.
The email address is actually more of an identifier than your real name as 2 people cannot have the same email address.
Now, if together with the real name, one can obtain your home address, then I'd be really concerned.
Of course I wouldn't consider a DRM encumbered file to be convenient! I bought a few "eBooks" even from major publishers (like Manning) and they were plain PDF with my email address in the footer of every page. Although I do not have an eBook reader device, I found it convenient to print a few pages instead of whole book and be able to lend the book to one or two friends (whom I trust not to share it further)
So, do you purchase books because of the amounts of paper? I would say that what one purchases is access to the content of the book, so the price of the media shouldn't be too significant to determine the price.
I find most of the books I buy to be greatly underpriced for what they contain, so I really wouldn't complain about having them in a convenient format *and* at cheaper prices.
Why should one give up the pleasure of eating? Is a cheap and easy way to give yourself a really good time (only second to sex). Thinking about "the big picture" is good and all, but we should really live to feel happy, and if you aren't the kind of person that feels happy being a smartass, easy stuff like food, sex and partying will usually do the trick.
BTW: I'm fit, so I'm not trying to justify my overweight status.
A bit offtopic, but let me ask. In the US you really commonly use 300-400W bulbs? I've never seen anything more than 200W and 60-100W are most common in Italy. Either you rooms are very big, or your nights are very dark.
Every ISP I used has the option to turn on or off those filters, this means that the user is supposedly aware of that kind of filtering (and can opt out). Indeed Microsoft may be violating some laws (and GP interpretation of said law doesn't look that flawed if you consider that detail).
Thats wasn't "childish US-bashing", it was just my opinion. In my opinion US handles foreign business the way China handles domestic (if you can consider Tiber domestic) business. I might be wrong, right or anything in between (which is most likely), but surely not an attempt to flame. I just felt to point that out because I am amazed to see how different things are viewed from the outside (I'm Italian, so I'm not living neither US nor China situation) and wanted to share that. If you see any comment about US as flamebait the problem is probably on your end ("lalala can't hear you" anyone?)
Well actually the US continues to make mistakes in my eyes (see Iraq, see how they handle dealing with other countries, or at least Italy which is what I know about). Again, I actually meant "I hope you are not a supporter of US foreign policies". This is just my opinion and is stunning to see how any "un american" post gets modded as flamebait (it might have been offtopic, but I didn't want to flame) on slashdot.
Why do you assume that it is political spam? Unless you are Chinese I doubt you know enough to judge what is happening in there. People have their own opinion, although it may be based upon great misinformation you cannot just assume that to be the case. Also, unfortunately there is no such thing as "The Truth".
Well indeed when I say XCode I talk about the full bundle, XCode + IB + Xray + Shark etc. However I do not find XCode itself to be that bad, especially compared to NetBeans.
Currently I'm playing with Smalltalk (Squeak to be precise), and I must say that after the initial pain I was quite impressed by the ease of working with its tools and the elegance of the language and environment. Plus, whatever you write there is automatically cross-platform, because there is a Squeak VM for all of the main OS. Beware however, that the interface is quite ugly aesthetically and not too easy to understand at first.
...I have to say that not only is Java significantly nicer, but the IDE's are dramatically better than XCode...
I wonder if you actually did both platforms seriously. I work with both on daily basis from some years, yet I find myself cursing every second I spend doing Java (in either NetBeans or Eclipse, I use Eclipse only for the nice j2mepolish integration).
Java syntax is extremely verbose, and the language is really not as objected oriented as they sell it. Also doing a GUI application makes me often think the advantages of being kicked in the balls instead.
In Objective-C I usually find myself writing much less code and have great productivity, XCode never gets in my way and Cocoa/Foundation frameworks usually have a much cleaner API (just take a look at collections, in Java you have to pick between different implementations of the same functionalities)

...blogging punishable by death? What's next? Twitter? Mhhh...and this is a bad thing because?

Funny, your posts were modded as "Funny" and mine as "Flamebait"...The world must be spinning the wrong way around
Because, of course, you used statistically acceptable methods to determine that. Or did you just go with stereotypes?
Yes, I'm Italian and I find your post quite offensive. My english is probably better than most other people Italian anyways. Why should one give up the pleasure of eating? Apparently my and/or wasn't clear enough (right, it wasn't), I actually wanted to point that case out.
I don't know why you are modded -1, apparently US governments mods down UnAmerican comments
</joke>

I hope you aren't an American and/or a supporter of USA military actions otherwise the hypocrisy of your post would be stunning.
You owe me a keyboard. And half a coffee.

Well, didn't know a classier way to make that joke. In my defense, English isn't my native language.
Through probably the joke was pretty rude by itself. Well, who cares.
