Reason #2 is that I am now aware of the whole friggin' industry's greasiness. Microsoft just so happens to be the largest of them, so they get to be the whipping boy.
Speaking of which, does anybody know of a site that catalogs all of Microsoft's crimes over the years? I know Groklaw, in chronicling SCO, brings up MS badness, but it started rather late. I'd like to have facts behind my hatred.
That's the only gotcha I encountered. Other than that, I like it more than XFree86. I use a Voodoo3 as a second graphics card, and XFree86 had some problems with it; X.org handles it perfectly.
There's only so much spectrum. If possible, maybe more of the government-exclusive bands should be freed up for both licensed and unlicensed use.
Boob-gate from the Superbowl and the aftermath is a perfect example of why government should not be in charge of "decency." Eliminate this function. It's a waste of taxpayer money.
OK, so how many of you out there plan on getting Xbox SDKs?...
Exactly. The computer will always be a place for gaming, because anybody can get their hands on development tools easily. There are exponentially more computer games than video games for this reason. Where do you think the creative talents learned how to make games? And what about modding (no, not mod chips)?
So PC gaming cannot die, because then all forms of electronic gaming will die from starvation of talent.
And if that were to happen, and if instead the console changes its MO to allow easier entry into making games, then what you have is a goddamn fucking computer! No matter what you say, many things, such as FPS and text input, will always be easier with a keyboard and mouse. And if you stick a keyboard and mouse on a console, then all you have is a fucking computer! And from here, matters proceed towards the locked-down, DRMed, proprietary hell we fear.
But I digress. Look at Counterstrike. It has, for better or for worse, been the most popular mod ever, done originally not by a company and not for profit. And how many mods are there for Halo, or how many do you think there will be for Halo 2? 0. It's whatever Microsoft puts in and no more.
I've been coaxed by my friends to play Halo a few times. A few observations:
1) Controllers and first person shooters still don't mix.
It doesn't matter how many buttons or analog sticks you can cram onto that specific hunk of plastic. I personally don't have the fine motor skills to aim with that thing. And yes, whoever came up with the idea of having the analog sticks be buttons is clever; but read #1.
2) Whoever decided the default sensitivity must die.I expect to be able to 180 in less than a second.
3) Whither variety?
There are 6.5 useful weapons (the assault rifle only sucks somewhat). There are 4 or 5 decent maps. There are several gameplay types and some basic parameter editing. One model.
Over the years I've seen dozens of examples where all of the Kings Techo-Geeks and all the Kings Men standing around a windows box with bad behaviour finally decide to backup what they can and re-install the damned thing because *nobody* can come up with a plausible explaination for what the heck is happening.
Reason #1 why I hate Windows (and love Linux): In Windows, things fail, and I may never know why. In Linux, things fail, and I know why; it may take a day of reading and tinkering, but at the end of that day, I always know why something failed---and guess what? 99.9% of the time, it's my fault!
In short, I don't want the crutch of being able to blame "the system."
It's made it through (currently) six repetitions of Badgers with excellent synchronization (as opposed to version 6 not even making one). Hell, everything's so crisp and fluid... it's beyond further words.
I think you missed the point of asking that question.
He's answering the question 'Why would you want to clone Windows?' by saying that it's analogous to asking Linus and/or RMS 'Why would you want to "clone" UNIX?'.
In a free-enterprise, private-property system, a corporate executive is an employee of the owners of the business. He has direct responsibility to his employers. That responsibility is to conduct the business in accordance with their desires, which generally will be to make as much money as possible while conforming to the basic rules of the society, both those embodied in law and those embodied in ethical custom.
There's a good Milton Friedman quote I usually break out, about the social responsibility (or rather, the lack thereof) on the part of the corporation. But I can't find it right now.
1) Dress clothes suck. 2) No matter how many times I am taught or teach myself, I cannot remember for the life of me how to tie a damn tie.
However, if you're going to wear a tie, I would recommend Lee Allison. They have several ties that would interest geeks. And, of course, every tie they make AFAIK has on the inside the words "remove before sex"; what's more geek that that?
Have you submitted interesting BSD stories and had them rejected?
The program made imitations of Mondrian's paintings. Not too hard.

Intel sometimes calls it 3GIO (3rd-Generation I/O). No confusion there.
512 MB RAM
2 GB swap
3 MB swap currently used
Reason: because I like the sound of your eyeballs poping out of your skulls.
I tried it. I think my performance regresses.

Isn't 640x400 the maximum for composite video and 640x480 the max for s-video?
Is that usable enough for XP? Is that usable enough for any modern OS? Is that usable enough for most users?
I think you missed the point of asking that question.

I know that there's mathematical ways of going about games.
I don't like to use them, unless I can intuit them.
Sure, mathematics can tell you poker odds. But I think it's much more fun if you try to feel the correct decision.
If it's viewable from street level, it's legal.

an atom is very small. More on this story at ten.
I can just imagine it:
Honey, where's my TV card?
or CRUNCH!
What are we supposed to do? Put it in our wallets? Hmmm... that's kind of funny actually...

The mailing list sure seems to be. The most recent post in the list archive is 18 May 2004.
I don't remember there being any outage. I use the same email server as FL. The closest I came to that was the outage of a third-party NNTP server.
can at least clean up the computer afterwards...
Somehow I don't think you meant what I interpreted this as...
I think there should be difficulty modes in Simcity,
In SC2000, there were. Though the only(?) difference was your starting money (20k, 10k, 10k in bonds).
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for Bluetooth. But I haven't seen anything outside of Logitech's diNovo that uses Bluetooth.
Is IR really not good enough?
