All of Apple's products are invested too heavily into Altivec, something that is not available with Intel's chips. This SIMD was co-developed by IBM, Motorola, and Apple. It's why Macs have such a huge performance advantage over PCs when it comes to things like encoding video. It's even used to assist in OSX's GUI acceleration along side the GPU. Even iTunes uses it.

Besides, Intel's desktop/workstation chips are not RISC, nor do the majority of their chips support 64-bit VM addressing, a feature that is available for the PowerPC, and is supported by Tiger. The only Intel option is an Itanium 2, an expensive pokey processor, that has been trumped by all other 64-bit options, including the G5 of course.

First of all, I'm primarily a Mac user, I currently own a GameCube, N64, Nintendo DS, and have owned a PS1; I bought it the day it was released. So let me begin; :)

Define Poor? Apple has a 92% market share in the digital music arena, how is that poor? Their desktop share, although not on top, is greater than Sonys, even "world wide." Now even with a lower market share Apple rakes in billions and has made profit for years, now how is that poor? I guess when compared to Dell's shares it could be considered poor, but on the other hand when comparing innovation and qualiy to Apple, Dell can easily be construed as poor. So if Apple's share is poor, what does that make Sony who's share is even lower and is getting cremed at their own game? ( You know music playback devices. :) )

Now to ramble on; I don't know where you've been, but Nintendo still has the number one selling portable. Even the DS has "sold more" units then the PSP. Their GC although not on top is still doing well. And what's with this "Mario Paint" comment? Your whole comparison of Apple's lower desktop share with Nintendo and marketing doesn't seem to add up. Are you saying that marketing is not good for computer sells? If so, then look at Dell and than take a look at Intel, two marketing machines that sell very well. Sony also fits this category, as does any business that wants to, well stay in "business." I'm still a bit confused as to what you're trying to convey though with this Nintendo/Marketing/Apple jumbo mix???

And about this design comment, are you saying Sony's doing well because of their design? If so I agree, but unfortunately it is all they merrit now days. Besides their pro-equipment most of their consumer quality is crap. There's only so many times you can wrap shite in candy and still expect return customers, who would rather not deal with the hidden shite that plagues so many Sony's products now days. Fortunately Apple has nice design, but also has a great software package to back it up. Sony's products lack big time in that area.

The Playstation was a joke!!! Are you kidding, it sold like crazy when it was first released. I worked for an unamed game company at that time and practially everyone that worked there bought one. I honestlly don't know anyone that considerd it a joke, nor did not own one from the beginning. But on the other hand, I'm probably the only one that does not own a PS2. I'm personally sick of all monotonous re-hashed 3D games that plague so many systems now days.

I look forward to Nintendo'as next offering. In some ways they're the same Nintendo that we grew up with, but in others they are trying to break the mold that has confined so many other game systems. As an example, I really respect the potential that the DS can offer. But anyways, kudos to Sony for its nice------ "design" on the PSP. :)

I agree. It seems that it was right after Apple released FCP that Adobe seemed to get irratated with them and then pulled out Premier and started to spread negative press. I'm assuming that if AE weren't selling better on the Mac than PC, Adobe would've pulled that also in protest of Motion and Shake. I'm sad to see Macromedia merge into Adobe. This just means I'll be forking out more money to Adobe every year. I generally try to skip a version before upgrading, but with Flash I can't afford to fall behind.

I personally haven't been happy wiith Illustrator. It seemed to perform better with earlier versions even on much slower comps. Adobe's products are gettin more and more bloated with each release and this is why I've personally stuck witih PS7 until now. But since CS2 supports 64-bit memory on the Mac according to Maccentral, I'm upgrading to it and Tiger, so I'm hoping that I'll be able to avoid the usual first releas bugs. (I'm keeping all my digits crossed.)

Well I hope this turns out like a MetaCreation acquisition of Fractal Painter. I had only nightmares of them destroying the app I've used for soooo long and love and they ended up releaseing the best update since its conception with version 6.(Probably one of the most significant, updates since it completely overhauled the brush engine.) Then of course Corel bought it and Painter 7 was a buggy piece of crap. It was the first and only upgrade I've purchased that I did not use. They did redeem themselves with 9 though,(Simply amazing. ), so I hope things continue on this path and that Adobe also will only enhance Macromedia's products for the better.

I must add that AEPro 6.5 is an awesome app from Adobe though, it has never done me wrong. :) I'm guessing that there are completely different departments for each app and this is why Illustrator is alwasy soo buggy IMO compared to Photoshop or AE which work great.

  16. Re:End of Mac? on Adobe Buys Macromedia for $3.4B · · Score: 1

I hope not. But when Apple puts their minds to something, like "Digital Video" Adobe suffers. :) And AE's biggest market is on the Macintosh, so not supporting a major part of their market share would be a very poor, if not disastrous decision on their part.

Besides the game industry, I've never met an artist that used Photoshop on a PC. And there's also the InDesign/Quark battle going on and I've "never" met a print artis that used a PC, especially for critical color work. They would be insane, since all the printers use Macintoshes. From my experience, it seems that it's alwasys the programers, 3D artist and peeps who'm "pirated" a copy that have Adobe products on their PCs.

I hope Adobe doesn't f* up Flash, that would tick me off big time.

I have over a Terabyte of HD and my system handles it just fine. My 7 to 8 minute video jobs export single video files that average about 12Gigs. If I had 16GB of RAM and AEPro supported it, even with that Much RAM I would still need to "purge it all" every so often. I also generally run most of my pro apps at the same time since I need to jump between them. When they support 64-bit memory, my 5 G of RAM will not be enough. I'm upgrading to Tiger since it allows 64-bit memory support for apps now and CS2 will take advantage of that, at least on the Mac. I'll be allocating 4 gigs of RAM into it, since some of the poster illustrations I work on have exceeded over 3.5G in RAM (And since PS could only see 2G, it had to rely on scratch disk(s) to make up the difference.). That would only leave 1G for everything else, so needless to say I'll also be upgrading my RAM when I buy Tiger to more then 8G.

What I work with is peanuts compared to what a friend of mine does. He works with satellite imagery and a small plot of land can easily exceed over a Terabyte for one image.

Anyways, 16G of RAM is nothing with current comps and I bet that in about 4 years you'll probably have at least 6Gs in your system. Go back just a few years and 1G of RAM was considered more then most peeps would ever need or use.

I recall this from the other year, tis why Sony took so long to release a HD player. But Sony also needs to do more then offer basic MP3 playback on their devices.

I can Play MP3's on my 2 year old Clié also, but like the PSP Sony didn't give me anyways to manage my non-A3 music. I can't even change the order or rename my MP3 music once it's on the memory stick. If I do, then the internal audio app tells me it's corrupt until I change it back to the way it was.

Needles to say, I moved to an iPod which doesn't care if I'm using AAC or WAV. It is everything I had expected my $600 Sony to be and much more. I found out the naive way that Sony had only mislead me about MP3 playback and had intentionally crippled my music options. They wanted to control every aspect of my digital audio, even though I owned it on CD. Sony actually expected me to check-in and check-out my songs from the Clié. I and many of my friends encountered this and dumped Sony for audio. They just don't get it. Sonic Stage also didn't help, this software definately does not carry Sony's great design. It can only be described as a steaming pile of shite.

Sony needs to make a device that has the same level of hardware/software integration that is found with an iPod, along with fixing their internal disputes. Until this happens their audio products only merit nice design, but nothing else. They could've owned this market, but instead they made it quite easy for Apple, which does understand our needs to come in and even out-sell the Walkman big time. I doubt Sony will ever get it, so I'm sticking with my iPod and CDs.

I didn't need to wait for someone to make an emulator and then for its bugs to be worked out. And that's a "big ify" until it happens.

And you can get Darkstalker's Chronicle for your PSP and I'm sure a new Street Fighter will be released aslo. These games are always much better when they're designed exclusively for your game system.

Cool when a SNES emulator does happens for the PSP, but until then you do have a "real choice" available from Nintendo for these types of games. Tis why I bought a DS, just imagine how great Zelda DS will be with the additional touch-screen. :)
