ah Jet Set Willy. What a classic, every time I hear the music these days I start twitching uncontrollably. Anyone remember the huge competition that PCW (I think) ran to win everything that was available for the Spectrum, it had something to do with finding hidden places in Ant Attack - that weird isometric rescue game.
Most friendly fire incidents have little to do with technology and more to do with the human factors involved - lack of discipline, poor chain of command, tired and/or inexperienced ground controllers, tired and/or inexperienced pilots, bad map reading and so on.
If I remember correctly, ever since one of the weddings in Afganistan that was tragically bombed, F16 and possibly other pilots have been experimenting with using tablet PCs strapped to their legs with GPS and mapping software to give them a better fix on their real time location.
Maybe it's just me but Fox News is scary. Whenever I get frustrated by the mainstream news channels BBC, CNN, ITN (I'm in the UK) and so on I just switch over to Fox News and realise that the mainstream news channels are, actually, not that bad!
There was a lot more to that case than is usually reported/quoted. Why had he knocked some of the stairs out ? Was he waiting for them ? If he was it was more like an ambush than self defence.
Ever had to use it ? How do you know ? This comment applies to all the other posters who are carrying concealed weapons.
As has been mentioned elsewhere in this thread, one the best ways to not get mugged is to have some situational awareness.
If, god forbid, your guard drops and you are confronted by someone with a gun - what are you going to do ? he (assuming it's male) presumably has it drawn and pointed at you - you reach for your gun, he shoots you. You tell him calmly that you "are carrying a weapon" - he's going to say "hand it over then" - you say "no", he shoots or he's going to say "prove it" - you reach for the gun and he shoots you. Hand over the stuff and he might run away with it - he'll want to save bullets anyway.
My point is carrying a concealed weapon isn't the be all and end all of the situation - it's much more complicated than you make out.
oh come on. What are the chances of this ! You might as well have told him to drive around in a tank. Besides, hiring women to wander around with you is legally questionable.
For pete's sake, don't you know where you are.. this is/.
Guns are in the same category as women here.. we know about their existence but they're allegedly pretty dangerous to handle and likely to cause serious injuries to the inexperienced operator.
Personally, I wonder why you feel it necessary to carry so much around, dump the PDA or the lappy - or use a PDA that you can listen to music on.
Err... Ahh... So I should avoid buying my wife a sythentic diamond if she has access to an electron microscope???
My god man no !!! Don't let her go, a woman with her own (or at least access to an) electron microscope is a slashdotters wet dream ! Think of the time you'll save later on, it'll save you a fortune and embarrasing questions at your local physics lab as well. Umm does she have a sister by any chance?
What happened to it being the thought that counts?
Depends on the female/male you're trying to impress, sometimes the little thing it took you ages to make with your own hands just doesn't cut it.. especially if you are apologising for being late/not liking her shoes/glancing for a microsecond at another woman and so on.
yup, although I seem to remember reading somewhere that they aren't operationally deployed (to a conflict) until they are at least 18 - in reality given the amount of training they get when they join at 16 they aren't going far for a while anyway. Putting my old man's hat on, I wish more would join at 16 and get a bit of discipline, training and learn some respect.
Probably because the raids on Dresden happened over a period of two days not fifty seven ish (for the period generally considered the Blitz, not including other raids at other times or the V1/V2 attacks). The death toll was much higher - the second waves were designed to specifically cause more chaos by bombing the rescue attempts of the first. Some people complain about the Dresden raid because Dresden wasn't a huge military complex and therefore was of no value as a target whereas clearly London had a more significant value. I'm not saying the blitz wasn't terrible, the firebombing of Dresden was pretty horrific as well, but put in the context of WW2 neither were that significant.
Must get damn expensive in cleaning products. I mean you gotta wonder why someone bright spark hasn't thought about making the stuff go down when you flush.
You know I read this over and over and still can't work out if you are serious or not. Personally I think, if you are serious, you've got a pretty strange grasp on reality.
1. The bible is not a fairy tale. It is put together as a collection of independant first hand accounts, not mythology.
Which version are we talking about here ? If it's a collection of first hand accounts why so many different edits ? Shurely they aren't putting a little spin on the stories to match them up to the social ails of the day ? No, didn't think so.

Just post a rumour somewhere that there are vast stockpiles of WMD under the beach huts, problem sorted. Pesky Bahamians (?).
This is slashdot - s/lately/never/
Chicken platter with that ?

Or maybe the UK. Sheesh buy a map will ya!

It's obviously not a very bright dog if it needs the manual, I mean if it doesn't know perl inside out it's just a mutt.
err can we get back to the dog one liners please ?

Because that's about as close as a numerologist is going to get to a woman ?
Thinking about it though, I wonder what /. is like on the other side, maybe it's ./ ?
It was the one being chased by the SCO lawyer.
Burn him ! Burn him now ! Someone's let in one of those "outdoor" stylee people .. don't let him touch you!

I for one would like to welcome our toner cartridge weilding lasermonk overlords ?
