When I switched from Windows to Linux, I found that my Lexmark X5250 combination scanner/inkjet printer wouldn't work any more. So I handed it down to my girlfriend and brought my trusty old HP 4L laser printer back into action.

I inherited it about four years ago, and I haven't had to replace the toner cartridge in all that time. That works out quite cheap per page, I can tell you.

Please don't get the impression that Britons are happy about this either. These teenage girls represent a small but highly vocal minority, and measures are being put into place to cut down on this sort of thing (restrictions on special offers on alcoholic drinks, supposed increases in the power which policemen can wield).

I'm not saying that these measures will necessarily work, but it's evident that the nation isn't just standing idly by and enjoying watching these delicious little tarts parading their flesh on the high street.

Even if we assigned people to ensure that the money was being spent in the right ways, they'd just be susceptible to sweeping a few minor indiscretions under the carpet as well. The whole reason that we are in this position is that from your monthly income tax payment, too much of it is getting scooped up by middle men, or the people who have figured out how to exploit the system.

  24. Re:The real reason people don't switch on Richard Clarke on Microsoft security · · Score: 0

    It's not that simple.

Last weekend, I attempted to switch from Windows to Linux for the second time (the first time was a few years back, when I gave up because Mandrake it wouldn't detect my modem or soundcard).

Though I was impressed with the progress, I've again decided to stick to Windows, for two major reasons:

    1. I have a Lexmark X5250 printer/scanner unit which won't work in Linux.

    2. I have converted all my CDs to MP3s and stored them on a large second hard drive (NTFS). Though I can mount this as read-only under Linux, I can't update it.

There are a number of minor niggles too, but these two are the major ones. I /could/ buy a new printer, yes. I /could/ buy a third hard drive, format it with a Linux-friendly filesystem and copy everything across. I /could/ continue to dual-boot, choosing my OS on the basis of which tasks I am going to want to carry out today.

But none of these options are really what I was looking for right now, especially not the third one, which fails to address the problem entirely.

I am sure that 6 months after Longhorn is released, Microsoft will announce that they will no longer support XP. I expect that at this point I will probably attempt to switch to Linux again, and perhaps I'll get lucky the third time.
