While I look forward to the day a Linux distro can upgrade an NT system, carrying forward system settings, user passwords, domain logons and applications carried across into WINE, this isn't happening anytime soon.
well all this requires is a program that saves settings from NT and restores them into linux, without neccessarily upgrading your NT partition to linux. although this would be more useful to the corporate world as home users probably wouldn't need this i would imagine.
On a related note, SCO filed a lawsuit today against the former pop king Michael Jackson; SCO claims that Michael Jackson used parts of there unix source code when he create many of his popular songs, including "Bad" and "Beat it".
what about "Smooth Criminal" , how could you miss that?
right now, i would say the best office solution is openoffice for general purpose,
but then again just like in windows and MS Office you will always need add-ons for your specific needs, i would say there is no "1 office suite" that can definitely fill your needs (that is if you want to do more than the standard stuff)
For all those of you who are Americans, you should know that the Liberal party is the same as the Republicans
This is Wrong! Former PM Chretien and current PM Martin, both Liberal, were for a bill to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana and i believe Chretien wanted to legalize gay marriage throughout all of canada. These are just some examples, but they are definitely as left wing as, if not more than, the USA Democratic Party.
This is going off-topic but i believe you needed to be corrected on this matter.
there are commercial companies obviously that sell linux, but mainstream usage is not #1 priority for the main developers, therefore it is a hard sell for the linux distribution vendors
sorry i wasn't clear enough, i meant desktop usage specifically here
Windows is an OS driven by the desire for profit and more widespread use. * ease of use * compatibility with hardware/programs * small learning curve
Linux is driven by a desire to create a more 'better' operating system with a desire for more configurability. * longer learning curve * more versatile * not intended for the average user (and will not be anytime in the near future) * more concentration on bug fixes and security, and less on user-friendliness

Since it was first introduced in Hong Kong in 1988, the previous two Robotcops, both American imports, have taught 800,000 school children how to fight crime.
school children fight crime? isn't that the job of the police, or am i missing something here? the article didn't go into enough detail it seems
Sega of America could not use this name as it was already trademarked by another company. They went with "Genesis" instead, meaning "in the beginning", as Sega was leading the way in the beginning of the next-generation consoles.
The fact that someone is doing financially well says nothing about their ethics. FSF's ethics reek.
well, i never said anything about their ethics. personally i don't like their ethics with many issues either (although definately much better than any closed source license), but it isn't directly related to their finances.
well with apache and the new xfree86 4.4 license, it seems things are starting to 'decentralize' from GPL,
ie, other parties are not saying "how do i make this license compatible with the GPL" but rather making their own terms that they think is most suitable, regardless of the GPL (whether or not the terms are good/bad or for personal benefit is another issue)
why richmond i wonder? the area is built-up with an airport and many commercial buildings...but wouldn't the prime area be in vancouver or burnaby where the residential population density is higher?

this is unrelated to the hidden paid add-ons, but when using the free player, you get a list of add-ons you want (add to favourites, desktop shortcut, etc etc), the first 4 are unchecked by default, but if you scroll down there are more, which ARE checked. very sneaky if you ask me. they could have easily increased the size of the viewable list from 4 items
Apple tried to control Linux? Good lord... be thankful they never pulled that off. I can see Apple up there in place of SCO already, and with loads more money and arrogance
where does it say exactly that they tried to 'control' linux? i couldn't find it anywhere in the article
If you want some tips on making some good documentation, look at the freebsd handbook, that is simply excellent. you can usually find what you are looking for in there. i know i can.
whilst in linux what i find is documentation is all around the place, man pages, howto's etc, which are helpful, but sometimes not very convenient
as crazy as this sounds, there will always be a market of people who do not believe anything that is completely free (as in beer) can be high quality. i'm sure they can find many customers who are looking for a lower-cost alternative to MS Office.
Microsoft has argued that unbundling Media Player from Windows would prevent the operating system from working properly.
really? didn't know an operating system needed a media player to work correctly.
unless for some reason other applications integrated wmp, in which case offering wmp as a seperate download is just as good. it annoys me when they make such dubious claims.
they also dropped the price in canada to $199 CDN

Computers for the Ahmish.

don't you mean 'computers for the amish' ?
sorry, i'm being a spelling nazi
you misunderstood the page, uppercased, uppercasing, uppercases are the corresponding verbs for the adjective 'uppercase'
;-)
YOU suck at english

here is the (very general) main differences IMO:
Windows is an OS driven by the desire for profit and more widespread use.
* ease of use
* compatibility with hardware/programs
* small learning curve
Linux is driven by a desire to create a more 'better' operating system with a desire for more configurability.

from that link i posted, the reason why is:
Sega of America could not use this name as it was already trademarked by another company. They went with "Genesis" instead, meaning "in the beginning", as Sega was leading the way in the beginning of the next-generation consoles.
for those of you who don't know, 'genesis' is the north american term whilst 'mega drive' is the UK (and european?) term
here are the specs and some history
Anyone know if these things are good places to pick up chicks? "Hey babe. You say you support open source? Mind if I take a peek at your code?"
let me guess, you're single?

anyone know the status of the FSF finances? it would be interesting to know.
the last i heard they had $750,000 in the account which is not too bad for a company that relies on external funding.
yes it's an older version, rp8, i forgot to mention that. i have not tried the later versions and i probably never will.

And apparently there is a port of the driver to FreeBSD going under way
you can use the 2D radeon drivers for linux under freebsd, i'm doing it right now, not the 3d drivers though (since they also require a kernel module)

A factor of 10 in reduced error rates
not to mention the amount of time it would take a human to go through thousands of emails
