Inverse ARP is used primarily non-broadcast networks Frame Relay to allow things such as multicast to function on what should be effectivly the same Layer 2 segment. It still won't give you a MAC address accross several hops of routers, such as the internet.

  3. Re:which IP address? on Man Uses Remote Logon To Help Find Laptop Thief · · Score: 1

Sorry man but I don't see your logic on this you're wrong MAC addresses don't naturally transport over routers (unless they're Layer 2 tunnelled), they only broadcast within the same VLAN or broadcast domain on a switch. That's a simple Layer 2 fundamental. Is there a specific method you're referring to that I'm unaware of?

I have to disagree with you on this. Impressive graphics are a tool for artists and whether or not they choose to use them depends on the artistic vision they are trying to convey. Some artists like Pablo Picasso are fine with abstract shapes (Wii) while others prefer highly detailed works of art Da Vinci (PS3). It's when the graphics are used as a sole motivating factor to sell a game, with no substance behind it all that it fails. The same goes with a big blockbuster film with awesome SFX with no plot, which can be trumped by a low budget indie film.

It is a bad thing, telnet is still a useful troubleshooting tool to determine if TCP ports can be opened...it can help determine if a problem is at the network layer or the application/presentation layer...because being a network admin users often say "the network is down". Routers still use telnet by default, many commercial unixes still don't have SSH installed by default. Imagine trying to troubleshoot users workstations on the LAN on the fly and you need to boil down what the issue is, do you want to download and install putty or the optional Vista telnet component each time? Try being at a shop with a draconian locked down desktop policy where you CANT install whatever you like, whenever you need it even if you are the IT dept. Telnet isn't useless, removing it by default removes a useful troubleshooting tool which IS a bad thing. Just my two cents.

The audio quality of MP3's can't compare to CD audio quality. Yes they're a competitor to the CD, however for those who buy top quality audio systems listening to a MP3 on them is painful at best. Your mom & dad and a fair percentage of the world's population likely can't tell the difference in sound quality, nor do they own good sound systems. When you play good or crap source media on crap hardware, it all sounds the same. When you play good source media on good hardware it sounds phenominal...crap media on good hardware, it sounds bloody awful. I feel MP3's are best used for DJ's at parties or clubs, and lots of music "on the go" where the sound systems are questional in quality anyway. So when you factor that in, MP3's have cornered a fair sized niche as have CD's.

  12. Telco Infrastructure in Japan is more cost effecti on US Broadband Won't Catch Up With Japan's For 101 Years · · Score: 1

Enhancing the telco infrastructure, I would imagine, is more cost effective than in the US. There you have a few densely populated cities with a lot less geographical distance between them, which keeps your physical archetecture costs lower. The states (Canada even more so) you have densely populated cities with fewer people per square foot than in Japan and those cities are divided by longer distances, making the cost of laying all that cable higher.

You don't see VHS anymore. The cost turns people off and yes, to the average joe they look similar. Don't say "digital distrubtion will kill Bluray" thats crap, we don't have enough bandwidth and most people don't have the hardware to store all the movies they like let alone know how to back them up, would you like all your movies destroyed due to a hard drive crash? Live streaming on demand? Not bad for rentals but again bandwidth constraints for many and a lot of people still enjoy buying or renting a physical product. Just my two cents anyway.
