South Korea got its jump start due to government edicts from General Park (and you silly Americans thought they were a democracy then! Silly Americans! No cookie for you!).

They also were the worst colonizers (have a look at the dutch east indies corporation).

Well, while colonialism is not exactly a nice thing to foist upon a nation, the Dutch colonies were far better off than the British, Spanish and French colonies. The Dutch were largely nice to the Indonesians, even though they were still obviously exploitive. The British, Spanish and French either killed the people they conquered outright or treated them like shit while stealing everything they could. In placed like Indonesia, you still have plenty of Dutch that live there and try to help the people and are quite fond of Indonesian culture, while the British, French and Spanish treated anything different like it was some sort of savagery.

So, in short, while the Dutch were certainly not saints in Indonesia, they were a hell of a lot better than the limeys, spics, and frogs.

Why is it honest to sell out your client? You realize that a lawyer's job is to be a zealous advocate (though within the bounds of the law), don't you? A lawyer is not the judge and jury. It's not the attorney's role. Everyone deserves a fair trial, no matter how guilty. And even if found guilty, there is the question of how much punishment the guilty person deserves. I guess you think a lawyer should just say "Yeah, my client is guilty of crossing against the light. Go ahead and shoot him. What a minute, I'll do it myself." [bang]

Yes, there are many functions that should be privatized, but there are so many things being privatized (roads, General Jim's Army [a.k.a. Try to be on the receiving end of bigotry for once, and you might have some idea of what I am talking about. It's not that one believes that one group is superior and that the others therefore need protection. It is that one sees one group of people not even considering people from another group simply because they are from that other group. You see this a good bit, for example, in academia, particularly in the sciences and in engineering. There are plenty of white professors who only have white people working for them, or Chinese professors who only have other Chinese (not even any other East Asian, but only Chinese) working for them. You see this in the South (Southeast U.S., that is) where so many companies at best grudgingly hire non-WASPs (just enough to keep the EEOC off their backs), but still treat them like shit.
