Are you kidding me? How can you be so naive? They're obviously trying to incorporate DRM into email. Do I have any evidence or basis for this claim? Well no, but then again do I really need any?
My guess is that if they get their way every time someone sends an email a penny will go right into Bill Gate's bank account. This will coincide with a baby seal being clubbed. Jeez, what's next? Corner the tin foil hat market? Then I'll really be up a creek without a paddle.
Face it, everytime microsoft does something, EVERYTIME, it's for purely evil purposes.
Another example I read in Tin-foil Hat Monthly is this time when Bill Gate$ was walking down the street and gave a homeless guy a few bucks. While this seems nice, he probably gave him a new DRM dollar bill and then this guy was later arrested when he tried to buy unlicensed coffee. Me thinks he's currently serving 6 years on the Microsoft Act of 2003.
Alright, well back to playing video games in my mom's house. I'll be back bitching next time microsoft does something.
You're right, Linux doesn't compete with microsoft. It's the software for linux that competes with microsoft. I think the only creative thing about the Linux movement has been the kernel. The other mainstream apps and desktops are clones.
Gnome's trying to be like apple. KDE's trying to be like Windoes XP (Plastik?). Openoffice and star office are clones of Office. Mono says itself it's copying.NET. XMMS...winamp. Gimp...photoshop.
I'm not saying these ideas started out at microsoft (so save the ms...apple...xerox history lesson) but a lot of these large and small apps are nothing more than copies. Some are really obvious like Lindows (Lin----, Linspire?) and some aren't so obvious because they're still in beta form.
I'd prefer if companies would port their applications over to linux, but the people who create this programs for linux aren't contributing much if all they're doing is copying commercial software.
At least microsoft is spending money on research. I'd rather they just spend it on fixing windows, but that's not likely. Other than apt-get, I'm not aware of too many other things the OSS has done that the rest of the industry hasn't done already in terms of a good idea that makes computing easier in a substantial way that affects a lot of people using it. So save your flames and get this list going.
There's nothing wrong with GIMP. It's when people claim it can replace Photoshop is when the flame wars start. I'm not saying you are, so please don't take any offense.
Face it, there's nothing like photoshop. Adobe! Please port!
I followed these directions I found on this page. (I'm not anyone in that discussion) I told the config to make modules for the firewire options. I assumed that this compiled and installed everything properly. If there is anything else I need to do then please tell me.
What the hell does this have to do with MP3??? I wasn't complaining about fc2 removing support for mp3. I wasn't complaining about how nvidia drivers break on the 4k stack that they just had to put in there either. I'm complaining because firewire has been around for a while and for it not to work is stupid in my mind. I mean where in the post did you see the need to start another ogg war?
I've been installing linux for years and I always get some problem that prevents me from using it. I'm running this on a dell inspiron 8200 with a firewire drive connected up to a pcmcia card. All I want to do is play some damn mp3s on this damn thing. Apparently they disabled firewire in the final fc2 because it "doesn't work." What the hell? I think this is a very important feature and if this got out I wonder what else they left out. I don't mean to sound like a troll, but I've been doing this all day and I just want it to work! Two kernel recompiles and doing a bunch of useless crap in the forums didn't help at all.
Well, I'm back in windows where it works out of the box. This isn't meant to be a cry for help for someone to tell me what to do since half the replies would be "well it works for me so linux rocks" and I don't need to hear that now.
Jesus people! this is competition! It's good that these companies compete. If microsoft blows nintendo and sony out of the console market, then start complaining. last time I checked, both of those companies were still kicking Xbox's ass. I know the idea around here seems to be to bitch whenever microsoft does something, but in this case they're still trying to gain market share, not kick everyone out. I think these complaints are premature.
and no, any replies pointing out how microsoft has taken control of other markets in the past (really only windows and office) are not insightful, they're redundant!
The RIAA will be at your doorstep in 9 minutes. Posting on slashdot is now equivilent to an affidavit when it comes to piracy. I believe it's a clause in either the DMCA or the PATRIOT act.
Yeah, but this is about computer stuff so it's on slashdot. If you expect to see "real" news on every article then you haven't been here for a while. I'll do my best to sum it up to you so you don't have to waste your time reading the articles, but just the headlines:
SCO, Microsoft, William Gates Foundation, RIAA, MPAA, Government, big companies not mentioned already, patents: bad
Linux, Linus, Apple (with regards to BSD), BSD, Java (with regards to Sun opening it), Freedom of Speech, Natalie Portman: good
There are probably a few I've missed (and they will be posted below along with complaining how I missed it) but you get the idea.
Maybe I'm a dick, but I think they should spend their money on their own people before spending it on the moon. True space development does lead to useful technologies, but those people are starving to death over there.
Yeah, you could say something similar to the US and NASA, but it's insulting to the chineese people to compare their situation with even the poorest in this country.
Exactly. Every time someone brings up an experience they had of not being able to get some stupid piece of hardware working in linux that they easily could in windows the typical response around here is "well I got it to work so you must be dumb!" I would have switched a while ago however my printer doesn't work and in school I needed to use a specific software title only available for windows and I didn't feel like switching back every time homework was due or I needed to print something.
But I'm not complaining, linux is free and so I have no right to complain as I didn't pay a dime for it. It's just that whenever someone says linux should be on everyone's family living room computer there are a lot of things in the way. People getting offended and the mods posting trolls and people getting +5 insightfuls make this whole free software movement seem really childish. It's sad because I'm sure the people who develop linux, gnome, kde, mozilla, ect. are not here bitching about windows all day long but are actually doing something. I'd do something myself, but I'm still just learning software and I don't have the skills to write a driver for the printer or port PSpice over to linux.
I'm really impressed with KDE3.2 and it's amazing how fast it's updated that is very much beyond Microsoft. There is definatly a window of several years here until longhorn debuts and I think that linux could very well make its way into more people's houses. I just wish something just like apt-get existed for the rpm world that made it just as easy to update. However, I've read of projects in the works just for that so I'm sure "rpm hell" will be over a lot sooner than "dll hell" lasted.
doesn't this required the software to be rewritten to use it? I think it would make much more sense if NX were replaced with something in the os that didn't automatically allow software to be installed by clicking "OK" on some web page. Even though it's annoying to have to type in the root password constantly in Linux, it's a hell of a lot easier than reformatting and reinstalling as I've done for too many people. Even if the computer is operated by one user, this requirement of the root password still makes them more aware that something is about to modify their system. Those activeX dialog boxes in IE make it seem like gator is a new and exciting feature and that's why people install it so much.
Under linux it uses the generic USB mass storage interface and has no problems. Under windows it uses some program included on the cd and it's buggy. When I said they could be connecting with the camera in different ways, this is what I meant. You linux zealots can't have it both ways. When something breaks in windows, it's microsoft's fault. When something breaks in linux, it's a driver problem. This is windows FUD, no doubt about it. Luckily my kodak camera uses the USB interface and I have no trouble when I've used it in windows and linux. Yes, I use linux and windows.
A lot of problems in windows really stem from device drivers. This happens less in linux probably because either the device doesn't work at all (my printer) or the driver is more generic and doesn't include any features that ones the manufacturer puts out for windows. An example is like how in windows my graphics card has this wonderful set of tools specifically for my graphics card. However in linux the drivers are much more striped down and all I can do is changed the resolution and refresh rate. This probably leaves less room for bugs so I don't mind it that much.
um, bad drivers. How can you assume this is a windows bug? Linux could recognize the camera and download the images in a different way that doesn't use the manufacturer's faulty software.
This is a really bad way of comparing two operating systems. People could go on for days, and on slashdot they do, about which hardware works/doesn't work for linux/windows.
My printer doesn't work at all in linux, but I blame canon, not madrakesoft or any other distro.
So once these are issued, a little while later they're cracked and people make fakes relying on the notion that the passport will be checked with less scrutiny because it checks out on the computer. This is like how digital licenses are swiped to validate age when buying alcohol, but they look less at the photo. Technology like this can have the effect of making people less careful when checking someone's identity.
Well duh! Didn't anyone see that movie "Free Willy"? That whale jumped over those rocks and escaped to freedom.
But seriously though, it's good that researchers study animals because they have been perfecting flight and fluid motion for millions of years, where as we have been doing it for a hundred years.
yeah, that we know about. I remember the article on google a few weeks ago that made everyone think just what they hell they're running over there. I wouldn't be surprised if governments kept other supercomputing clusters secret. I don't mean anything tin-foil-hatish here, I'm just thinking that some governments have test facilities that they don't let the public know about.
This has been covered a lot, but it doesn't make you any less correct. When you buy a CD or a DVD you're really buying a license. Or is it the piece of plastic your buying? RIAA and MPAA want to have it both ways. All the legal fun of a license and a contract while still requiring you to purchase more "copies" if you lose the CD or it becomes scratched. Basically, they want to have their cake, eat it, and have you clean the plate you served it to them on. If all music was abstract and you just bought the license then it shouldn't matter to them on which devices you played it on. Or if the music part was ignored and it was just a meaningless piece of plastic with some pits and valleys then you could do whatever you wanted with it including sharing it over a network.
I completely agree with you. If I put a thin piece of dark cloth a foot over someone's head, things will appear darker, but that cloth will retain some of the heat. When this "cloth" is dust in our atmosphere it holds in heat from the light that would otherwise have been bounced back to space from the ocean. This is global warming because the atmosphere is retaining more heat. Just because the surface may be cooler than if hit by more light, doesn't mean the air is.
I completely agree with you. So what about the registration? People should stop complaining about it. I use mozilla and once the page loads it already has the email address and password typed in for me. If people don't want to register, then they can go buy a print copy of the damn paper while I read it for free.
Are you kidding me? How can you be so naive? They're obviously trying to incorporate DRM into email. Do I have any evidence or basis for this claim? Well no, but then again do I really need any?
