It seems to me you're assuming he was looking for someone to do this without receiving money, but he said he gave people a part of the sales for other ports. He's selling a commercial game and doesn't seem to be expecting someone to port it for free. Hell, it'd be easier legally to pay the person.
My advice is to find a forum where these people hang out and post some messages. But he'd have to be careful about appearing to be spam and copying the same message on lots of forums. I understand my advice isn't much, but let's not assume he's looking for some freebie work for a commercial program.
I see it the exact opposite way. Fonts on linux are so much nicer than on Windows. The anti-aliasing on two gentoo boxes, one a dell laptop and the other with a dell lcd looks a lot sharper than on windows. Whenever I reboot into windows xp, the fonts look fuzzy and I end up disabling Cleartype because it's hard to read.
I also just put windows vista beta 1 on the computer with the dell lcd and the fonts still look bad. Maybe it's just preference or maybe it's because I'm used to the fonts in xorg, but it looks a lot sharper to me.
I have found similar results with gentoo. A few use flags and emerge kplayer and it will figure out everything to do from there. Gentoo may have its shortcomings in other areas, but software configuration and integration is very good. Anyone who has pulled their hair out trying to get software to coexist with each other on other distros may want to look into gentoo.
I put this on my xbox one night when I was bored. It worked fine with a USB keyboard and mouse. XFCE4 worked fine. Internet worked out of the box and I was able to use firefox and gaim without any problems. What makes it slow and unusable as a desktop replacement is the limited 64 MB of RAM. There are ways to upgrade it to 128 MB, but that involves surface mount soldering something I'm not an expert on.
Since I'm used to Gentoo, I decided to run an emerge sync and upgrade firefox. It took all night and into the morning which based on the lack of memory was expected.
Other than proof of concept, I'm not sure most people will find a good use for these types of hacks. However, people gain intimate knowledge of the systems they are porting when they undertake these projects, and that is always valuable to the community. All large OS project started from "hello world" so the roots are always important.
You can't compare the two companies this way. Microsoft has that huge profit margin because basically every consumer PC comes with windows. Apple should continue to keep control on the hardware and software. This is how they can create a computer/OS package that works so well for people.
One of their long time strategies is to use software to sell the hardware. Just look how iTunes helped sell iPods. They were not expecting to profit from iTunes, they did it to push iPod sales as a package to compete with other mp3 players.
I'm quite shocked about how angry people get about dupe. It's a dupe for god sakes. At some point the article appeared on Slashdot and now it's there again. People still post comments and view ads and draw traffic to the site so Slashdot benefits.
Instead of getting so angry about some website, calm down and enjoy the summer. If visiting Slashdot gets you so ticked off, take a break.
Instead of wasting your time here on slashdot, try out fedora, suse, or mandrake. they're easy to pick up and will probably work out well. they won't consume your precious time and you might find them easier to deal with than windows.
as for you trying to start a flame war about linux, I don't really care.
"I'm a Windows/MacOSX C/C++ programmer that might be interested by dual-booting into Linux one day, but that will never happen because I don't know which 'distro' to install."
So figure it out! Install a few, see if you like them, and use them. And a casual computer user doesn't choose which OS to use either because they want a dell or they want a mac.
I think that a variety of distros is a good thing. But I think that the variety of package standards is a bad thing.
Since it's a brute force attack and not using some bug that's been known but not patched for months, I'd say so. However, this is about SSH, not Linux so it's irrelevant.
So what? What's the cost of a few dozen extra cameras when you're dealing with a +billion dollar shuttle and a crew of about a half dozen? What NASA needs most is the confidence of their country and if it means adding a few more cameras, it's money well spent.
What scared me about the last explosion was that this mission was crucial for future funding and the problem may have been overlooked because it would look bad to have aborted the mission. As a citizen and tax payer, I'd rather they spend the extra time and money to ensure a tragedy of this magnitude doesn't happen again.
First of all, you have a lot of time on your hands. But then again, I'm commenting on this so that doesn't say much about me.
Second of all, what OS is this for? Windows, OSX, Linux? The driver options may allow you to tweak some things that can make a big difference.
I'd recommend you find a nice very high-res photograph. Nothing looks better than a nature seen with a lot of color. It will look better than some test pattern. You could also tweak it in Photoshop or the gimp to bring out the color and contrast. I'm sure there are many resources that professional photographers submit for public use that google could help you out with.
Thanks so much for pointing this out. When I first saw this comment, I went down each of the judges and checked their affiliation. The two democrats voted for this decision. Three other republicans voted for it and four other republicans voted against it.
The original comment seemed to imply that it's the republicans who are the evil doers in this case, but it's in fact the democrats who think it's okay to give authority to a municipality to bulldoze a home to build a Walmart.
Because young people who are affected by these laws tend not to vote. At least in the US, that is. I heard a lot more rhetoric for Kerry than actual votes for Kerry in the past presidential election.
I'm really really not trying to to start a flame war, an anti-Bush/Kerry flame war, or anything else about the past presidential election.
My point is politicians cater to those voting for them. And if the people voting for them don't care about the restrictions and the companies donating to their campaigns are encouraging these laws, then a politicians is going to pass these laws.
Before anyone says anything about the clock speed not being fast compared to Intel or AMID offerings, 64MB of cache is a heeeelll of a lot of cache. So all those delays from cache misses can be spent doing something meaningful...like processing.
I think I see this issue a little differnetly. Governments need to appear to be ligitimate so other countries will accept them into their club and offer them assistance when they need it. Actions like this may pay many times over in time in aide.
After using many distros, I've found that fonts on linux look a hell of a lot clearer than on windows. Maybe this is a standard troll spouting mindless gibberish about linux, but what distro are you using that can't render fonts better than windows?
And the "snappy" thing your talking about is related to xfree or xorg, not linux. Linux is just a kernel managing the back end stuff on your computer. the x server and the window manager are the things you probably interact with.
And as for package managers, the main distros all have good software like apt, yast, portage, etc. that manages this very well. I find it easier to type "apt-get..." or "emerge..." than hunting down some installer like on windows every time I need a little program.
I think it has all to do with the best tool for the task. I think this is like comparing a screwdriver and a hammer. A screwdriver won't do much for a nail and a hammer will split the wood if you try to bang in a screw.
na, it wouldn't work because it'd cost more than $126,155.29 to get Natalie Portman while wearing a metal bikini to stand next to a penguin while editing her make.conf file to add the -funroll-loops cflag.
well, the problem with your scroll wheel can be solved by adding a line to your xorg.conf file. Searching the gentoo forums should quickly lead you to the answer.
And a stage 1 install won't give you a noticeably faster system. It's generally considered a waste of time. Unless your on x86 and you wanted gcc 3.4.3 and nptl, a stage 3 should be fine.
I recently did a stage 3, then changed some settings so it would install gcc 3.4.3 and nptl and it took a few days to get the system running, but it runs pretty well. Besides, I don't think most people use gentoo because they think compiling from sources will give them a faster system, I think they use it because once you understand the system, it's easier to maintain than going through GUIs and such with other distros.
Do what I do, zip it to a file called windows_longhorn_beta1_src.zip and make a torrent for it. According to the MPAA, you'll have 10,000,000 copies spread over night.
It seems to me you're assuming he was looking for someone to do this without receiving money, but he said he gave people a part of the sales for other ports. He's selling a commercial game and doesn't seem to be expecting someone to port it for free. Hell, it'd be easier legally to pay the person.

It's like exponential whack-a-mole. Fun for the whole family!

I think if he can't do something that drastic yet, start keeping track of all the time wasted on it.

So is air, but people still by air fresheners.
That said in typical Slashdot "I said something about linux but don't mod me troll", I'm sitting in front of three computers running linux.
