And now it is so completely different. I am a vet at this game, and have worked long and hard collecting resources to craft medicine, which I cannot do anymore, I have collected extremely rare skill attachments, which I cannot use anymore, and worked hard to build up a strong Jedi which is now the laughing stock of the game. This is an all new game, and one which is buggy and not fun.
This game is buggy beyond any I have ever seen. The mission terminals in the city I live in no longer give out good missions and are worthless, items in my inventory have bugged in numerous ways making me attempt to reset them every time I log in, and the general gameplay is just BUGGY, getting stuck in combat mode, not getting xp, not being able to complete quests. Crafting is bugged because some schematics require pre-enhancement upgrade items, which cannot be made anymore!
This game had so much promise when I first started playing it 2 years ago. Battlefields and bases were holding promise of an ever expanding war, which never happened. Patches were pushed through to balance issues that were not wanted or asked for, and therefore introducing TONS of bugs in the process.
The game I once loved was destroyed, not with just this latest upgrade patch, but back at the first patch called the CU. Now the game is just unplayable, literally. It is bugged so bad, it cannot be played.
I do not recommend this game to anyone. I am a serious gamer, and have been my whole life. I know when I see a good game, and I do not see one in Star Wars Galaxies anymore. The game is beyond repair, and I mean it, it is bugged bad. The game might be better if it wasn't so buggy. But with 3 *complete* overhauls, the game is destroyed.
This is one of the last final frontiers needing to be policed. Lets face it, the internet is like old Tombstone, lawless and full of crooks. I for one like to do business online, and have fun on it and I hate worrying if my credit card # or other important # will be stolen due to some spyware.
How long have you been working for SOE?
You are talking about this game has been through major revamps when commandos and other professions were balanced? HA HA! You call that a revamp? What is going on now is a new game! Ok, so lets agree on that then. You call bh, commando and creature handlers nerfed and revamped in the post. Mmmm hmmm I call what is going on now a NEW game then, and 3 years into live I might add.
So the different mindset in playing is the problem? What are you even talking about, disassociating weapons from their classes? You call this a big issue? There are so many other problems that are the issue, this is nothing.
Acting invincible is bad? Sounds like you were never an "arcade" player like you just said, and you never really cared about PVP or PVE. You are a droid crafter after all. Why should you care about killing krayt dragons? Why should you care about owning the best weapons and armor and skill attachments in order to get these rare items that these powerful creatures drop? You say there was no tactical awareness before in PVP and PVE vs. powerful creatures? What is wrong with you? You think I was just AFK from the keyboard while fighting krayt dragons and pvping? Go back to your desk at SOE, and write up other "i support CU posts because it balances the game and everyone will like it" posts.
You fail to address the nerfing of crafters, and our support professions. I 'could' learn to adapt to this game, but without our support professions that are all quitting, why bother? They were the people I played for too. My friends that were armorsmiths that I would go and collect hide for, chefs that I would go and collect food for, doctors that I would collect meat and resources for, entertainers that I would go and watch to heal my battle fatigue and get buffed that no longer want to play because they are no longer special and novice enterterainers give the same buff. You fail to address all this, that is the real reason this upgrade is failing. It isn't just about combat dude, it is about everything else that was shoved down our throats.
The most important thing in this game is our posessions, our virtual property. Posessions are so important, that they even get sold on ebay for hundreds of dollars. However, much of our property after the upgrade is no worthless.
Our exceptional weapons have basically been averaged and turned into junk all in the name of balance. Our armor is no different than anyone elses, Armorsmiths cannot even customize their armor like they did, their experimentation was dumbed down (don't ask me why they did that). I had a doctor with resources I have been collecting since day one, I cannot even craft with him, I have a different role now, and all my resources are worthless.
Everything that I own is no longer special. I have spent countless hours becoming the best rifleman on the server I play at (tarquinas). I had special clothing that enabled me to be powerful, more powerful than the next rifleman, and now all this clothing is all worthless. My weapon I spent millions on is worthless, and nothing special. The game where I felt special and loved to play, well I am no longer special, and I no longer love playing either.
I could get used to the new game, I really could, if the people weren't leaving. This game is pushing everyone out. My best friend in the game is quitting, damn you sony! She is an armorsmith, and so upset all her resources are worthless. That was all she did in this game! Why did they have to nerf her?
They didn't ever listen to any constructive posts, they were all deleted! More than anything, I was paying attention to the chef, armorsmith, entertainers, and doctor forums rather than my own rifleman forum. I just was so damn upset what they were doing to the crafters (making resource requirements unimaginable, making them so weak, making their crafting so dumb a monkey could do and taking away their individuality as crafters).
How could Sony just ignore the exit polls and in game forum polls which always topped 75% dissatisfaction in the game? And to top it all out, they released it with so many bugs, with so many issues not addressed.
I hate you SOE for taking the game away that I loved. At least give us back some normal servers, and sell this upgrade that we can buy if we want to play it. I DO NOT WANT TO PLAY SWG2, I want my old game back.
SOE, do you want to balance the combat in this game? That is so easy damn! Just balance what we had, don't rewrite everything! So pistoleers are too weak? Well give them a better weapon or upgrade their moves, but rewrite our HAM system and the whole game just to balance it? It is not needed. Even giving them some weapons with armor piercing would have balanced this game. That is so simple. Give a pistoleer a gun with armor piercing and some high damage and it would be balanced. Not all this patch and nerfs to crafters and everything else, it is not all needed.
RIP Arakon from Tarquinas
I think this could backfire for Microsoft. This is because guess what,:-) , us windows users now have a new toy! UNIX services! Cool, now I don't have to switch to Linux all at once anymore, I can just try it out through Windows! Now, once we start getting the hang of Linux through Windows, it will be a piece of cake to switch when Microsoft stabs us in the back in the next round.
ah but i use linux because it is simple. hard to learn, simple to use. i quite find windows simple to learn, hard to use, and i fancy the elegance of plain text everything that i get with my linux server.
What a gem of a comment. This about sums up my experience with linux as well.
I just won't be happy with windows until I can strip out every single program running and choose what I want to run. I am just sick and tired of all those dang programs running in the background and worried that the next running program may harbor the next major flaw. Usually, they are just annoying flaws such as pop up windows and crashing, but of course they can become more serious such as viruses invading saved files destroying years of hard work or stolen credit card numbers and passwords.
Isn't this rather sloppy writing by this guy in the article? At first I was enjoying hearing his story about lego building, but I couldn't help but to get annoyed by his choice of words. Is this what were teaching kids today? Probably is spelled prolly, because is spelled cuz. It is just a lazy way of saying what you really want to say.
But do those who unveil and launch their consoles first always get the advantage?
I think so. That is the only reason the PS2 has an advantage over the XBOX, is because it was released 1 1/2 years before the XBOX. Basically, the PS2 had many gamers already when the XBOX came out. The XBOX is a far superior console compared to the PS2, although it is battling for the number 2 spot with Nintendo's Gamecube. Timing is everything, and being established in the market. I think it is safe to say XBOX has now established itself, Sony already has along with Nintendo.
Ever do the taste tests and find out they are biased as well? Ever go to a Pepsi booth and they say, taste test our Pepsi vs. Coke!:-) Only to find out the Pepsi is ice cold and the Coca Cola is room temperature. It's Fud I say! Fud!!!
I have played with many mice, I am a huge counter-strike/star wars galaxies fan. Star Wars doesn't need the accuracy as much as counter-strike does. With some low quality mice, if you move too fast, the screen jumps around, if you get little hairs in the optical screen, basically your screwed. And for some reason, I have never had this problem with the Intellimouse. I think it is a great mouse, as matter of fact, I went to the mall a week ago and bought me a brand new one, now I have a spare. It is a cheap mouse too, definetly a must buy for the serious gamer.
Everybody loves free stuff. Once people find out that opensource software is just as good/better than proprietary software, we are doing good. There needs to be a major push starting with educators and librarians on the benefits of opensource software. If there are any teachers/librarians reading this, please make software like this available to your students! What about mass distributing open source software akin to the mass mailings of AOL CD-ROMS?
1. A revel involving unrestraining FUD.
2. Uncontrollable or moderate FUD.
3. A secret rite involving Microsoft executives, involving frenzied FUD producing sessions, and FUD producing activity.
Word Usage- Lets SCO all night long. He is SCO right now, he needs help!
Hehe yea. This price is way high. Want a small server about the size of a PS2 and exactly the size of an XBOX?:-D WELL JUST BUY AN XBOX THEN!! It can be a cheap and sexy LINUX server.
Just buy Mechassault, download mechinstaller and buy a xbox-saves memory device and buy a 180 GB HDD!! Total price, umm just under $325 dollars and it looks cool too! Details on how to mod your xbox are detailed here.
1. If Tivo has commercially-sensitive proprietary kernel modules, they are not obliged to distribute them, and AFAIK, the Tivo filesystem code falls into this category
Wait a second. Didn't Slashdot just have a news article on this very issue? I believe if the proprietary kernal modules (i.e. Tivo filesystem code) were written without linux in mind in the first place, then this would be legal. Do you really believe TIVO had plans to use windows?
I have been checking out the subscription system and trying to figure out what pages are? Pages are 5 bucks but what are pages?? Oh yea, and one more question, how can I make a url link in a comment I tried to do that and I couldn't figure that out either.
The first and probably best steno-encrypted file I ever remember seeing was the first linux no-modchip hack for the XBOX, from http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/docs/007analysis.html
It is a good read.
Lies, Deceipt, and Trickery
The rest of the hack does everything it can to hide itself. There are two major components to the disguise: the "fake" hack, and the JPEG image of Tux.
Firstly the fake hack. The fake hack begins at offset 0xD00 in the game save. If you disassemble the game save, you are likely to notice that some interesting stuff begins there. It appears to be getting it's own address, turning off write protection in memory, patching the kernel, and calling XLaunchNewImage. There is some branching logic which seems to imply that it is patching the kernel in different ways, depending on the value of location 0x8001FFFF in memory. The patches even resemble those that certain modchips perform, some are even at the same offsets. The path to the linux xbe is noticeable as well, at offset 0xFD5.
Upon initial inspection this code seems very plausible. When you look at it closer, there are a lot of inconsistencies. Firstly, the value being tested at 0x8001FFFF does not match up to any known kernels that I know of anyway. Secondly, a lot of the patches to the kernel are junk code and don't make any sense. Thirdly, there is no call to IoCreateSymbolicLink in order for the call to XLaunchNewImage to work. XLaunchNewImage checks to make sure that the path to the executable resides on the 'D:' drive to prevent applications being launched from the hard drive, and therefore only from the DVDROM drive. Without remapping \Device\Harddisk0\Partition1 to 'D:' using IoCreateSymbolicLink, there is no way for the kernel to find the default.xbe as specified.
Secondly there is the Tux JPEG. Starting at offset 0x1080 in the game save is a JPEG image. This is obvious from the text JFIF which is present in all JPEG headers. If you extract out this block, you get a nice little picture of Tux. Seems like a harmless little addition by a linux fanatic. It is typical of linuxheads to stick stuff like this everywhere. In reality, the real hack is encrypted and stored in this image. The practice of storing data in images is known as steganography. Perhaps this doesn't count, as it stores the data in the header and not in the actual image data. It's still rather devious. We'll come back to the contents of the hidden data in a moment.
Since DVD is a digital format, the quality of the picture isn't influenced by the quality of the burner.
Ummm, what?? I think your sorely mistaken! The quality of the picture can be greatly affected. What about movie skipping? Or not playing at all? Crashing?
It is absurd to sit on Mars when we could have perfectly fine space stations. Why be confined by Mars gravity? It is a must to build space stations first, then moon bases, and once a moon base proves self-sufficient, then mars bases.
Unlikely. China's space program is still in it's infancy, and a Lagrange point would be pointless for them. The Russians likely wouldn't fight hard for them, as they know we would almost certainly let them use ours.
If you do not think there will be legal battles in the future over space property, you are truly shortsighted. China's space program will not forever be in its infancy, neither will the Russians space program, or any other future countries space program.
I agree wholeheartedly. It is frightening that in some schools textbooks are not issued, homework is not handed out, and frankly teachers are just not giving a damn. Besides parents, teachers can have an enormous impact on the future of a person by sparking their interest in a science, technology, mathematics or literature.
Teachers, if you are reading this, I can tell you what really made me perform in school.
1.) Discipline: Whenever I had a teacher that was really strict, I mean went around the classroom asking students questions, or teachers that kept the classroom so quiet that you could even hear a cell phone on silent, this always seemed to help me.
2.) Competition: Enough said here. Promote competition in the classroom, ask questions, make students raiser their hands, write on the chalkboard the students names who scored the highest on the exam, give your students some public recognition.
3.) Attention: Care for your students genuinely, if they aren't doing well, make sure you let them know by just being dissappointed. As a student, I knew when a teacher was genuinely dissappointed in me, and this made me do better. Get involved in their interests, and be a secondary father/mother figure in their lives.
I hope this helps out, Best Regards
I think it is great when SCO goes on their suing rampage. Its just a matter of time when all the big companies SCO threatens team up together in a concerted effort to shut SCO's doors down for good.
How do you think setbacks such as no Linux ports for games such as Counter-Strike or Star Wars Galaxies (winex support is broken) affect distribution of Linux on the desktop?
