Funny thing.... We picked up a few servers off dovebid.com when homegrocer.com/webvan.com went out of business. We were stoked when the machines finally arrived. To my amazement, one of the dl380's was not formatted and had a fully functional nt terminal server running on it. After a few attempts at the password, got in with a blank admin password. Turns out the machine was their ADP payroll machine. If anyone has worked with ADP, I am sure you will know how easy it would have been to get into their system. It contains bank account information, payroll information, social security numbers..... I contacted Dovebid to let them know what had happened and they merely brushed me off.

I am tired of fixing my friends computers because the latest worm hit them. The point is you use what is familiar to you. We are working to implement linux as our sole solution here at the office. We have run into minor problems because of our financial system. Other than that, we are almost ready to plung into it. If I had no idea about computers but had some sort of logic, I would go for Linux because it is free and throw openoffice on top of that. It's beautiful. I would like to see Ford put out another release for openoffice assuming they use it.

I received the same notice last week both at work, home and my in-laws. I am so close to their CO that I get killer speeds. We just moved from our house and they said it would take 2 weeks. Being that I was in contract with them for a year term I had to move it. Their "move" is considered a cancellation with the signup of a new annual contract which it did not state that anywhere. Oh well, I am moving in 2 months so that agreement will be void anyhow. I would also prefer not to have the internet if I had to go cable at my house. AT&T used to be our provider before they sold to Comcast. In my dealings with them my wife and I decided we both hate doing business with them and will never do so again.

I will admit they have weak areas. The stuff that pisses me off is the long time you have to wait for install/transfer & the software they ship. This is a little confusing to me. I read yesterday that they (M$) will probably keep you from opening previous version files also keeping you from having cross platform compatability. If this is all true..... Wouldn't one be screwed if they upgrade, remain on the current version or migrate to OpenOffice? For us this could be devastating if we are unable to transfer files amongst our clients. It would suck a fat one if we had to correspond via pdf if Microsoft does go this route. Plans are already forming on our end trying to figure out what the best decision would be for the company. I find it hard to believe they would take it this far.

We usually refer to this in-house as brotha on a budget. With the unemployment where it is at, I decided it would be beneficial if we helped others out in the US before we lined our developers pockets in India. For the time being we now have a portion of our design work outsourced locally.

Sure activation can be a good thing. If I were the developer of software where I actually charged someone for it yet 3.6 million copies are distributed illegally each year I would be a little pissed. However, have a look at Intuit. They implemented product activation on Turbo Tax this past year (should I say attempted). This is by far more of a pain in the ass than Microsoft's activation. At least Microsoft gives you a phone number to call to activate it. With Intuit you have to hop on their website, chat with a technician to get a case # and then have the opportunity to speak with someone. Your case expires in 24 hours too which sucks. They take you through a bogus process to register the software which is a hastle in itself. Did I mention their software is not able to read prior year(s) data. You have to keep your software installed on the machine in order to make changes. Now I have gone off the topic and started to bash another company. My apologies. The point here was there are appropriate ways to implement this. I would suggest they look at Intuit and do the complete opposite!

We have the ability here to block based on many many different sources which include black list, keyword blah blah blah. The list goes on. The fact is we do not. We have considered it but opted not to. It is quite irresponsible for them to handle it in this matter. If I were to block mails, it could prove to be a bad business move. Due to the nature of the business the company is in that I work for, it could be devastating to us. You want to handle spam, deal with the spammers, not the innocent consumers. Did I ever ask for the crap they send me? Hell No! Do I spam out any of our mail servers, No.... never. Who the hell is Bell South (from a previous post) to block my friggin range because someone with a completely different ip spammed them? They are no better than AOL. In my eyes they all suck.
