Known in the industry as piconets there are a number of issues to overcome roegarding the standards however they are not impossible to solve.

The reality will be a combination of P2P and base station architecture where the calls are bridged through other handsets for voice etc to the nearest base station but connect directly for data traffic to ensure the speeds stay high.

This means that there can be fewer base stations to serve the same number of customers. Of course we need to see bandwidth increase and this is only practical in population centres where there are enough compatible handsets to make this viable but it really is going to be the future.

The ideal balance is referred to as the Non Accelerating Inflation Rate of Unemployment (NAIRU).

This is essentially the level of unemployment at which the inflation rate holds steady and is a function of many aspects, one of the most important being job security (or insecurity). This is the magic point at which all wage pressures and spending controls balance out to maintain the stability of inflation (which can still be >0 just not changing).

It's one of the figures that few people can agree on so 2% - 6% have all been banded about, also as it has a sociological basis it also means that it will vary over time and location.

In essence if you are less than this value people will demand more money (as there are other jobs out there) and wages rise, causing inflation to rise in a spiral so 0% unemployment is a good way to cause serious problems in the country.

As an aside there are a number of people looking at how social welfare programs impact this calculation, especially true where the welfare programs are generous, although there are no solid conclusions aside from a very general opinion that good social welfare (a la Scandinavia) is a good thing.

Whilst I can understand when people have this opinion I have to say that I have found nothing more rewarding than becoming a technical manager.

I have a farily technical background hacking around with code until a couple of years ago when I, by chance, moved into management.

Good managers (which I count myself as) in IT need to understand what those they manage are doing. No I don't need the details, but I need to know that if the balloon goes up I can get a full understanding from a couple of briefings.

a good technical manager has the skills to defend his team and play the coporate political games, whilst still grounding himself in the technical side and ensuring that timsescales agreed to are reasonable for the job.

A good technical manager makes everyones life easier, from senior management, who get their expectations met by delivery of timely, quality code, through to the developers and analysts who work reasonable hours to produce that code.

So in short, there is no shame in being a manager, so long as you stay true to, and remember, your roots.

This is very much not the IRA.

It is completely against their MO.

The IRA never seek to kill civilians, just to cause terror and as such have almost without exception issues coded warnings prior to the attacks. Currently PIRA has disarmed and it is only RIRA (Real IRA) that are active however it is unlikely that they would have the capabilities to produce such a massive and well coordinated attack.
