Microsoft are already feeling the pain from Linux and OS/X. It seems that they're getting more radical not less in response, what with all the DRM and crappy performance and other limitations vista has over XP, now this.
It make me wonder just how anti-user Microsoft can afford to get before people just say 'no more'. I don't even know who their target market for vista will be. I mean, home users won't want vista because of all the DRM and the fact that min. spec is too high for the average 3 or 4 year old home dell box. As for businesses, vista has a new-look gui and some extra bloatware, but doesn't really bring anything tangible to the table that would cause companies to want to upgrade all their workstations to vista min. spec. and switch over either.
I guess its just down to the fact that you'll get vista installed by default whether you want it or not when you buy a dell or something.
Its windows. Its always going to be insecure. Install linux on those PCs instead, but first make sure any windows-only apps you need to run work OK under wine. Also you'll giving the kids a b3etter education by not forcing them to have a Microsoft-only world view.
How is it that a program that is meant to just read and display text and images can actually cause virusses and other binaries provided as data to be executed with admin privileges?
>> AOL: Well, if I could offer you 10,000 free AOL shares would you consider not demerging?
Shouldn't that be:
AOL: Well, if I could offer you 10,000 free AOL hours would you consider not demerging?
If the US started doing that, it wouldn't take long before the rest of the world stopped using ICANN's top-level domain, and effectively put the whole US on a subnet of some even higher level non-US domain.
>>... bought the cheapest Mac available,...It cost me AU$949. Since plugging it in, I have barely used my $3000 Windows desktop...
Since downloading Linux which cost me precisely $0, I haven't booted windows in years. It also means my existing PC hardware isn't going to waste either.
AMD's quad soultion is two dual-core cpus, qhile Intel's is 4 cores in a single package.
TFA seems to suggest that somehow AMD' hypertransport system gives it an edge over Intel's solution, however any external bus (i.e. hypertransport) is going to be slower than package-internal interconnects.

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.
Someone who breaks the DRM to copy their own legally purchased CD or DVD to their own MP3 player for their own use still falls foul of the RIAA/MPAA. Until that gets fixed, you shouldn't allow these coprorate agendas to be promoted under the guise of honesty good citzenship.
You of all people are in a very important position where you are molding the future generations, and the kids you teach are very impressionable at that age.
Please don't presume to teach and reward our kids that its right to be passively compliant consumers no matter what big bully corporations say and do, even if they do find contentious labels like 'pirate' to justify it.
Err.. how about: 1) Allowing people to upgrade their PC hardware more than once before they have to re-buy Vista. 2) Take all the crappy DRM out of vista so we can play our own damn media 3) Get rid of the stupid Eula clause that says vista can only be used on a single screen. 4) Get rid of the stupid Eula clause that says vista can't be used in virtual machines 5) Not purposely outdate XP by making DirectX 10 vista-only
There's no such thing as altruism for Microsoft. Its all about making as much money as they can at any cost to the user. They always have and still continue to abuse the monopoly they have created.
Acutally politicians should also learn logic and systems theory from us, as they don't currently seem to think or plan in very logical or structured ways. The first thing that needs refactoring and clearer requirements definition is the law.

So what happens in the case where someone finds a significant problem with the milk/meat itself from that breed that can't be fixed quickly by further genetic manipulation? By killing off other breeds we've just lost our backup plan.
The gaming industry are going through the same as the film -> TV industry.
Movies.. Large and expensive one-off production.. One-off payment to view. TV... cheap to make... lots of small programs.. commercials.. recurring payment to view.
Games are moving this way too.. monthly subscription models, advertising, etc.
The problem is, TV costs like $40 a month for about 90 channels with more adverts than content, end even then its all just re-runs of re-runs, the only new shows are all cheap reality shows and designed to appeal to people with no IQ.
I can see games going this way too. The big epic games are a thing of the past... New games will just be a re-hash of some earlier game, nothing new, and filled with click-through advertising. And you pay monthly to play it.
One problem with cloning is that if all animals of a particular species become exactly the same, we loose mllions of years worth of genetic variation caused by natural mutation and selection.
Also we lose the associated benefits of variation such as different animals haveing different levels of immunity to different diseases. Having all your eggs in one basket is a REALLY bad idea.
Its about the ongoing erosion of personal identity and freedom, of which privacy is just one cornerstone.
The US Government and (even worse) large US corporations are being allowed to using the 'might is right' approach combined with a large amount of paranoid fear-mongering to arbitrarily remove rights that have until recently had been considered a basic requirement for any civilised country, and as such were included in the constitution.
Cause and effect may be confused here. The study asserts that obesity affects your IQ, however I'd guess that IQ is more fixed than weight. This study could really be confirming that less intelligent people are more likely to become fatties in the first place.

Err yeah. I'm sure the power company will be fine with paying millions to dispose of the highly radioactive shell properly, instead of, say, polluting the oceans by going for a little trip somewhere quiet and sinking it when no-one is looking.
I'm just going through a divorce and have an 18th month old son. Although originally from England, I now live in the US. Unlike Europe where they're used to the idea of 50/50, at least here in Arizona if you're male the system is against you.
According to my attorney, You have no chance of getting 50/50 actual time with your kids if they're younger than about 5 no matter how good a father you've been.
The other big difference between Europe and US that is also a factor in divorces, is that most US companies treat developers like they own your life. Companies here in the US seem to think its fair to expect/demand developers to work ongoing 60 hours+ weeks but not pay for that time, just by saying you're salaried. If you only want to do the hours a week that your terms of employment state then the majority of comapnies here think you're a bad employee. That really screws up your family life too.
Why do you think MS have bought themselves a big chunk of interest in Xen? basically so they can dictate what power Xen will and won't give to the user.
Really interesting thing...

Ballmer let slip at the end, (regarding European vista launch date):
"...we'll have to push the button because our partners--hardware makers and retail chains--need time to ramp up supply chains, marketing, and demand generation."
Demand generation. Vista itself has no demand (meaning no extra benefit over XP), so they have to artificially create demand now.
Jeez whats up with you morons worrying about our GDP.
Why is the fact that our planet would also be totally wasted only a minor side issue to you?

Microsoft have made Virtual PC available for free for a while now... The reason is that its basically not worth anything because its so crappy.
I can't believe they're trying to use free Virtual PC as some major bargaining chip to the EEC.
