  10. Re:TV Licenses in the UK on Losing Control of Your TV · · Score: 2, Interesting

Well that's simply an issue of enforcement. Historically this wasn't a problem as there was only the BBC. Now there are three free to air comercial channels as well as the Beeb. The same technology is used for all 5 channels, so how do we stop people who don't want to pay for BBC from watching the BBC.

Oh I know, we could put some sort of tag in the broadcast which would limit what people could watch on their TV... Oh wait.

  11. Re:TV Licenses in the UK on Losing Control of Your TV · · Score: 1

Sounds terrible doesn't it! Until you realize that the revenue from the Licence is used to fund the BBC. Now arguably the Beeb aren't what they used to be, but their average quality of content is still way above commerical television

My biggest fear is that because of the political climate here the fee will begin to be distributed to comercial chanels. Then I will resent my licence fee. Having to watch comercials and see my fee fund yet more crap reality programs would no make me happy

Growing up in Canada I found the television series most accessable as a lead in. It was a regular on PBS, and I'm sure it still must be.

One I was hooked I read the books which I loved, followed by the radio play. Thing is I think they're all good for different reasons.

The only worry I have, is having lived in England now for four years I still find bits I didn't get the first time around. So how is that going to translate to the typical Disney audience?

  13. Hot Hot Hot on The Absolute Worst Working Environment? · · Score: 1
Well, I was working in an office above a grocery store when the Air Conditioning let go. We were told it would take two weeks to get parts because the company was too cheap to fly them in, they had to come by sea.

This was July and my office went up to about 40C. Oh and it was the kind of company where the servers were in my office, and just as an aside they were running an old version of SCO UNIX on the servers.

To keep us happy they put a huge exaust fan in a window outside in the main office. Which did absoulutley nothing to cool my office, but did make a tremendous noise.

As you can imagine it didn't take long for the servers to start crashing so to add to my pleasure I had managers coming in to yell at to me because the machines had crashed.

Six months later they installed the new A/C they had bought because of machine problems. They decided that it would be best used in the Marketing office.

But it was all OK because I could look out my office window and be happy I was living in Bermuda.

  14. Re:Two Words on Clean Nuclear Launches? · · Score: 2, Insightful

In any case surely if there was an accident the chances of it breaking close to the centre point are quite low. If you look at the probabilities there are surely three high risk areas. The ground station where it's prone to attack or earthbound natural disasters, the lowest portion of the atmosphere up to about 20'000 feet where it's prone to environmental effects, and geostationary orbit where it's prone to space junk. Either of the first two disasters end with the majority of the elevator flying off into space, the final one would be bad news, but risks could be minimised by a good cleanup before construction, and a geostationary object, say controled barrier flying ahead of the elevator. In any case most designs for these elevators have the elevator thickest and strongest at the geostationary point. The biggest risk in the event of a break would be to passengers in transit below the break point. Engineering constraints dictate that the structure would be too light to cause much damage at any single point of impact.
